Endless warts on grandchildren.

Flowersintheattic57 · 13/09/2022 21:25

To not feel relaxed about how many warts my grandchildren have? I see them most weeks and have noticed that one child has them all over her chin, and the other has a cluster by her elbow and on her knee. They seem to be spreading at a rate of knots! My daughter is more chilled than I and says they’ll go away on there own, but I don’t feel convinced. Has anyone else dealt with a plague of warts?
On a a more selfish note how likely am I now to get them?

Are they molloscum contagiosum rather than warts? That spreads rapidly and appears in clusters.

Didiplanthis · 13/09/2022 21:26

Sounds more like molluscum than warts..

LHReturns · 13/09/2022 21:26

Surely this is molluscum? It takes ages but it will go away and they won’t get it again.

abovedecknotbelow · 13/09/2022 21:27

Molloscum and not much you can do about it

Flowersintheattic57 · 13/09/2022 21:32

They may well be, I’ve looked it up as daughter says she’s not having them checked as ‘kids get stuff’, which I agree with generally. But how bad will it get? And are they likely to pass it on to all and sundry? Are we supposed to be doing anything about it?
I’m not usually anxious about kids stuff but if they had nits you wouldn’t send them in to spread it round.
Also other grandparents are quite frail and immuno suppressed.

Have a read of this thread to give you some idea of how incredibly intractable and frustrating they are. GPs don’t treat them, so your daughter is not wrong that there’s no point.

My DD has it now and my DS had it for a long time but I’ve never caught it.

toolatetoloseweight · 13/09/2022 21:41

my nephew has a lot of warts on his hands and a few on legs etc. he is 3. he also has quite bad eczema and sees a dermatologist twice a year. when my sister asked about the warts, derm said to just leave them - they are unlikely to spread to others and the chemicals used to treat aren't recommended at such a young age.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 13/09/2022 21:49

Very few adults will catch them as they will already have come into contact with the virus. DD2 had them and they were gone within 5 months. DD1 is covered and had them for 2.5 years it's awful. She has eczema so apparently body won't fight them off quickly. Docs have referred her to dermatologist as they are so bad but they wont even see her. They have recommended Chrystacide Cream which you can buy over the counter which seems to be helping.

Hiphophippityskip1 · 13/09/2022 21:56

My child developed clusters of warts after having covid and dr said that the covid virus is known to trigger these sorts of viruses and that they have seen more and more cases in young children. Hers started to fall off after 6-9 months.

Feelinglow27 · 13/09/2022 21:56

If its warts try thuja. My friend who is a pharmacist recommended it when my daughters verrucas wouldn't budge and it worked within 2 weeks. Also works for warts.

If its molluscum, my daughter also had this for ages and I tried all sorts to get rid. I found a post on here that recommended Epsom salt baths. Do every night and also rub the damp salt on the bumps. Also worked!

LongLostTeacher · 13/09/2022 21:57

My DS had warts on his hands when he was 4 and I was quite worried he would be picked on when he started school. I remember someone on here saying their child’s warts disappeared when they got chicken pox. My DS had already had chicken pox by then so I was a bit disappointed this wouldn’t work, as all the remedies I was trying weren’t working and the gp wasn’t interested. Anyway, DS got poorly with something viral and DD got chicken pox at the same time and then DS’s warts disappeared. I think he probably had a dose of chicken pox without the rash when DD got it.

This is a long roundabout way of saying the hopefully your grandchildren’s warts will disappear, and if you have already had CP then maybe they won’t be a problem for you.

Stevienickknocks · 13/09/2022 21:59

My kids had MC. They spread in damp conditions like swimming pool changing rooms etc. We did no sharing towels and really frequent washing of them. clean PJ every night (on legs and buttocks). No sharing baths. Covered spots with small plasters when they looked like they may burst as they spread when the fluid inside comes into contact with skin. Took ages to go.

Flowersintheattic57 · 13/09/2022 22:17

Thanks for all the replies and the link. I Will get them some thuja as it seems the most innocuous.
One child has eczema which we have managed to reduce greatly with Tamanu oil mixed with 25% organic sunflower oil , but this has really set her back. We haven’t needed to use the steroid cream for six months now.
I feel bad for them. They’ve had a really busy active summer with lots of camping so they could have picked it up anywhere.

Try Molludab. It’s expensive (£24 for a small bottle on Amazon) but cleared up Molluscum in a week.

We went to the doctors and they advised us that we’d have to wait up to two years (!!!!!) for them to clear up on their own and they couldn’t offer anything on prescription.

Thanks I will. I think we should at least try to treat them especially as the younger one has them all over her chin.

That will ultimately be up to your daughter, though? Unless you’re extremely involved in their care, I don’t understand the use of ‘we’.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 13/09/2022 23:05

Probably as others have suggested molloscum which you won’t catch

My thoughts too. They're not your kids OP! Unless your DD has asked you to take over the care of the spotty ones

Marvellousmadness · 14/09/2022 04:35

Why is your dd not doing anything about it. Poor kids

There's no real treatment for them though.

Details of the condition & options for treatment are given here www.nhs.uk/conditions/molluscum-contagiosum/

You're very unlikely to be infected, there's no need to stop any normal activities, and they don't pose a risk to other grandparents.

As some are on your GD's chin it's worth suggesting your DD takes her to the GP.

Posted this on the other thread linked and will post it here too. Not trying to cause an argument, but homeopathic products don't work even if you think youve seen an improvement. It's coincidence. My mother treated everything I ever had as a child, including serious burns, with homeopathy rather than taking me to a doctor or hospital. I've since been told she was guilty of neglect because of this. Don't let that be you.

gogohmm · 14/09/2022 05:53

Warts can take ages to clear. We used the duct tape method eventually when the drs prescribed creams failed. On the face it's trickier but they do eventually sort themselves out

I might have missed it, but I don’t think anyone has recommended any homeopathy on this thread?

Flowersintheattic57 · 14/09/2022 07:28

Thank you all for the information, I’ve read it all and ordered the molloscum stuff online.
For those incensed at the ‘we’ , I was a lone parent as is my daughter and I help facilitate the raising of the next generation with family support and when needed, money. These are the two things I would have found helpful. The ‘we’ indicates family, not the unhinged grandmother.
I was genuinely shocked last night when I saw the extent of the spread of the ‘warts’ and I am very grateful to all the information offered. People are so generous on the whole, it makes my day.
