When are rich people ever satisfied with what they have?

dottypotter · 13/09/2022 14:17

One of the Dragons (Dragons Den) was asked to open something at a school and they wanted 7 thousand pounds to do it. The school obvs declined.
Why does having money just make you greedier and greedier?
Are people ever satisfied?
AIBU to think they could have done it to help the school out or done it for alot less than that?
Schools don't have much money!!

Where did you see that about Tony Blair?

That's appalling.

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/09/2022 18:10

This particular example is in pretty bad taste but to answer your question:

The kind of people who are good at making money prioritise making money. It sounds obvious but it takes a certain sort of personality to be good at this. It can be unpleasant when it involves trying to get paid by a school, but that's basically what an entrepreneur does. The whole point of running a business (whether that is a public business or just you and your speaking engagements) is to maximise profits for that business.

HumptyDumpty2022 · 13/09/2022 18:12

IME the super rich are not very nice people
at all. You rarely get to a substantial wealth being nice.

Why don’t you ask King Charles? He’s nice (now) according to the media and posters on here.

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 18:17

Never not until they are on the very top and even that doesn’t satisfy them unless they are so far ahead from the rest which is pretty much impossible. Wealth a psychological I can imagine a lot of multi millionaires believe they aren’t wealthy enough as they may live in an area that has a billionaire down the road who has a bigger house, more cars, bigger yacht etc. Also to these people money=success. The more richer you are means the better businessman you are. Thid is simply untrue. So much is based on luck. Billionaires/millionaires will never say that though as they feel like it will lessen their “achievemts”

This post has nothing to do with Charles. Please take a break.

would you work for free? just because they are rich doesnt mean their time doesnt matter

I don't think anyone said free. But 7k is a lot don't for a days work (in the real world or a couple of hours!)

EuripidesEumenides · 13/09/2022 18:28

Can't see any coverage of this anywhere so it's difficult to judge meaningfully without any context. e.g. is it a state school? Did the request even reach the dragon in question or did an assistant just send a stock response to an appearance request without thinking or checking?

Abcdefgh1234 · 13/09/2022 18:30

The answer is no because lifestyle is change. When i start working i dreamt about having 40k. I thought i’ll be happy and fulfilled. Then i reached 40k and dreamt about 70k. Then i reached 70k still i dreamt more. Lifestyle changing overtime. So i guess rich people never feel enough. Because their lifestyle change and want more and more.

notanothertakeaway · 13/09/2022 18:33

If it was a request from the Dragon's former school, it might have been nice to do it for free / low cost. Otherwise, why should they, if it's not a cause that's relevant to them?

Testina · 13/09/2022 18:37

Well how do you think is reasonable?
If I said £3500 instead of £7000, would you say that was OK?
Because that’s closer to what they’ll get after tax.
They can set their rate, and that’s fine.
If they do think cheap/free for charity - wonderful.
If it’s their own ex school and teachers there went above for them - morally they should.
But just a random school taking a punt?
They can and should set the rate they want.

Andromachehadabadday · 13/09/2022 16:25

Are you the poster that regurgitated the story about the Beckhams paying your friends mortgage off if they would sell their wedding date, so the beckhams could have the venue?

Because this sounds similar. Random story to say awful Rich people are, that no one can find any real source for

That was true.

hewouldwouldnthe · 13/09/2022 18:45

Had a look on Google and can’t see anything about this so it’s probably bollocks
Grow up what makes you think it's on google!!

@dottypotter

So where is this news?

itsnotmeitsdefinitelyyou · 13/09/2022 18:54

As a PP said, I'd imagine it wasn't a cause they support, so by asking for a large sum, it ensures they either don't have to do it or they'll be well remunerated - time is money after all! ;)

RedHelenB · 13/09/2022 18:40

That was true.

That Urban myth has been going round for years!

No it wasn’t.

What a very strange person you are - I was looking on Google to try and find anything that might verify what you said.

still suspect it’s bollocks

Lots of ppl work for free. I've volunteered as I'm sure others have as well for charities and good causes.

Day20 · 13/09/2022 21:18

@girlfriend44 yes I know. My point was, there's a difference (big) between free and 7k for making an appearance.

Even when celebs do an appearance for free they can make a return so I absolutely agree.

I know what your saying to some degree. But at what point are you not going to realise perhaps you need to really need to dig deep and gain some depth!?

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 13/09/2022 14:23

Many aren't no. It's why you see rich people complaining about a few quid extra, and some even use food banks.

They are the ones who are rich because they are good at complaining and sponging off of other people. See the threads on well off friends who rarely open their wallet/purse to pay..

dont you need a voucher from gp/health visitor/ type thing…charity to use a few weeks d bank? Or anyone can use them no matter income???

And those lifestyles start costing a lot more so they have to keep earning far more to pay for it. (Schools, houses, first class travel, second and third wives, cars, toys, philanthropy). Keeping up with the Jones’s never ends.

Hesleepswiththefishes · 13/09/2022 21:22

Ughhhh food bank!

THisbackwithavengeance · 13/09/2022 21:26

The other day I watched a man come staggering out of M&S with a massive armful of reduced price sandwiches and cold cuts and climb into a car worth around £250k.

And I bought a second hand item off FB Marketplace for £5 (£20 new) from a lady who had a private gym and swimming pool built onto the side of her house.

Rich people are tight IME. That's why they're rich.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/09/2022 21:29

If he doesn’t have a connection to the school, it’s just a job and he’ll have a fee the same as he does for after dinner speeches.

I don’t think this has anything to do with greed. He has to allocate his time like anyone else. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t do charity or mentoring work, he may well do.
