To think this is scummy?

Resellers, more so the ones you see on TikTok.

There is a woman who regularly attends carboot sales, picks up plushies and teddies for 10p-£1 and then resells them on ebay for extortionate prices. She found one for £1 and she’s reselling it for £300!! Because it’s “rare”.

Something about attending these carboot sales and with the intent of reselling feels awfully scummy to me, as far as i know the profited money doesn’t go to charity either, she just keeps it to herself.

Her comments are flooded with cheering on and positivity, “what a fab steal” or “so jealous well done!” and it doesn’t sit right with me at all. I know once she buys it it’s hers, but i sometimes feel for the owners who unknowingly are being somewhat “scammed” out of the money that could of potentially been theres, she never tells them their worth! Alot of the time sellers at car boot sales are short of cash themselves.

To be honest, I wouldn't use a radley purse even if you offered me £1 to take it off your hands!

A bit mean, and not really relevant.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 13/09/2022 13:48

You are being so unreasonable.

It's not 'scummy' at all. It's enterprising.

BoviTraci · 13/09/2022 13:50

I knew a woman that claimed benefits and went to jumble sales and sold stuff on , all the time attacking people for not working. A deflection. Didn't twig for many years what her game was .

Twawmyarse · 13/09/2022 13:50

Skinnermarink · 13/09/2022 13:45

Well that’s why I was selling it, because I didn’t like it 🤣 but they are definitely worth more than £1 to lots of people.

At least you got a quid 😂

Wasn't a mean comment obki just pointing out that people like different things!

Twawmyarse · 13/09/2022 13:50

One persons tat is another's treasure I meant to say 😂

Seller is happy.

shes making a profit so shes happy.

Its perfectly fine.

Seller wouldn't be so happy if they knew they had just sold a £300 rare Teddy for 10p

Baaaaaa · 13/09/2022 14:06

Seller wouldn't be so happy if they knew they had just sold a £300 rare Teddy for 10p

Then they should have been bothered to do their own research.

NovaDeltas · 13/09/2022 14:37

I sell antiques that I have purchased for the purpose of reselling. I go to places where people don't know their value - car boots, charity shops, auctions etc - and spot the gems others don't. If I'm charging £300 that's because I've been able to identify a genuinely rare and sought-after item. It isn't hard. Anyone could do it with practise.

If someone gives her 300 quid for it, good for her. If it's just a battered old bit of shite then no one will.

AllBlocChain · 13/09/2022 14:42

You wait until you hear about antique shops!

Blickart · 13/09/2022 15:34

Not scummy at all, it's savvy. I can't be arsed to even get out of bed in time for car boots bargains let alone faffing with ebay afterwards so I am genuinely impressed by people like this!

My best friends dad once did this to us many years ago, he bought my Teddy for about 10p from our car boot sale, knoeing that it was actually a collectors item (he dealt in antiques) and he sold it on for a couple hundred. It's definitely bad if you know the people closely that you're buying from. Still bothers me to this day

Now this is scummy

maximist · 13/09/2022 15:43

I sell secondhand books and can quickly look at a dozen boxes of books and pick out the one or two that are worth something. This knowledge has taken 20 years to acquire, it's not just a case of turning up and randomly picking out a few books and hoping for the best. Anyone could look up their own books online to get an idea of their value, if they choose not to, that's their problem.

Twawmyarse · 13/09/2022 13:50

One persons tat is another's treasure I meant to say 😂

You're right! Sorry :)

JauntyJinty · 13/09/2022 15:49

The only thing I find odd about it is that there are still people selling stuff without spending a minute checking google to find out what it's worth first!

threepointonefourone · 13/09/2022 15:54

I always think in this situation you are paying the reseller for a service.

i love certain lines by particular manufacturer of vintage crockery that was fashionable about 50— 70 years ago. Pieces regularly turn up for pennies at charity shops and car boots. I hate going shopping in general and absolutely detest trawling through mountains of second hand tat.

so I can either devote eg 4 hours of a weekend doing a thing I hate in order or find something I like or I can effectively pay someone with the knowledge, and who DOES like trawling through tat, to find things I might like.

Seems like a fair Trade to me

Theraffarian · 13/09/2022 16:16

We’ve done the odd clear out at a car boot sale before , and always do a quick eBay search of the sold prices for the things I think might be worth a bit . That way I can sell at a reasonable price , however I’m quite happy to sell a bit cheaper than I think the maximum price is knowing that the item will probably get sold on by someone who has the time and will to sell on eBay etc and deal with everything that goes with that .

In fact the last one we did I had quite a long conversation about a pile of specialist magazines and what the resale value was if listed individually. I didn’t have the time or patience to do it , but my seller was willing , so he got a decent price on them , and given time should make a fair profit . Which was fine by me .

It really is down to the seller to check the market value of what they are selling .

NoMoreChubRub · 13/09/2022 16:35

Someone i know makes a living out of this. Can earn up to 1k a week. Doesn't work. Literally buys and sells.
One was a volvo die cast truck. 25p bootsale. Sold for £375. Plus a £30 fuel delivery fee for 10 miles away.
Loads do it.
I couldn't be arsed but fair plays people want to spend time doing it and people want to spend that thats their choice

tttigress · 13/09/2022 17:03

Are there really that many opportunities to buy something for 10p and sell for £300 anymore?

Thanks to the internet, most people know what their stuff is worth.

I goes you can up sell some stuff or occasionally get lucky, but obviously this takes time, hence why the person needs to be financially compensated to make it worth their while.

Antarcticant · 13/09/2022 17:05

No problem as long as they are declaring the income they make on this and paying tax (if it takes them over their threshold). If you buy items with the intention of reselling them, then you will incur a tax liability.

Butterfly1066 · 13/09/2022 17:06

@xiaoxo

But why would it go to charity

How is it scummy ?

Georgeskitchen · 13/09/2022 17:12

Those carbooters could have done the research and sold them on ebay themselves. They chose not to
Get a grip !!!

RaininSummer · 13/09/2022 19:17

If she is clever enough to spot things which are worth more and bothers to list them etc why not? There's nothing to stop the car boot people from doing that but they, presumably, want to get rid quick. Don't antique dealers do something similar?

Would you have felt better if a child bought it and ruined it?
Of course, he was BU to tell you about it, if you're going to do that to friends at least keep quiet!

Mrsjayy · 13/09/2022 19:21

I mean she's buying and selling isn't she there is nothing wrong with that. I mean people flounce about "flea markets" buying crap and that isn't frowned upon. I wish I knew what I was looking for I'd be doing it too.

Ladyof2022 · 13/09/2022 20:01

Very. Single. Thing. we buy has been bought and then sold on at a profit.
