AIBU to think that if nursery closes for the state funeral I shouldn't have to pay for it?

So government have declared a bank holiday but said it's not a requirement for staff to be allowed the day off. My work have decided no day off for us. Yes it's shite but whatever.
I don't begrudge the nursery workers a day off but I've just had a notification saying that they'll be open half a day but we'll be charged the full day. So this means I'm going to have to take the day as authorised absence unpaid as it won't be allowed me swanning in at half 1 when I finish at 4 and I have no annual leave left. I'd be ok-ish with paying for the half a day that they're actually open but to spring this on a weeks notice is a bit crap.
I'm not sure whether I'm being annoying or unreasonable I just think why should I pay 53 quid when I'm losing out on a full day's work.

YABU. It’s shit but them’s the breaks when it comes to nursery 🤷‍♀️ At least she isn’t going to die again.

OldEvilOwl · 12/09/2022 19:09

It's probably in the small print. Shit, but not much you can do about it

Yohohaha · 12/09/2022 19:11

I agree. I'm meant to be on 2 night shifts Sunday and Monday night for the NHS and I have no alternative childcare so I'll have to take then both off and owe back the hours. And pay nursery for the privilege. I'm sure lots of my colleagues are going to be in the same position, the ambulances and hospitals are probably going to be short of staff.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/09/2022 19:13

I'm more annoyed that they will open half the day. Either open and crack on, or say its a Bank Holiday and close. I'll bet they don't want to have to pay all their staff for a day off.

Speedweed · 12/09/2022 19:14

Nursery here closing and we're being charged the full day. I don't know if they're paying staff for the day (and whether they do so for normal bank holidays), but if not I don't think we should be charged. Unexpected closing is in the small print but it covers things like the boiler breaking down or a flood, so I think it's cheeky trying to get the Queen's funeral in under it.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/09/2022 19:16

Say no.

You’re paying for a service.

No service, no money.

girlmom21 · 12/09/2022 19:20

Which half are they opening? Half a day seems strange based on the funeral timings.

SparrowsNest · 12/09/2022 19:23

If they are opening for half a day they are not counting it as a bank holiday so I really don't see how they can charge you for it.

LGY1 · 12/09/2022 19:24

My sons after school club have just emailed to say that as the school is closed, they will be closed.
They will add a credit to our account.
perfectly reasonable!

mummyh2016 · 12/09/2022 19:27

If you normally pay for bank holidays then unfortunately YABU. It's rubbish though.

SuperlativeOxymoron · 12/09/2022 19:28

Odd that they're doing a half day. Either do or don't I'd think?

DS nursery is closed and they've removed a days pay from our October invoice to refund it.

Bookworm777 · 12/09/2022 19:30

The funeral starts at 11 though – what's their justification for shutting for presumably the afternoon???

It's getting ridiculous now. All the supermarkets are now shutting too, like on Xmas Day.

Thehop · 12/09/2022 19:37

I’m a childminder, it i close I don’t charge. It’s not fair.

i had years in nurseries. They charge parents full for bank hol but make staff use a holiday day. It’s shit.

Katlow · 12/09/2022 19:40

They're opening 1pm to 6pm. But I usually drop off at 8 and pick up at 4. If I have to take a day off and pay for the privilege that kid is going to be rattling the gates at 1pm and I'll be there at 6 on the dot to pick him up.

I agree it's so cheeky

Sunshineandroses5 · 12/09/2022 19:41

Our nursery make us pay for all bank holidays. If you would normally pay for a bank holiday you will have to suck it up, it’s in our contract too and annoys the hell out of me.

If you don’t normally pay for bank holidays i would try not to pay if possible

I know, just a weeks notice…I think that the queen should really have planned her death a little better

that being said, the nursery should be open really, they’re surely an essential service? And they 💯 should not be charging you for being closed

Hugasauras · 12/09/2022 19:54

Very annoying. Our nursery doesn't do bank holidays, it's only shut for two weeks over Christmas, which is good as my work doesn't do bank holidays and DH's only does some! I imagine quite a few people will still have to work on Monday.

That’s awful. I don’t begrudge the staff a paid day off but I am shocked that they would make them take it from their holiday.

Super inconsiderate of her.

Hahaha I mean nursery should be understanding of the fact that closing for the day with a weeks notice makes a lot of parents lives unnecessarily difficult so shouldn't have made the decision to close.

I actually feel quite bad as I get on with the manager and she's really lovely and I know she's just going to have a load of nasty emails tomorrow but the nursery are run by a bigger company who have lots of nurseries, so surely this should be something they're funding rather than the parents. The nursery staff are fab and deserve a day off but not on the parents dime!

Closing supermarkets for 1 day and your moaning.

Senmum2013 · 12/09/2022 20:02

Sorry op, that is really cheeky of them.
Also nhs worker here. Had to swap off the Monday day onto a Sunday night as no school for my youngest and cannot afford to pay an all day sitter (work 12.5 hour shifts plus travel time). I was lucky that my department could accommodate the shift swap. @Yohohaha could you still work the Sunday night that way only owe one shift back? For clarity (incase anyone wonders) our Rotas are (painstakingly) written months in advance therefore none of us could have foreseen this.

Creameggs223 · 12/09/2022 20:02

And let's not forget the nursery staff who have no childcare because schools are closed shall I leave my dd7 sitting home alone while I go to work in a nursery?

Gruffling · 12/09/2022 20:03

Yanbu. Nurseries and schools closing at such short notice is going to cause a huge of amount of admin for essential services and businesses that stay open as they scramble to cover for working parents who now need a day off to cover childcare.
