It depends on their policy. Our childminder has always had in contract bank holidays are paid for. I'm expecting her to charge for it.

Thankfully don't have childcare on a monday anyway so makes no difference to me.

my kids are adults now but it would have depended on whether they were available and willing to work or whether they cancelled on me.

I won't bring it up and assume I am paying her. If she gives me the money back, then great. Realistically, she hasn't even mentioned she is taking the day off but I imagine so!

I am getting the day off work so there is no real loss, plus I've already budgeted for the cost.

I am aware that I am fortunate enough to be able to make that decision, I know there are others where the money could make a real difference.

Well I’ve already paid for it as I pay in advance. In contract we don’t pay for bank holidays (or school hols when she’s not open) but this one was such short notice I’m not sure how it will work. I feel like I can’t really expect a refund/ reduction next month as she’d be out of pocket?

I’ll see what she says tomorrow. I’m thinking we might just have to swallow the cost. We’re away 3 days this month that we will have to pay for (this is our choice I know) so I’ve paid for 8 days and getting 4, which is a pain in the arse but there we are.

I’m also self employed/ freelance on an hourly rate but luckily DH will be off so I will still be able to get a bit done on that day,

Our nursery doesn’t charge for bank holidays and invoices in arrears, so we won’t. Must be hard for them though, they budget for the 8 normal bank holidays but this one hasn’t been budgeted for so they’ll lose a day’s income and still have to pay staff

Yes I assume we will have to pay our nanny.

When we had nannies bank holidays either - they worked (so paid), they took holiday (paid) or asked for it unpaid. Their choice.
childminders are SE so set their own t@c but usually SE people (like me) don’t get paid holidays.
nurseries will have contractual terns and conditions, but are subject to consumer law and if they are not offering a service cannot ask to be paid.

Yes. I'll be paid as normal and think they deserve to be paid too.

My childminder never charges me for any days i don't use her, so no holidays/bank holidays etc. I would if she asked though as she is an absolute star.

Very much doubt the nursery I work in will be paying me for the day

I know they won’t but I’m hoping nurseries decide to stay open! I work somewhere that won’t close for a bank holiday and have no childcare, I can’t book a day off at such short notice either. No one can so there will be a few of us in the same position.

As a childminder I don’t usually work or charge for bank holidays. I’ve already invoiced for this month and offered to work Monday but none of the families need me. So I’ll have to credit them a day in October. Could have done without losing a days pay but can’t be helped.

When I had a nanny I paid her for everything because I didn’t want to loose her.

Those days are behind me now, but with my childminder I would have taken the approach that I had budgeted to pay her, so at short notice I wouldn’t leave her short - because it wouldn’t leave me short either. I’d expect a “return” in a generally good relationship - perhaps one day she’d have mind for an extra 15 mins she didn’t usually work when I had a late meeting. However, if I still needed the childcare and the childminder said they weren’t working, I’d expect not to pay.

I don’t know, and I’m a bit nervous because I’m still paid for time worked at my job atm (temp to perm, have to submit timesheets) but pay childminder in advance, though she doesn’t work bank holidays. I’ll be paying for a day when I won’t get paid and not sure how I’ll afford it.
