Totally realistic. In fact, there are plenty of women who go and dip in the sea everyday without swimming (just bobbing up and down in the water, splashing in the waves) so if you look for a local group you could start now - they are all incredibly supportive.

Totally realistic if you join an outdoor swimming club. Please don't go on your own. Join a club they will guide you through.

When I started outdoor swimming I haven't been back in a pool since!

Also research adult lessons at your local leisure centre to get your technique going over this winter ready for glorious summer days!

i live by the sea and swim all year round.
it’s completely realistic! Get some lessons, but if you want to start winter swimming now is a great time to get in and acclimatise.
even if you’re just dipping for 5/10mins the sense of well-being is enormous.

our local beach is full of older women in the water, alone, with friends, in grps. Just go for it.
use an app like Magic Seaweed to show you water temp, high/low tide, wave and surf size…

I would start with pool lessons but then I'm very cautious about sea swimming even though I grew up at the se and I'm a strong swimmer

Totally realistic.

I learnt to swim as an adult and now swim a lot both in the sea and pools. I found practice helped and doing swimming drills with a friend who is a good swimmer. So I would have weekly lessons then swim with them 1-2 times a week at least.

It's definitely doeable. I was a weak swimmer (could just about do a couple of lengths) for years, but then I had lessons and learnt to swim well within four months. I wanted to complete a one-mile charity swim and I was able to!

I did the mile in a pool, rather than the outdoor option as I didn't feel ready to do a full mile outdoors - but I can definitely swim outdoors now! Go for it, it's great exercise!

I'm a swimming instructor.....if you're keen to learn and enjoy being in the water then your confidence will come quickly. Enjoy!!

See if you have a local Bluetits Chill Swimmers group. I'm a member of our local one and it's fab. You meet socially for a dip in the sea, lake, river or whatever body of water your local group swim in. No pressure to swim, you can bob about if you want. It's amazing for body confidence and everyone is welcome, free of charge.
