To think there really should have been a sign on the motorway?

Have been trapped on the m6 travelling south for two and a half hours and showing no signs of alleviating. DS (21 months) getting very upset.

Why on earth don’t they put some sort of warning up? From what I’ve seen on twitter it’s a junction closure so plenty of chances.

Honestly cannot recommend using Waze enough over google maps for things like this. It’s updated live by other users so even sudden road closures you know about quickly. I also find that google maps tends to tell you that it’s heavy traffic but just let you sit in it, while Waze will proactively find a way around it wherever possible. It’s got me round to horrible bits of traffic E recently.

So sorry you got stuck in it, sounds awful.

I can't find a way to read updates on Waze. It tells me there are X amount of reports but I can't see how to read them.
Could you point out what I'm doing wrong, or not doing please.

AliceinSlumberland · 11/09/2022 18:50

The symbol or the colour of the road is tbe update really on Waze and then it just reroutes me. There are certain symbols to show road closures etc. I just take the apps word for it that I don’t want to go that way 😂

We were planning on going from j32 up to lancaster for a day out - and then return of course. We checked Google maps as usual - didn't show anything wrong on the M6, and the times on the a6 seemed normal - but the road colours showed there was some sort of problem on it. The Traffic England website showed the closure.

WTF, Google maps?Hmm
(Anyway... we went elsewhere avoiding the motorway and A6 instead).

TimeForTeaAndG · 11/09/2022 18:55

So is this just Saturday Sunday closures? We're travelling down from Scotland to Manchester on Friday this week and reeeaally would rather not do a whole diversion via the A1 if possible.

passport123 · 11/09/2022 18:59

Use Waze. It would have directed you off the motorway .

SpoonyMcFace · 11/09/2022 19:02

Of course accidents will happen but a crash, even a nasty one, would have been cleared by now.
That's not a thing! An accident can take much much longer than two and a half hours to clear.

JubileeTissues · 11/09/2022 19:06

There is a digital board just before Carnforth and it was displaying the closure today.

If you get on at Carnforth (j35) though the next sign is after the slip road so that's no use.

I'm driving from Scotland to Warrington on a Saturday later this month. Is there a suitable diversion? I've looked at a map and it seems like I'll need to get off well before Lancaster and travel miles to the east before trying to rejoin the M6.

There really is no good alternative route, thanks to the bowland fells and then the Pennines.

Tessasanderson · 11/09/2022 19:08

Travelled from Edinburgh earlier. I would say we were warned about the J33 junction closure every 10 miles at least. Maybe you should look up as it was ALL over the digital signs and has been all weekend

I think so. Check on traffic England, that should have the definitive planned closures.

JubileeTissues · 11/09/2022 19:09

"There really is no good alternative route, thanks to the bowland fells and then the Pennines."

Off at j34 and across the Trough of Bowland.

Thanks 👍
When I log on it says X amount of users are online in my area and X amount of reports.
I can't find either and I'm a nosey bugger 😁

Not a good idea if a lot of people try it. It's the sort of road that often has more sheep than cars on it.

JubileeTissues · 11/09/2022 19:17

@ErrolTheDragon most people don't even know about it and the sheep move. Was fine over today, more traffic than usual and it's a good alternative route if the PP can only make the journey that day and wants to avoid the A6.

Mumski45 · 11/09/2022 19:34

I have been aware of this closure for a few weeks as we are local. DS(16) works in Lancaster on Sat and Sun but we live in Preston.

Tried to use Google maps to find alternative routes but was shocked to see that there was no acknowledgement of the closure and it kept trying to tell me to use the motorway- even when going from Garstang to Preston as the A6 was choked.

He usually gets the bus home but as this would have taken hours as the bus can't divert DH has collected him both days and I have been on the phone to them for about 45 mins to divert them down which ever local roads were clear. It's been a nightmare and we have 3 more weekends of this.

JubileeTissues · 11/09/2022 19:39

Sounds like Google maps is the problem for many because all the boards are in use south of Penrith

We were stuck for five. I think the difference is a bad accident is just one of those things, this was planned and known about. Hopefully this thread has made others aware so they aren’t stuck. We aren’t local, we were just returning from holiday.

I hope you got home ok op. I just wanted to say thank you for posting your original message. I live in the lakes and my parents had just set off to drive back south on the ,M6 when I saw your message. No signs anywhere up here and it was really difficult to find any info on any traffic websites. Luckily they turned around before they got to the motorway so they are here for another night. Thanks again x

lilaccottagegarden · 11/09/2022 20:19

I’m so glad it helped somebody!
