Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

My dad told me that when the previous King died there were actually three days off: one day of mourning after the event; the funeral; the coronation of Elizabeth II.

As for those pearl clutching that this'll be "another day of lost learning" and "how will they make up" you're coming across that this closure will somehow be the fault of teachers. I'm sure that's not the case, but schools close on Bank Holidays. Always have, always will.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 13:03

We don't have all this hand wringing over 13 weeks holiday a year. Which I know is how it is , and teachers pay is pro rata etc etc . I'm not knocking teachers.
Maybe the ' six weeks' should be carved up a bit more to help working parents ?
A bit of a sea change ? It could do with it!
Children spend a lot of time out of school.
We don't get as many back holidays as they do abroad as well.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:05

@toooldtodate but they couldn't do that as then you would get people saying they don't want their kids watching etc
Thats the problem when you have a population of 67 million , you will never please everyone
But we have protocol for such events which is followed

madnessitellyou · 10/09/2022 13:05

Complaining about the notice Hmm Grin.

How much notice does one normally get for a funeral?!

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:06

@EssentialGarage thats just box ticking its always been likely , we have protocol in place for such events
It is what it is and in a population of 67 million you won't please everyone , but thats life

1dayatatime · 10/09/2022 13:07

Look all schools were closed in the UK from March to September 2020 and then from January to March 2031 - all for a virus with an average mortality age of 82 and that had a minuscule risk to children.

So to be honest I really can't set them missing one day of education for the Queen's funeral as making much difference.

Oh no, did they not consult you? Shucks.

Grasp the situation will you. The Queen has DIED.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:08

@noblegiraffe thats my sentiment as well , we should not see school as a safe haven and then thats it
These children need intervention long before starting school many of them
Schools can only do so much and they are meant to be a place of education
My school teacher friends now have to almost be social workers and the like
The issue we should be looking in at is more provisions for these children not rely on school

SpringIntoChaos · 10/09/2022 13:10

YAB(very!)U!!!

Just because you don't want to watch a historical moment in our country's history, it doesn't mean that I shouldn't be able to. And I do want to...very much!

I'm deeply saddened by the (yes, I know, inevitable) death of our beloved queen and wish to watch the funeral service. As a teacher of very young children, that wouldn't be possible if I was in school. Maybe if I taught older children we could watch online as a class, but I doubt my 6 year olds would fully grasp the significance.

I completely understand that you don't want schools to close...but maybe try to understand the deeper significance of your 'want' for others.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 13:10

Grasp the situation will you. The Queen has DIED.

It's just not THAT IMPORTANT to some of us.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:11

@EssentialGarage you do know when it is , its been announced
Yes there are issues but many businesses will be aware this is likely , we all coped when they got shut down at a drop of a hat
And if your really worried about the economy , this will probably bring in more tourism and money so it won't cost in the long term
Or you could just look at it that our queen who served for 70 years has died therefore many wish to pay respect so a choice has been made for the majority

AlwaysGinPlease · 10/09/2022 13:12

@OneFrenchEgg that's irrelevant to whether or not there's a Bank Holiday .

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:12

@OneFrenchEgg it may not be but you live in a country that has a monarch
How do you think other countries would react if a serving president etc

mumsneedwine · 10/09/2022 13:13

@1dayatatime I'm sure my 42 year old friend is v comforted by your analysis of the lack of need for schools to close during covid. Unfortunately she's dead from covid, caught in a classroom. It would have been her birthday tomorrow.
Schools closed as hospitals were full and lives were being lost. I teach students with long covid and it has been life changing for them. You are v lucky if you came through the pandemic knowing no one who was affected.
Makes me so angry when these comments are made as people died. I know of 4 teachers whose children are growing up having lost a parent to covid.
Bet hey, I'm all right so sod the rest of you.

whynotwhatknot · 10/09/2022 11:57

i really hop medical appt still go ahead that wont be fair to alot of people to just down tools

I suspect the issue will be childcare though - if schools are closed then a lot of doctors / nurses / AHPs won’t be able to work.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 13:14

It's just the capitals were funny. I'm sure the pp understood the Queen has died. But it's not a big deal to a lot of us whereas, yes fine have a bank holiday, we can't stop you, but don't expect everyone inconvenienced to be thrilled.

Walkden · 10/09/2022 13:14

"It's just not THAT IMPORTANT to some of us"

the government has decided it's important enough to the nation to make it a bank holiday and important enough for kids to miss a day of school.

freckles20 · 10/09/2022 13:14

mids2019 · 10/09/2022 12:51

Good in theory but is everyone getting an extra paid holiday. Will there be enhanced payment for this that have to work? The NHS will obviously continue to function but bank holidays do cause debate about full service provision.

There is the assumption everyone will be wanting to watch the funeral which may not be the case.

As a self employed person I won't be getting paid.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:14

@mids2019 it will get treated as every other bank holiday by employers I would guess
It won't come as a surprise to most
People who don't want to watch my volunteer to take shifts of those that do etc
Not everywhere will close , normally bank hOlidays many many things are open
I don't know if this one is different and makes places etc

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 13:15

Yes, which leaves 'some of us'. I'm sure you understand that the government isn't the voice of the entire nation?

itsalwayscycling · 10/09/2022 13:16

It’s a local holiday here anyway (assuming it’s the 19th which looks most likely) so schools are already closed that day. My son is raging!😂Sports all cancelled this weekend and he doesn’t even get an extra day of school!

AlwaysGinPlease · 10/09/2022 13:16

@OneFrenchEgg I couldn't give a hoot what anyone thinks about being inconvenienced, thrilled or otherwise. It is ONE day.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:16

@OneFrenchEgg but the serving government are the voice, when they get voted in
Do you not get that

UndertheCedartree · 10/09/2022 13:17

QuebecBagnet · 10/09/2022 11:13

I disagree. Everyone should have the opportunity to watch the funeral inc teachers

But to be fair 'everyone' won't get to watch it as plenty of us work on bank holidays.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 13:18

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 13:16

@OneFrenchEgg but the serving government are the voice, when they get voted in
Do you not get that

I think you are the one lacking comprehension.
Let me break it down:

The government make decisions and implement them
Some people don't like those decisions but are powerless beyond voicing objection
Is that clearer?
