Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

It's Monday the 19th. I don't agree with it myself. I think people should choose to take part or not.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 12:26

Maybe the Sunday may have been better?
It must be an inconvenience for so many people

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:26

@freckles20 but when you are self employed thats the risk you take . My dh is self employed and like you say you don't have to actually take the day off
We live in a country with a monarch its always been pretty well known we would likely get a bank holiday when the queen dies
Im surprised its so much of a shock go people

VladmirsPoutine · 10/09/2022 12:26

@freckles20 For me it's definitely a day off work. A long weekend. A nice lie in and pottering about doing some design work.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 10/09/2022 11:54

So what happens will they have to make the day off up somewhere else? As now they're missing yet another day of school... they've already missed enough of school over the past few years!

Do you have to do extra work when you've had a bank holiday away from the workplace?

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 12:28

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:24

@OneFrenchEgg but hospitals don't close on bank holidays

Outpatient appointments? If you're right and camhs is still running that's fantastic.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:29

@OneFrenchEgg I'm not sure about outpatients ? But if they do close hopefully they move appts round to fit you in the same week at least

flumposie · 10/09/2022 12:30

I'm a teacher and I want to watch the Queen's funeral, she was my Queen for 51 years. Totally selfish of you to not consider the adults who work in schools . Do you complain when schools are closed for other bank holidays ?

blameitonthecaffeine · 10/09/2022 12:30

We can't close our school completely. 2 year groups are leaving for a residential that day (don't know what happens if travel companies or the hostel aren't running - parents have paid a lot of money and they're 3 day and 4 days trips).

My sister's a teacher too and her school can't close because they are a boarding school and it's not an exeat weekend. They might close to day children I guess, I don't know.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:31

All these people moaning about the one day off school would probably happily take their kid out for a day for holiday or whatever
Its one day , they can do homework or extra work at home if your worried
But yes it might inconvenience a few but the country isn't run considering just a few , its considering the many and those that want to watch the funeral , a historic event

toooldtodate · 10/09/2022 11:22

Having your kids home isn't likely going to make it easier to watch though is it? - i can understand the sentiment behind it but the schools could have put screens up in the hall to watch it and spent the day learning about the queen etc and her legacy - there are more fitting ways to spend the day than closing

I'm a teacher and I'd like to watch this sad but historical day with my own children ...not everyone else's !

darmaka · 10/09/2022 12:32

They do, all clinics will be cancelled on bank holidays. That includes chemotherapy clinics, pre and post surgical etc. Their lives are insignificant I guess.

eglantine7 · 10/09/2022 12:33

I think schools should close. It's a huge deal for this country and many will want to watch it all.

basilmint · 10/09/2022 12:33

So annoying when middle-class MNers talk about deprived children needing to be in school when really they are annoyed about their own personal inconvenience. If you really care about deprived children in school, lobby your MP for better provision for those pupils the rest of the year.

ilovesooty · 10/09/2022 12:33

mum2bee2022 · 10/09/2022 12:17

Is this another day of lost teaching for pupils? How will they make up the teaching time?

Not another one.

gs26 · 10/09/2022 12:35

@darmaka does that include elective c sections?

TwinkleChristmas · 10/09/2022 12:35

It’s lovely. Il get the day off and the kids will be home for a day. I actually like my kids so spending the day with them isn’t a problem.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 10/09/2022 12:35

Scottish schools mostly off anyway

Right back at ya, totally selfish to not consider all the businesses that are struggling at the moment that now have to pay holiday, lose a day's income and then somehow fit all that days work in somewhere.
Selfish not to consider the 0 hours contract workers who statistically are the most vulnerable
Selfish not to consider those in essential services who would also like to watch the funeral, and now also have to sort childcare
Selfish not to consider those with hospital appointments or weddings but you go banding around the word Selfish.

Speechless, this will benefit a few and inconvenience many.

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:39

@EssentialGarage how will it only benefit a few ?
It won't at all , its been well known we would have a bank holiday , even my 18 year old knew it was likely

worriedatthistime · 10/09/2022 12:41

@EssentialGarage those you mention are not the whole population and you know when you do certain careers bank holidays are one of those things you may not get
If your self employed again you know the risks

generalh · 10/09/2022 12:41

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:30

I know Inset days are not holidays , but once our school had a ' well being ' day off years ago
They called it an inset day ..

This has happened with us. Staff did their INSET Training after school over a couple of days to mirror the time an INSET would have taken place. We had to make up the time; it wasn't just oh have a day off. We worked extra hours on some days to have it as a well being day.

You will probably struggle to find anywheee open that day

Things like playgrounds, woods and beaches are usually open 24/7...
