I have a DS age 5, DD age 1.

Both could hear a bomb go off and won't wake up.

I never really thought much about this until visiting family, who say to other people around the house 'Shhh! Such and such is asleep'. It confuses me at first because mine just don't wake up at all. I'd never think to not make noise around them. I actually still co sleep with DS (DD sleeps alone), and I watch films next to him without anything disturbing him

If concerns me slightly as their dad is like this, deep sleeper. He didn't hear our fire alarm go off. He also didn't hear me scream I had broken my leg when I fell to the bottom of the stairs

Yes, DD1 is a very deep sleeper. DD2 seems not bad either but she's still very tiny so too soon to tell really. With DD1 I can easily watch TV at normal volume with her asleep (and we used to cosleep and sometimes I would watch TV in bed; it never woke her up). She slept through a literal brass band going past her window once Grin

KiraKiraHikaru · 09/09/2022 20:28

A mouse farting down the road will wake my baby up.

An elephant stomping directly on my 8 year olds head would not be enough to wake her.

Anywhereelse · 09/09/2022 20:28

Yes, DS(7) is a very deep sleeper. He has slept through the night since 7 months old and I’d say I can count on both hands the number of times he has ever woken up during the night (and it’s mostly been if he’s been sick). The downside is that he stills wets the bed, partly because he never wakes.

I was the same and my parents use to joke that a brass band wouldn’t wake me.

CMOTDibbler · 09/09/2022 20:32

My ds could sleep through anything. When he was in the preschool room at nursery they had naps on little mats on the floor and he liked his sleep and would be out for 2 hours - they were all allowed up after 1 and the others would be running round and he'd sleep through it. 16 now, and he still can sleep anywhere and stay asleep

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 09/09/2022 20:32

I once wallpapered dd's bedroom while they slept! Never tiptoed around the dc! Can also vaccum at any time of night!

Ushkin · 09/09/2022 20:32

Oh god OP, just enjoy it you lucky thing! Rarely a night goes by where my (pre-teen) DC don’t wake me.

Recycledcurtains · 09/09/2022 20:35

No, we are all quite light sleepers. I’m probably the best sleeper in the house. My husband is one of those people who likes to think he can exist on virtually no sleep (he can’t…) and the children seem to take after him 🙄

Argh I couldn't cope!

Tell them to go watch their tablet and leave you in peace!

DS has slept through an earthquake, a thunderstorm right overhead, the smoke alarm and a fireman breaking his door down when it got stuck 🤷🏼‍♀️

Delabruche · 09/09/2022 20:43

Yes they all are and it's a pain as ds17 will sleep through alarms so I need to wake him up. They also don't appreciate that the slightest noise wakes me up.

geraniumthefirst · 09/09/2022 20:43

Dd is literally dead to the world when she falls asleep. I could host a full of rock concert in her room and she wouldn't stir.

Downside is that she still needs nappies at night (although to be fair she is only four), and the fact that once she is up, she is UP and doesn't stop moving/talking/dancing/jumping until she is once again asleep.

A580Hojas · 09/09/2022 20:45

Yanbu to ask. Why would you be unreasonable? Why is this question in AIBU?

Workyticket · 09/09/2022 20:47

We all are in our house - we're always 😮 when people say they've been kept awake by storms / a car alarm etc

Ds was a NICU baby and it was so noisy in there we never kept quiet once he was out

We used to be able to transfer him from the car into the house, get him undressed nappy change, jarmas on and a dream feed done before popping him in the cot!

PeloFondo · 09/09/2022 20:48

I sleep like my dad Grin
We got burgled once, living above a pub. My mum got up with the alarm (giant red bell type) going off in their room. She rang the police, the police arrived, she let them in, they searched the pub, and couldn't get the alarm to stop going off. Dad? Still asleep. With the police stood there asking if he was a drinker as he snored through the whole thing
Mum used to say we both terrify her how deeply we sleep Blush

YukoandHiro · 09/09/2022 20:48

My 5yo is a really deep sleeper once she's gone off. I can go into her room, turn the lights on and tidy up, put clothes in the wardrobe etc, and she won't wake. It's actually annoying because she's still in night pull ups because she literally cannot wake up if she needs a wee in the night. I don't know how long it's going to take to get her dry; at the moment I'm still waiting.

But my almost 2yo wakes up if someone coughs in the next room. Just like me...

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/09/2022 20:48

DD1 - no - light sleeper and early riser
DD2 - 90% sloth - can sleep through anything, could fall asleep literally anywhere as a baby and toddler (face plant into lunch numerous times, just flat out on the floor so much we were tempted to draw chalk body outlines and one notable instance where she fell asleep at the top of a slide)

YukoandHiro · 09/09/2022 20:49

@geraniumthefirst ha! Exactly the same situation but a year ahead... no sign of losing the pull ups yet Confused

NinHuguenAndTheHuguenNotes · 09/09/2022 20:51

My eldest was the world's worst sleeper when he was a baby. I hated when anyone came round and having to keep reminding them to keep their voices down. He would be wailing at the slightest sound. Now 14, he finds it hard to switch his thoughts off, but once asleep he could sleep through a brass band. DS2(10) has always been able to sleep through noise.

We're having a loft conversion at the moment and the builders were cutting through steel beams during the summer - it was like an earthquake. I went into their rooms to see if they wanted to go out and get away from the noise and they were both snoring away🤣 DP was wearing ear defenders and still couldn't stick the noise!

QforCucumber · 09/09/2022 20:52

@Anywhereelse mine too, he’s 6.5 and had a toddler brother who screams in the night and wakes at a pin drop. Doesn’t wake up, but most nights still wets and will wake up soaked completely non the wiser. It’s so frustrating and really worries me for him getting older

MrsJamin · 09/09/2022 20:54

I remember a talk by a fire fighter who said that young boys are the deepest sleepers and at most risk of not waking from a smoke alarm, as in the sheer majority of young boys sleep through the loudest of alarms. Anecdotally, this makes sense as my sons were both deep sleepers but are a bit lighter now in their teens. This is why we have a smoke alarm that has a recorded voice as it's more likely to wake children up than a traditional noisy alarm.

Yanbu to ask. Why would you be unreasonable? Why is this question in AIBU?

Why do you care?

Strawberry0909 · 09/09/2022 20:56

DS1(3) can sleep through anything even his little brother screaming, right next to him!
DS2(11 months) wakes at any change in noises which is very frustrating!

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2022 20:57

Yes dd is sparko once asleep

slerps through thunderstorms fireworks car alarms etc

always made noise around her when little

AloysiusBear · 09/09/2022 20:59

You could ring a church bell next to my son and he wouldn't even move.

My daughter would stir/toss and turn but wouldnt fully wake up.
