To think the UK has suddenly got a lot more dull??

King Charles is such a different prospect from Queen Elizabeth II. He lacks her Gravitas, her iconic image and will not be the fascinating draw to tourists that the Queen was.

And then Liz Truss. I just wish she was less like an automaton. Her speech yesterday lacked any humanity or eloquence. It didn't even feel stateswoman-like. She was the Prime Minister that got to utter those incredibly historic words "Long live the King' and she delivered them like she was delivering a statement about VAT. I dislike many things about Kier Starmer but at least his statement had some sense of genuine warmth and empathy.

A week ago it was flamboyant Boris (yes, I know he was an arse) and Lizzie on the throne. Great Britain PLC is a decidedly more dull entity now.

Tourists don't come here 'for the queen.' That's just royalist claptrap.

Politics isn't supposed to be about voting for the funny ones.

Absolutely this.

Dull and competent is what I want. I doubt either Liz Truss or Charles will live up to my hopes.

😆

King Charles III certainly sounds like something from some long past century, but that’s what you get with a hereditary monarchy.

I'd rather our politicians were both effective AND charismatic speakers, I think that's what separates politicians from civil servant researchers. Politics involves an element of performance.

Unfortunately standards have dropped so low in the UK we only get one or the other.

I'm just coming back to this thread to say, whilst I thought Liz Truss was an automaton, I never expected her to malfunction in such a spectacular fashion! And PLEASE don't let Boris have a comeback - what a fecking insult to the country that would be. What utter chaos.

Interesting times indeed but can it stop now??

Lol - whatever you want to call the UK nowadays, it's certainly not dull!!

Hbh17 · 21/10/2022 19:00

Less dull now! And - love him or hate him - if Boris returned as PM then things would stay fairly interesting....
