I find it hard to think that the family will stay in the castle where the queen will also be?

I suspect she will be embalmed and the process has already started or been completed on site at Balmoral. So there won’t be any smell or unpleasantness. It’ll be like she is asleep.

I was wonder, do they have embalming facilities at the royal castles? Surely they don't take her to the nearest mortuary?

They will have brought everything required to the castle. George VI had a lung removed at Buckingham Palace and surgeons were on hand to do c-sections for the Queen if needed. They can accommodate bulky medical and surgical equipment easily as the rooms are so big.

They embalmed the king at Buckingham Palace.

KosherDill · 09/09/2022 19:58

I suppose they do have portable equipment and such. It's creepy to think about.

It's really normal and healthy. It's a wake really. Please, please don't be scared. She is at peace.

I was going to say don't marry into a Orish family then. Things are very different and a lot more healthy imo. We are too detached from death in England. It's sanitised to the nth degree

Completely agree.

İ wondered if they put her in the big cooker they have for storing deer carcasses 🙁, and then I thought a mobile embalmer was probably more likely...

Darbs76 · 09/09/2022 21:06

I wouldn’t have a problem staying in the same place as a relatives body. In fact I would have suggested we brought my dad home for the night before his funeral but my children were present. I found spending time with him in the chapel of rest very healing. I know it’s not for everyone.

Wbeezer · 09/09/2022 21:26

OMG, my post was supposed to say "chiller " not cooker. I've got a cracked phone screen and keep missing autocorrect fails as I'm typing semi blind 😯

@Wbeezer, I wondered!

Another morbid question: Where was a coffin procured on such short notice? Does one always travel with the monarch, just in case? Or is there a suitable one stored at each residence?

Is whatever casket she is in now be "it" for the entire lying in state or do they swap into something more regal for the Westminster portion?

Same with attire -- would a burial outfit be on hand at all times, especially at her distant estates? Is whatever she was dressed in yesterday the final ensemble or do these things get changed out when there is such a long lag between death and funeral rites?

Sorry if these questions are crass but I can't help wondering about the logistics. Particularly after, say, age 80, one would think the royal household would be at the ready at all times.

Is the same true for Charles and Camilla, do you think? And even Wiliam, for that matter. I guess they have to face these facts fairly early in life.
