Stuck my head in the size regarding cost of living

Have realised this month the reality and how horrific this will be for families

I did my switch quote this week

Lowest I can get down to is £400 for a one bed flat (high ceilings large tenement flat in city)

What have you all been estimated for your property? And what sacrifies will you have to be making?

Listening to the radio this morning was so dyer. My heart goes out to anyone who is struggiling.

So @Sunnyqueen - so you're paying £5 more off your bill than you were, why do you say 'not sure how I've managed thus' Confused

Don't know how I've managed this but just got my new dd amount, says its for the next 3 months... Its a fiver more than what it was so still under a 100 for both gas and electric for a 2 bed house.

But the direct debit amount doesn't tell you how much you are using or what you pay per unit. You can't compare prices using the direct debit amount.

Because everyone else's seem to be doubling apparently so why is mine only a fiver extra? Sorry does that make me a thicko fucktard with the iq of a hamster or something?

Are you on a fixed rate?
If you are then price rises won't affect you...yet

If you arent then there is a price per kwh/standing charge rise due in October (around 85% higher rates) so direct debits may have to rise at that point even if your usage stays the same.

Drivebye · 08/09/2022 12:02

Because @Sunnyqueen in reality it doesn't matter what your DD is because it's about what you use. The DD is the energy company just setting an amount that they THINK, based on your previous usage, you will pay.

Drivebye · 08/09/2022 12:04

But it isn't even about being in a fixed or variable! It's about your usage. Yes, your unit cost will be less on a fixed but it's about what you use.

@tigerbear A smart meter measures what your using like a regular meter, but can send readings direct to your supplier so your direct debit will be adjusted if you cut your usage. It can link to your smartphone so you can see what appliances are costing the most. It won’t change the rate you’re on, but it’s a useful tool to help you cut your use .
A prepay meter is one where you have to load up a prepayment key with money at a shop and pay in advance - the energy companies charge more per unit for this. It tends to be for people who they don’t want to give credit to. It’s real scandal because they penalise the most vulnerable.

Currently £193 for a two bed semi. I logged on in the week and the automatic calculation suggested I lower it to €170ish, but I'm happy to build up a credit for the winter.

@Sunnyqueen You’re probably still on a fixed tariff so the price rises haven’t kicked in yet for you , and the change in the direct debit only reflects what you’re using. Stay on the tariff your on just now, but be ready for a big jump
