AIBU to be terrified of thunderstorms?

Just like the title says really. Have always been scared of thunderstorms, not sure why. We currently have one raging here and am hiding under duvet like all mature 44yr olds do.

My grandmother used to switch the TV off and turn all the mirrors round to face the wall - always made my grandad smile. Happy days, I miss them so much.

Older people often tunred off the TV because the big aerial on the roof might act as a conductor and set the house on fire.

I love them. Partner and I opened the curtains the other evening and lay in bed watching the spectacle.

Oh, you're not alone. I am terrified of thunder and lightning, triggered by a very traumatic experience about 10 years ago when the house was struck. It made me realise that we are not necessarily safe from lighting just because we are inside, and now just a distant rumble of thunder sends my heart rate sky high.

It's awful, genuine fear, and IMO not irrational.

@katiepants27
How much damage did it do? Completely terrifying.

Shattered several electrical sockets, left a scorch mark up the wall, and fried several electrical appliances. Debris from the sockets were thrown in other rooms through the doorway. This all happened in the pitch black as it had also caused a power cut. Luckily me and my husband were in bed so unhurt, but I will never forget the sound. I genuinely thought I was going to die.

When I was a little girl we lived with my grandparents.
My gran was terrified of thunder and would hide in a walk-in cupboard taking me with her.
This in turn made me frightened.
I swore that when I had my own DC's that there was no way we would be hiding in cupboards. So I got interested in it. Learned about storms And it worked..no hiding for us.
No we do it with our grandchildren

I never was scared of storms until Monday morning at 2am when our house was struck by lightning! The whole house stank of burning, (barn conversion) and the electrics blew and most appliances that were plugged in have blown. Trying to sort that insurance nightmare currently for those and building work to repair the 3 holes in the ceiling that the strike caused.

I've always been terrified of them too, my nan was terrified of them and would freak out if we were out in the car and she heard thunder so I may have picked up on her fear, although I've always been easily alarmed by loud noises. I had a friend at school whose mum was apparently hit by lightning on 2 seperate occasions whilst horseriding and sruvived both times luckily.

Yeah that sounds incredibly likely that someone’s mum would be struck by lightning twice while horse riding

Seriously Pickles would you like to buy a star or something from me because you sound really gullible

Yes I am quite gullible sometimes, does that make you feel superior does it? I can think of worse things I could be than someone who believes the things their friends tell them.
