I'm only covering a couple of weeks' leave as a supply teacher so my last day is a week on Friday, but even that seems impossible.
The year 7 and 8 classes are good. Not perfect, but manageable.
9 are ok. Year 10, it depends.
Year 11 however are absolutely despicable.
It's a massive top set, 34 of them. Didn't even have enough desks yesterday

Oh and if you're doing supply, don't be afraid to try special schools, PRUs etc. Some of my best teaching experiences came from these types of non-traditional places (and you'll never have 34 in a class, more like 4).

Good luck whatever you choose to do.

I’ve done supply for a decade and have left a few schools when behaviour was poor. It’s not the kids, it’s whether the leadership are going to get off their backsides and muck in.

Currently, I have a tough group but loads of support, and the whole school has received a chrome book so we can undertake a Paul Dix course on behaviour management.

If they weren’t, I would have been long gone! I enjoy working with the tricky kids but if slt don’t support it just doesn’t work.

Put yourself first, the school needs to recognise how to change things.

It’s not your circus, not your monkeys!!

You really don’t owe them anything. If it’s affecting your sanity and well being, then don’t stay - it really isn’t worth it, believe me.

I mean it's a language with a completely different alphabet etc. So even as cover work i think I'd struggle

completely different alphabet?

I'm intrigued 🤔

Russian? Greek? Hebrew?

That's assuming it's European, someone mentioned mandarin🤷‍♂️.

I thought for a brief moment, as these are unruly boys, teach them how to talk to a girl in the target language. That might catch their attention.

Just leave, it's a waste of time giving your pearls of wisdom to these swine. Your specialism is a gift to education, it's not to be wasted on babysitting.

I'm amazed you're still there OP. Walk today and never look back!

axolotlfloof · 09/09/2022 16:20

I have been there 20 years ago.
It was shit.
I got through it.
Try and give the good kids some positive attention, even 15 year old want to be liked.
The SLT absolutely need to step up.
Mine didn't though - my head of dept was out sooo out of her depth, the head was off sick all year. It was a shit show. Poor children too.

walk out if it's unbearable. If you want to give it one final try, try a new approach. Do something they are not expecting from you. Ignore them. Sit down at your desk. Watch their behaviour. Even if its bad. Do nothing. Wait. Do nothing. Wait. Sit straight. Look right at them. Do nothing. Watch them - get the class to watch them, wait for them - do not respond to their behaviour (thats what they want). Get the ones who want to learn on your side and get them sick of the ones who are acting up. Get them to start watching their own behaviour and when they realise you're not responding to their attention seeking behaviour and people are getting fed up of their childish silly behaviour, you can then begin the lesson. If they still won't cooperate, send them to the other side of the room to misbehave so you can teach in peace. Tell them you don't care about their behaviour but you're sure the head teacher will when you file your report at the end of your cover period.
