To wonder if new PM will call a snap election?

What do you think? I don’t think it’s particularly likely she’ll call a snap election soon, but I’m open to the possibility she might. I’m also wondering how long she’ll be PM for tbh, and if the party will turn on her as they have done with the other PMs we’ve had in the last few years. Just curious and idly wondering really.

Fat chance.

What possible advantage is there to be gained by going now? Is suppose you could argue that it’s best to have an election before people get to know her and/or the inevitable recession. However, no-one is going to thank her for months of campaigning, with no effective government, at the current time.

Now really isn’t the time. Nothing can be done while an election is in progress so that would push any changes to the economy almost into next year.

as much as I would want the tories out no-one should be wanting an election at this point.

They said Maggie wouldn't last.... and she was there for 18yrs 😱

They also said May and Johnson wouldn’t last. And they didn’t.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 07/09/2022 07:53

As much as I'd love an election soon as it's unlikely the Tories would win (main reason I think she wouldn't call one anyway ), we need the Government fully focused on the mess we are in as a country.

Echobelly · 07/09/2022 07:58

No way - they're far too vulnerable at the moment with low public morale; they'll be hanging on until next election slot in the hope things will be better by then (not through any effort of theirs of course).

RoseAndRose · 07/09/2022 08:03

The Tory Party is hell bent on making itself unelectable.

The internal squabbling and penchant for purging leaders is simply dreadful.

I had thought that Boris had got that tendency under control when he purged them, then got biggest majority for ages.

But they've gone straight back to the bad old ways.

I don't think it's quite the end of the road for the Tory party, but there's definitely a gap for a non-extreme, right-leaning party that doesn't tear itself apart at every opportunity

Justwantanicepeacfulholiday · 07/09/2022 08:05

Not a chance. She has nothing to gain and everything to loose. The conservatives have a comfortable majority in the commons and they’d loose that in an election without the Brexit vote.

AugustaHope · 07/09/2022 08:27

That would be brilliant.
But no. She's not that stupid.

@MarshaMelrose You are less cynical than I then! 😃
Let's 'meet' on MN in 18 months to see which of us is correct! Mw

Was that going to be an evil genius laugh? Mwah ha ha haaaa.

She’s no Maggie.

OfficiallyBroken · 07/09/2022 13:17

She can't possibly be that stupid.

Labour may not look attractive still! but the conservatives could lose enough votes across the board to create the need for a coalition government again...and this time I don't think any political party would prop them up.

SatinHeart · 07/09/2022 13:18

I can't imagine she will after what happened when Theresa May tried it.

sashagabadon · 07/09/2022 13:18

Why would she? She has inherited a 70 plus seat majority and so can do whatever she wants. Theresa May called one as she had a small majority ( which then got worse at election) and Boris inherited a stalemate brexit situation from Theresa that only a general election could sort out - which it did.

Reallybadidea · 07/09/2022 13:19

She needs a 2/3 majority in HoC to call an early election. Labour won't support that if it looks like she might win and why would she call one if it looks like she'll lose?

The good news is that the party has shot itself in the foot majorly by electing her and as long as the opposition parties keep their heads, the whole stinking mess of Tory corruption will be out of power for a generation. This is what I keep telling myself anyway!

CapMarvel · 07/09/2022 13:19

At the moment the tories would lose a GE, so of course they won't call one.

Whether they should, of course, is another matter.

oldestmumaintheworld · 07/09/2022 07:04

Not a chance. The economics don't work to win. Simples.

This. They'll be pushing it till the last possible date in 2024 and hoping things have miraculously got better and we've all forgotten about Johnson's parties and lies by then.
