I wish I could join the 'Don't Pay' cause against the energy increase

A group has formed with people pledging to cancel their direct debits from 1st October if a solution to the energy crisis isn't made.

Unfortunately I'm on a prepayment metre so can't get involved. I'm spreading the word as much as I can though and I'm protesting.

AIBU? Is anybody here planning on doing anything like this, and if not why?

No I'm not as I don't fancy being forced onto a pre payment meter or to have a mountain of debt. If people really believe they're just going to get it for free if they don't pay then more fool them. I get the idea of some sort of action, but ultimately they want people to use less over the winter anyway so switching people over who then will have nada if they don't pay upfront generally suits them.

DashboardConfessional · 06/09/2022 17:42

Because I don't want a default leading to collections on my credit report?

abovedecknotbelow · 06/09/2022 17:43

It doesn't work like that, so no.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 06/09/2022 17:44

No, because they'll end up in debt that will have to be repaid. They won't just wipe it off.

The energy bills are being frozen this week.

Aposterhasnoname · 06/09/2022 17:45

Nope because 1. There’s going to be a price freeze, 2. I don’t want to get into debt, and get forced onto a prepayment meter and 3. I’m not stupid enough I think that it will have any effect.

The goal is to get 1 million people to strike, do you think the energy companies have the resources to force so many people onto prepayment metres at once?

I'm genuinely curious btw, not being at all goady.

I've always been on prepayment metres so have no personal experience of paying by direct debit.

dementedpixie · 06/09/2022 17:45

You'd still need to pay for your energy so I think its a bit pointless to cancel your direct debit

CantPay · 06/09/2022 17:45

DashboardConfessional · 06/09/2022 17:42

So we just do nothing, roll over and pay the astronomical increases?

Qwerkie · 06/09/2022 17:46

If you don’t know anything about it perhaps you shouldn’t be plugging it as an option

You could join the Enough is Enough movement and join our arrange protests in your area.

CeeJay81 · 06/09/2022 17:48

Wait till Thursday she's going to anouce a price freeze. So no need to cancel direct debits. Not that I was going to anyway.

They might not have the resources to force so many people onto prepayment meters at once, I have no idea, but they have resources to do it to some and what if you’re (general you’re, not specific you’re) one of the some they do it to? People don’t want to take that chance.

It won't make a blind bit off difference to the energy companies. There was reports last week how energy companies about how they are buying more prepayment metres. So they are ready to install them.

I think it said they have already got over 200,000 warrants this year to install prepayment metres.

CantPay · 06/09/2022 17:45

Yep.

Of course they can't install 1 million meters at once, but that doesn't help the first ones on the very long list, does it?

Precisely this. Maybe the people who aren't worried about their credit rating already have shit credit so don't care 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yup. And I also believe some are goading people into it without any intention of participating themselves, just to see the fallout

ClocksGoingBackwards · 06/09/2022 17:53

I wouldn’t do this because I’m not entitled enough to think that I shouldn’t have to pay for things I use.

I have reduced my direct debit down from the amount they wanted to charge, and if I end up in debt than so be it. But it makes no sense not to pay at all, and I’d rather have a direct debit than quarterly bills.

SeasonFinale · 06/09/2022 17:54

No because they can actually cut you off really easily for non payment and then you have to pay your bill and a reconnection charge too as well as wrecking your credit ratings.

DashboardConfessional · 06/09/2022 17:54

This is being treated like "Let's all buy Killing in the Name and get it to Christmas Number One to spite Simon Cowell" and I think it's dangerous.

gamerchick · 06/09/2022 17:57

My DD isn't going up, which really surprised me. So no.

Minimalme · 06/09/2022 17:59

I already have a fucked credit rating and because I have two disabled children, they couldn't cut me off or put me on a prepayment meter.

I still wouldn't cancel my direct debit because I would view it as stealing.

It is an awful situation though.

CantPay · 06/09/2022 17:59

Those who think people should do nothing, are you able to afford the much higher rates?

What should those already in poverty do? Not everybody can pay the bills.

OP posts:
DashboardConfessional · 06/09/2022 18:02

Speak to their energy supplier like a grown up. They are obliged to help you come to a solution. Not cancel their direct debit and post they've done it on Facebook for likes.

dementedpixie · 06/09/2022 18:02

If they can't afford to pay then they talk to their supplier. There are funds set up to help. Stopping paying is not the way to go
