It's a Universal, not PG, so I just put it on with popcorn as a treat for the last day of the holiday. But I've Googled it and it says 6+. What do you think?

Different kids have different triggers for what they find scary. My eldest got really upset and made me turn off tarzan because of the opening sequence, he thought the animals would hurt the baby. It was at an age where he'd seen Harry Potter and stuff like that! Not long ago ny 6 year old got upset at the Wizard of Oz, when Toto had to jump out of the witches castle. He was so worried that the dog wouldn't make it that he couldn't bear to watch!
Even if they do get scared it teaches you something about their personality, and experiencing fear through a film helps them process that emotion safely.

I mean they have watched things, but not a full movie (1h+). We have even been to the cinema but it was to watch the Gruffalo, just 30 mins long. And they just watch some cartoons on TV but again they are just 20 mins long.
Is that weird?

If you’re weird then I am. My oldest wouldn’t have seen a full length film at that age. My second would have… and my third is a year younger than that but has sat through all the Harry Potters already in the company of his big siblings 😂

How funny, I didn't think it would be that unusual that she's never seen a film. We considered it during lockdown when she was 2/3 and thought it might be a bit long for her to sit through, and then it's just not come up since, maybe we've just been busy or something!

Now I feel like I've deprived her of so many great films!

She loved Ice Age (the random choice is because I found the DVD as I was looking for something in the loft).

I got worried when I was making dinner and she shouted "mummy, mummy, I think my favourite (the mammoth) has died!!". But luckily it came back!

As PP, she was too engrossed to eat her popcorn. So cute.

Glad she enjoyed it. So many lovely films she can watch now you know she will sit through them.

It is strange what bothers kids in films though, both mine sat through all of the 1st 6 star wars films without batting an eye lid at 2/3 but DS2 sobbed hysterically when the children went to bed after So Long Farewell in The Sound of Music I had to turn it off, DS1 won't ever watch ET again as he was so sad at the end. They are teenagers now and neither will watch sad films at all plus watch the worst horrors they can possibly find.

Anything U is fine. Some PGs are fine but some are a bit scary for 4.5yo.

It is nice you haven't seen them as now you can catch up together Smile

It's not weird at all OP. Maybe in today's day and age but seeing the adverse affects of too early screen time and over stimulation on a child's brain I say well done you.

PugInTheHouse · 07/09/2022 09:21

Greenerfingers - I would be interested to know what detrimental effect sitting watching a Disney film with their family has on 2-4 yo olds. I can totally understand gaming or being stuck inside watching TV all day. I would say watching films together couldn't be harmful. I am genuinely interested though, not being funny about it. It had just never crossed my mind.

greenerfingers · 07/09/2022 10:46

If you do a quick Google search for journals on the adverse affects of young children under 4, (originally was under 8/9 but they changed it) you'll find some studies. I studied it at university and they found screen time to delay speech, damage the forming synapses in a child's brain etc. It wasn't something I'd heard of till studying it.

PugInTheHouse · 07/09/2022 11:37

I'll take a look, thank you, it's going to take a lot of convincing for me I think as there are many different ways children develop, watching and learning from TV is just one. I can imagine it is extremely damaging if it's all they have mind you.

@BeALovingFamily

no it's not, very few under 5 actually sit and watch a full length film!! (If only!!) many have seen the start a lot of times 😂

kids are weird! One would watch hours of realistic looking dinosaur stuff/sharks (our world & stuff) but would cry at Dinosaur train! Weird little things!

lovely number 2, is here!! 😊
