Why do men put the tea towel or oven gloves over their shoulder when they’re cooking?

Just that really. DH does it. He slings them over his shoulder as if he’s bloody Gordon Ramsey. Then I can’t find them because they’re on his stupid shoulder. He’s only dishing up crinkle cut chips and beans fgs.

Oh no
its just me then who doesn’t 😂

I don’t. I think it’s a bit grim…

It must be determined by the same gene that means they can only used one hand when pushing a pram.

I don't, and I'm a man! Mind you, I am forever looking to find where I put them down mid-cooking, so perhaps I should?

Try it! If only to piss your partner off who looks around in vain for the fecking tea towel or oven gloves and then spies them cunningly draped over your shoulder like a floppy dead thing.
Hidden in plain sight.
It’s the perfect way to annoy someone, trust me.

Dh does that. Drives me insane

I don't like seeing this, gives me the ick. I always think of the person breathing on it or dropping dandruff and hair on it. Not too bad if it's your own DH doing that though, I guess....

Yes I'm surprised at all these apparently trained cooks/chefs saying they do it. I'd be hung drawn and quartered if I did that in any kitchen I've worked in. Basic kitchen hygiene.

ShaneTwane · 05/09/2022 21:07

I do this all the time (woman) and dp does this never (man). Where do we stand in this debate?

Hah! Everyone stays out of the kitchen when I'm cooking so she wouldn't notice. I'm not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing! (Obviously, once I've served up, the gloves go back on their peg. I'm not a barbarian.)

TeaMoreToast · 05/09/2022 21:07

DP does it and I don't know why. He's never worked in a kitchen. It annoys me when he's standing over the stove stirring, always think the end is going to flop into the pan.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/09/2022 21:11

I tuck mine through the ties of my pinny apron at waist level (just tea towel, I’ve never owned an oven glove).

catsonahottinroof · 05/09/2022 21:11

Mine does it too and I don't like it - mainly I think because it's not very hygienic. We do have several tea towels on the go at once though and I now have a system and use set grey ones for taking things out of the oven/slinging over shoulder.

NiqueNique · 05/09/2022 21:12

DH doesn’t do it and neither do I. I leave a tea towel within reach on the counter, and it’s put back in place when I’m done cooking.

iklboo · 05/09/2022 21:13

I tuck mine in the waist band of my trousers / leggings. Easier to have it to hand than put it on the side.

vipersnest1 · 05/09/2022 21:15

I do it too! And wear a special cook's apron if I'm having a full-on batch cooking sesh. Grin

Vallmo47 · 05/09/2022 21:16

We don’t do it but surely it’s so you don’t forget where you’ve put it or set it on fire or something? 😂

Noln · 05/09/2022 21:16

My DH does this. I'm always standing with wet hands looking for the bloody tea towel that's not where it should be, it's on his shoulder!

MissingNashville · 05/09/2022 21:17

Snooks1971 · 05/09/2022 20:52

Right. I’m going to deliberately ignore the lovely posters who do this all the time and only fixate only on the ones that agree with me.

How dare you side with DH 🤓

Is that not how the AIBU topic on here works, is there any other way? 😂

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/09/2022 21:18

I remember bar men used to do that with a tea towel and then dry a glass that they had just swished about in a washing up bowl of murky water to serve you your drink...
... I surprised we're all still alive really.

So do I, unless I'm wearing a dress and no apron (when I do the over shoulder one) Smile

Eminybob · 05/09/2022 21:23

I'm definitely going to start doing this as I always lose it when I need it!

I thought people only did that on tele Shock

Never seen anyone do it IRL!

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 05/09/2022 21:27

@BogRollBOGOF I actually find it very sexy when my DH does that!😁

ReluctantCourier · 05/09/2022 21:28

ExH started doing this after he got into Masterchef. Also said he was ‘plating up’ and generally ran about panting like the Michelin guide ppl were breathing down his neck 🙄 It’s not why we’re divorced but I don’t miss it…

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/09/2022 21:46

My husband doesn't do this, should I be concerned that he is in fact...

...a woman 😱

jesusjoan · 05/09/2022 21:50

Is this the same men that put their other arm behind the passenger seat when they're reversing the car - with their head swivelled 180 degrees.
