To think you can overcome most allergies

I am not talking about the big allergies like peanuts etc. I mean pet allergies and intolerances.

OP posts:

To be fair, OP probably means allergies that one grows out of.
My brothers cow's milk allergy meant that he was hospitalised on many occasions as a young child, and once stopped breathing completely. Now he can eat and drink anything

There are a few allergies that manifest in children that eventually resolve. There aren't many though.

I grew out of an anaphylactic allergy so it definitely can happen.

I read somewhere that Kate was having some sort of treatment to get over a horse allergy so she could ride with Charlotte.

To some extent you can. My DC both have severe allergies.

DD has taken part in the BOPi trial and currently eats 6 peanuts a day. clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02149719

DS took part in the SOCMA clinical trial and currently drinking 120ml of milk per day having previously been anaphylactic to trace amounts. clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02216175

They are not considered to no longer be allergic. If they stop taking daily doses of their allergen they become anaphylactic again as we found out the hard way.

You can have desensitising treatment to reduce allergic reactions, but only for some allergens, and for some people. I used to have the one for grass pollen when I was a teenager. It didn't mean that I 'overcame' the allergies, but it took the unbearable edge off during the worst of the hay fever season (right in the middle of my O levels and A levels). I still had to take 6 piriton tablets a day even so.

Some people can grow out of allergies and intolerances, as a pp says above, but most people are stuck with them for alifetime and anybody can develop new allergies at any time.

I haven’t got any research backing this, it was a question not a statement that came from DH having a dairy allergy when younger but not now. No need to attack me! Bloodyhell

YABU to create a theory based on the experience of one person.

SleepingAgent · 04/09/2022 23:19

OP if you'd even spent 2 minutes on Google learning about CMPA and how the gut matures in children etc, you wouldn't have posted this ridiculous AIBU.

Eerrrr that can happen! ... but not with everything people have allergies to

Why would you open your mouth when you've no understanding?

JaceLancs · 04/09/2022 23:25

I wish
I’m 58 and the list of my allergies grows all
the time
The reactions are also becoming more severe - I live in fear of some insect bites and stings and carry Epi pen everywhere

SleepingAgent · 04/09/2022 23:27

Oh and if you're asking a question, rather making a statement, there's something really helpful you can put in your post or title.

It's called a question mark. Here you go:

I grew out of my childhood allergies, if that's what you mean. But then I developed a new crop as an adult.

There is one of my adult-onset allergies that I can 'overcome' through desensitisation. But it's not reliable and I have to do it again every year, which suggest that I haven't 'overcome' that allergy at all.

People find it very difficult to believe that I have allergic eczema and contact dermatitis because my skin is mostly lovely. That's because I scrupulously avoid my allergens, and slap on the steroids as soon as possible if I'm exposed.

No, you cannot overcome allergies and intolerances. You can only grow out of them or live with them.
