To not buy new school stuff even though we could afford it

I was wondering today ...

DD seemed a bit down and I wasn't sure why. She's got nothing new for school this year (going to Y8) as she got a new bag during the year, her shoes still fit and aren't broken, I bought secondhand blazers from PTA, skirts and blouses and p.e kit still fit. I tend to buy new when things break or they grow out of them, and preferably secondhand when it comes to clothes as there is so much which already exists I don't like creating more manufacturing and buying new unless it's necessary.

So, AIBU? Is it nice to start the school year with new stuff? Like a new start. What do you guys get new? Is there a compromise and if so, what is it?

Mine always get second hand on the grounds it is more environmentally friendly.

If you can afford it, then yes buy it. You sound mean to not buy her one or two new outfits like you know most others will have. No wonder she’s feeling upset.

I usually get new shoes but only as only get them once a year but if I’d have replaced them last term no way I’d buy more. My DD is going into year 10, blazer and skirts still fit from year 7, this year she got new blouses for first time since year 7 and new shoes. I wouldn’t buy for the sake of it

Wow things are very different here then. I don't live in England but still UK and if a kid turned up with something from the previous year they'd be teased! It's not even a consideration to use anything from last year! DD is primary school so whole new uniform, school bag, lunch bag, bottle, stationary, the lot! DS, on the other hand is going into year 13 and asked me not to bother getting a new blazer or bag and I had to ask if he was sure that was ok as it's alien to me to not buy new every year. It's always been that way since I was a kid.

How would they know it’s from last year if it’s uniform? It’s the exact same style of clothing

Maybe its because she understands your point of view that she hasn't said anything?
