To refuse to buy my 10 year old daughter the "Zoey 101" magazine?

I mean, with all the stuff they are sticking onto the front cover, it makes me wonder which issue will have a pregnancy test on the front of it?

I think after all the recent publicity over JL Spear's pregnancy, should she still be promoted as a role model, or for someone your daughter should aspire to be like?

I realise that the TV series is about a fictional character, but don't they (childrens TV actors) have some kind of responsibility to act in a way that is appropriate to the age of their "Target" audience?

Does that make sense, or is it pregnancy hormones sending me a bit daft?

I thought this too, when I saw the advert for it!

DH said that DD3 (9) wouldn't be aware, but as we have older girls who are aware, she actually is, and seeing as what is going on right now isn't exactly good press, I did think it in a bit poor taste.

Maybe other girls just won't be aware at all, and after all it is about a show and a fictional character, rather than Jamie-Lynne Spears the 'person', but still, she is recognisable and girls do still aspire to be like their fave celebraties and will 'notice' certain press surely?

so no, not your hormones, I think many other mums might actually feel the same way

The magazine was printed long before Jamie-Lynne Spears' pregnancy, so bad timing rather than poor taste really (my sister works in magazine distribution, and she got my dd the first few issues six months ago ... they went straight in the bin because dd is only 6!).

I think children won't particularly be aware of the fuss about the actress; it's a drama series and I would have to hope that children will identify with the character, not the actress. Unless they're allowed to read Heat magazine as well ...!

i think YABU, as you say it's about the character. if your daughter is mature and aware of JL's experience it may be a good opportunity to bring up why having a baby so young is not such a cool thing to do and how JL spears is not going to be able to do all the fun stuff that zoey 101 does.

i don't JL was really thinking too much about her responsibility to her fan base when she got pregnant accidentally and no tv star can think of their image 100% of the time. in the end she's reponsible for herself and her baby, not responsible for the life choices of her fans.

she's too young, she was very stupid and probably misguided but i admire how she's dealing with it. she could have sloped off for a quiet abortion and no one would have known any better. she's a kid who's having a baby and like all young kids having babies, to a greater or lesser extent, her life is going to be changed beyond her imagination. from what i've seen from the press she's announced it but has in no way made out that it's a great thing to be doing.

The first thing dd1 (12) said when she saw the advert was,"She's pregnant!"

BlindBint · 22/01/2008 19:41

That's the thing that is bugging me, the Zoey/jamie-lynn thing. My daughter actually said "Zoey 101 is pregnant" when she saw the advert. She doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between Zoey the character and Jamie-Lynn the person. She also asked if her new baby will be in the magazine when it is born.

Like with High School Musical-the main lad in it, I think he is called Zack something or other, was being interviewed on BBC, and my daughter wondered why he was in a suit and not basketball clothes. She told me off and said it was Troy, not Zack!

I'm sure I'm not the only mum who knows that their children do not realise that the characters and actors are seperate people.

To be fair,my dd was referring to Jamie-Lynn but I do agree there are people who don't differentiate between actor/character. (Not just children either ).

doodledandy · 22/01/2008 20:14

I thanked god I have boy children when I saw the advert on TV - what a load of utter tosh. I think it should be shredded.

Go · 22/01/2008 22:14

who are these people? is it a tv programme?

TooTicky · 22/01/2008 22:17

Oh heck, is it that bad? Dd1 (11) bought it yesterday.

sabaidii · 24/01/2008 13:43

I have seen worse....italian magazines, for example. My friend's dd talks about such filth. When I asked her where she's gotten her info, she told me "from Girlfriend." She's 11.

Unfortunately, magazines have to keep up with the times, therefore, they have to cover "interesting and current" information. I think some of them are a waste of time, really.

TheLadyEvenStar · 26/01/2008 02:23

I must be old fashioned
1, i am glad i have ds's lol
2, i would not buy a mag for a child where the actress/child on the cover was actually pregnant now..whether it was printed pre pregnancy or not....i don't think she is a good role model for todays children....but hey thats just my honest opinion,
3, i don't think children need encouraging to wear make up.....but hey what do i know i have ds's so it doesn't really meet the criteria of either of them lol
