Fuel bills / incomming pm/ hysteria

I have this idea( hope)! That we are being whipped into huge fear levels and hyteria re bills.. and that this is deliberate in part, because then if the new pm comes in and actually helps with this , to any degree, they will be hailed as a public hero... gaining favour and distracting from other issues.
I do wonder if we are being played ? Maybe its just a hope in one way re bills.

I'm not sure that this was manufactured by the government initially. But now spotting the opportunity as much as possible will be made of the new PM/Chancellor swooping in and saving us all.

TBH my energy bills are predicted at £526 per month so they can take whatever credit they want, I just need my bill to come down!

QueenOfHiraeth · 04/09/2022 23:01

We certainly aren’t being whipped into a frenzy, this is a good example of the media doing its job in reporting correctly and accurately the pressures facing millions.
I'm not sure about that and am confused as to the part the media are playing and why. I spoke to a friend, this week, who is currently living in another European country . She said she generally watches news in that country and the media there are talking about the potential problems but pragmatically and among other issues so she was shocked when she watched BBC news and saw the hysterical fear-based reporting taking over all other issues. She told me she was horrified and concerned by the difference

Do you think the govt caused the war in Ukraine?

Iliveonahill · 04/09/2022 23:09

A Tory MP posted on fb yesterday that there really is nothing the govt can do regarding the energy crisis. Any financial support will just fall on the next generation to pay and they are reluctant to do that. Our debt is already massive. I think we are all being screwed. Pubs will close. How will schools, the nhs and local govt pay their energy bills? It isn’t just households.

BMW6 · 04/09/2022 23:10

Well Liz Truss isn't going to be President of the whole of Europe is she so that "theory" holds no water at all

BMW6 · 04/09/2022 23:13

If I were Liz Truss I'd call GE immediately, make sure Labour win and let them cop all the shit heading their way.

Gives Conservatives time to breathe and regroup

showmethegin · 04/09/2022 23:45

I'm really not being facetious here but can someone explain to me why when wholesale prices are going up all over Europe we're the only ones being hit so hard re bills? Germany's bill have only gone up 23% I believe and they got far more of their gas from Russia than us? In addition to which our standing charge has doubled too?!

worriedatthistime · 04/09/2022 23:52

But its not just us is it , germany have had to bring in help measures etc so its not made up

You really think the government are clever enought to strategise this?
They're thick as mince the lot of em

Dunno, they made you hysterical enough to believe that you needed to lock yourself in your house as a healthy adult, because if an illness gang would most likely not impact you.

Not you personally, but the population in general.

So they’re clearly not that stupid.

sst1234 · 05/09/2022 01:08

I don’t think it’s to do with the new PM, but in general the idea is to get everyone to believe that their energy bills will be £1b a year. So that when they land at £1m, everyone will be thankful for being saved by paying 10x more for their energy. But at least it’s not £1bn.

It’s not too dissimilar to being locked in your house as a healthy adult being paid to do nothing while the govt prints money and tanks the economy. But hey, people could get enough of furlough at the time, while banging pots and pans like idiots in the street. Paying for it now though, literally.

MeetthemoveratDover · 05/09/2022 01:09

This is happening all over the world though.

This is happening all over the world though.

Exactly what the US govt said in 2008 to their people, even though they actually caused all the pain for their own population.

It’s not happening all over the world. It being printing 1/2 £trillion to pay for locking up healthy people. A currency that’s in free fall due to inflation caused by the Covid policies, making us less resilient to energy prices rises. An economy that is not growing and not not likely to. Successive governments from Blair onwards that failed to plan for energy production.

Its poor policy making in this country that is causing it.

wackamole · 05/09/2022 01:19

Well, if it's "hysteria" then there's no real issue, so no need for the government to do anything, unlike in the rest of the world.

Sorry I think this is rubbish

cocktailclub · 05/09/2022 04:59

I think the media are making people worry more but not necessarily for no reason. And the incoming PM will actually have to sort this out regardless of any hysteria because ultimately everything a Tory party holds dear will be impacted. As others have said, share holders and business owners won't want to spend their profits on fuel.
People with disposable income might spend on fuel but cut back on luxury items which will impact business.
People earning low wage will be in serious trouble.
They will have to act to save the economy even if they don't really care about people and even if selling off national energy companies was partly an issue.

The energy crisis is occurring internationally, although it is particularly dire in Europe. As much as i dislike the Tory Party they have not engeneered this on purpose. Certain political decisions have definitely made the crisis worse for the UK (e.g. closing down gas storage facilities in 2017). The UK is also far more reliant on gas than many neighbouring countries, with Russia cutting of supplies there just isn't enough to meet the current continental demand.

The difference between the UK and other European countries is the level of support being offered to citizens and businesses. We'll have to see what the new PM announces, but the panic stems from a lack of clarity.

Changes to energy and gas use will need to happen though.

This.

The 'hysteria' is very real in the several fold increase in wholesale gas prices and that's why projected bills are so high.

It's also real that there won't be enough gas over winter and there will be rolling blackouts if we don't cut our usage as a nation, especially if its a cold one.

Best we can hope for is some help towards the increased cost, to try to cut wasteful usage to reduce the impact and also for sympathy from the energy companies towards those who can't pay the higher bills. But seeing as the profit made by the companies who sell us our utilities (who are not the same companies as those currently making billions by extracting and refining it) is relatively small, even they might need help, as their financial stability will be affected by mass default by its customers.
