Trigger warning for arachnaphobes

I am terrified of spiders. I live alone and my heart is still pounding from getting this out of my bath into a pint glass. Its body is bigger than a regular wasp and it has a brown waspy pattern on it's 'back'. Am I being unreasonable to think this horror could have bitten me? I'm never going to sleep again 😔

p.s. how the feck am I going to let it go? There is a book on the top of the glass at the moment.

Thank you for catching it (and asking how you’re going to let it go), and not squashing it/hoovering it up/setting your dog on it! 😊

Could you take a piece of stiff paper (and envelope would be perfect) and slowly slide it under the glass? Then you’ll have a base to carry it with.

LadyLothbrook · 04/09/2022 11:23

I found two in my cup of water! It's spider season alright 👍

@LadyLothbrook they are the same type. Your picture is much better resolution than mine. @decafsoyaflatwhite I have a book over the glass at the moment. Just trying to pluck up the courage to leave the glass at the end of the garden and run like hell. Can it bite?

Teand · 04/09/2022 11:28

You did better than me OP. I end up spraying them with chemicals because I don't like going near them when they move.

PupInAPram · 04/09/2022 11:31

@Teand I had a squeezy bottle of vinegar to hand just in case. Thing is, I don't want to kill it. I just want it to be outside NOT IN!

If you put that type of spider outside and they are unable to get back in quickly, you're killing it anyway.

Sciurus83 · 04/09/2022 11:33

No these definitely won't bite you, they are the normal species of house spider we get in the UK totally harmless just a bit gangly! Well done catching it and not spraying or vacuuming or anything like that. Get a piece of card and slide it underneath the glass so the spider is caught then life the whole thing up and put outside. You can knock the glass over with a long stick if you don't want to be near when it gets released!

raindon · 04/09/2022 11:34

What no this is evil

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/09/2022 11:34

It's just a normal spider.

If you flip the book to the underside and carry it outside, when you tip the glass back, it'll run the hell away from the giant terrifying human.

And you'll feel like the bravest hero that ever lived.

PupInAPram · 04/09/2022 11:35

@Sciurus83 long stick - good plan. I think I can manage that. @Keyansier how so?

Brilliant photo!!!

I don't mind spiders, but I'd rather they weren't in my glass/cup!!

No you're not. House spiders can live outside!!

@PupInAPram don't listen to this nonsense, he can have a happy spider life outside! Just take the glass & book outside, take the book off, walk back inside the house, retrieve the glass later today.

he won't outrun you back inside, nor will he stay in the glass.

Keyansier · 04/09/2022 11:42

Putting a house spider outside could kill it – Most of the time when we see a spider, we will catch it and put it outside. Trapping it and then releasing it is returning it to its natural habitat right? As noble as this may seem, if it is a true house spider, it won’t be able to survive outside.

Thelnebriati · 04/09/2022 11:42

Of course they can survive outside, they were around before houses existed!

PupInAPram · 04/09/2022 11:52

@Keyansier how about I compromise and let it go by the shed? I'm sorry but just lifting it up in a glass with a book over it makes me shake. I can't live with it in the house.

I put them outside all the time, it's not my fault they apparently can't live outside, and it's not like they're contributing to my rent.

PupInAPram · 04/09/2022 12:20

"and it's not like they're contributing to my rent" 🤣 The spider I could live with would need very deep pockets. To pay for my therapy....

Aren't 52+ flies a year payment enough? You're a tough landlord.

WavePlant · 04/09/2022 13:56

Kill it.
it knows how to get into your house, it will come back in and bring its friends. Although we are being overrun by false widows making evil looking egg sac balls so if they eat false widows they can stay.

PupInAPram · 05/09/2022 05:29

Update, Arthur Arachnid is free. I let him go under a very large hedge. @NeverDropYourMooncup I don't feel like a hero, but I am proud of myself for overcoming my phobia to do the sensible thing.

OP posts:
miniwh · 05/09/2022 05:33

Just get some Indorex OP. It's meant for fleas but kills everything. You spray it around the house once and it lasts 6 months. Any spiders unlucky enough to be near within that time will die. But it also acts as a repellent - I haven't seen any dead spiders since spraying it. When I first sprayed it I found a few dead spiders as it kills whatever is in the house

PupInAPram · 09/09/2022 18:01

When is hyper crazy spider season over? Soon I hope!

OP posts:
jetadore · 09/09/2022 18:22

Isn’t that just a normal house spider? They do get quite big, and they can’t bite.

Junipercrumble · 10/09/2022 00:54

Looks like a giant house spider. Totally harmless, but can be very fast.
It wont hurt you at all and is perfectly fine outside.
