Boris / Kettle - the maths doesn't add up?

I might be missing something here but just doing the sums on the Kettle revelation from Boris.

New Kettle - £20
Saving per year ( every year) - £10

Which sounds fantastic but what about the initial outlay for the Kettle? My sums make it that it would take 2 years of savings to cover the Kettle cost.

Am I correct therefore that saving £10 per year doesn't come into effect until year 3? And Boris is wrong sayig it's every year?

Of course Boris is wrong. This is a GCSE science standard question.

The bigger point it that £10 off a £3500 energy bill is fuck all.

And the kettle will become less efficient as it ages so will not save £10: every year.

I suppose if you want to be picky about it, the kettle has gone on your Visa card but the saving are coming off your bills so your bills are £10 less every year. You are not any better off until year 3.

We learned how to calculate pay back times in about year 7, strange that these fancy prestigious schools don't give their pupils a basic education.

This sounds like a great idea if you're one of those who's enjoying the current "autumn is coming" doom and relishing the chance to play act at being poor.

Unless of course this is his way of saying that the energy crisis is going to go on for several years, making the kettle worth buying.

Why is anyone taking a blind bit of notice of him? He clearly hasnt a clue about the cost of living crisis for the average man in the street. He never has and never will. He is having a joke at our expense before he goes .

I would love to see his maths.

The trick with kettles is to use as little water as you need.
I am not sure how much more energy efficient a kettle can be - apart from the water volume you use.

Do kettles lose their efficiency over time? I guess a descale helps.

I wonder what he would say if someone asked him 'why?"

He wasn’t suggesting we buy a kettle to save money. It was an analogy for the initial outlay of building a new nuclear power station saving the country money year on year in the future .

I'm not a Boris fan but his comments were taking out of context. It was an analogy into the cost of providing nuclear energy and how an initial upfront cost could be reclaimed. It wasn't meant as a comment on the energy crisis although I'll agree it was as tone deaf as all his other briefings.

It doesn't cost more to dispose of a kettle than to buy one and operate it for ten years. The analogy doesn't make sense.

Oh mate, please, don’t start trying to apply logic to anything uttered by that pillock, not this far in.

Of course it doesn't make sense. Boris is talking out of his arse again.
I can save money faster by looking down the back of my parents sofa for loose change 😂

Anyone who assumes Johnson has a grasp of key stage 3 maths is being very unreasonable.

I know it was taken out of context.

I don't get the maths though.

This is a best selling energy efficient kettle

uk.russellhobbs.com/buckingham-stainless-steel-quiet-boil-kettle-20460

Minimum volume - 235 ml
3000 watts of power.

235 ml of water needs the same amount of energy to boil it regardless of the power - so a 2000 watt kettle would use the same amount of energy as a 3000 watt kettle

It's £40 for the kettle.

All you need is a kettle that you can add 235 ml of water to - if it's just you who needs the water. If there are more people, then any kettle will do.

I think these companies take advantage of people's lack of science knowledge

That super efficient kettle is out of stock!!!

I wonder if those instant hot water taps are even better, I bet they cost a ton though.

They cost a lot of money, you have to pay to keep the water at boiling temperature during the day AND if you take water out, you then add more cold water which needs to be heated.

It's all about the joules.

They won't save you money - and you still supply energy to boil the water.

They are convenient. If time is important to you

Maths is not something Mr Johnson is capable of. An extra £50k each for a bus without opening windows upstairs, £35m for a bridge before even one brick was laid, and that's just whilst he was London Mayor.

He cannot even count the number of children he has fathered, or the number of women whose low self-esteem he has ill-treated.

Yes you are £20 down this year. It might be tricky to afford £20 for a new kettle when you are about to be paying £300 a month on gas and electric don’t you think Boris?

My kettle is several years old and costs one pence to boil enough for a cup of tea.

Haven't seen the numbers but have heard an argument that the Qooker-style taps can save energy compared to repeatedly boiling a kettle (presumably that contains more water than is needed with the excess cooling) as Qooker is well-insulated so doesn't lose heat.

But you use energy to keep the water boiling AND you still have to add energy when you take a cup of water out as it adds more cold water (1 cup's worth) which then needs energy to boil

You canna change the laws of physics.

Really - if you are making just boiling 1 cup, then you need a kettle that can just boil 1 cup.

And not an expensive one - as it has a very long pay back time
