Traffic one with amazing diagram

Blue cars are all waiting on temporary traffic lights. I am in the yellow car turning left on to the road, I look where I am turning and then look right to the direction where cars would be coming from and begin to turn.
Red car is coming in to the wrong lane to turn in to the side road. Red car subsequently beeps and shouts at me?!?!

Highway Code says “do not overtake where you may come in to conflict with other users…eg where traffic is queuing at road works or junctions”. Red car should not have been overtaking. That said, you should have looked left to check there wasn’t a twat (or a runaway horse or a confused learner) where you wanted to go.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles point about the traffic lights is valid too though. Altogether very confusing situation.

You are in the right. It doesn't matter that he was on the main road. He wasn't performing a manoeuvre as pp suggested. He was driving on the wrong side of the road because he couldn't be arsed waiting in line to draw level to the turning. And yes, lots of us have done it! But if an accident occurred, the person on the wrong side of the road would be at fault in this situation. He was an idiot. The situation would be different if, say, he was pulling out around an obstacle and you just bulldozed out of the side street without due care. But that isn't what happened here.

Dadaya · 03/09/2022 08:57

You were in the wrong. You’re supposed to stop at the Give Way lines and give way to traffic on the major road. That traffic may be overtaking or turning off or doing whatever the hell it likes, you still have to give way to it. You should have waited until the major road was clear before joining it.

I'm confused here, if the red car is behind cars that are stopped at temp traffic lights then surely he shouldn't be going anywhere as there is the possibility of cars coming the other way as their lights will be on green?

Notjusta · 03/09/2022 09:07

Even if this was completely your fault OP (I don't think you were), I would let you off on the strength of the diagram alone!

I would assume he looked, nothing was coming, so he started his manoeuvre. That's generally how it works. OP has looked, looked the other way, then driven out of her junction. It's easy to see how these things can happen.

BadNomad · 03/09/2022 09:20

If he'd looked he would have seen the OP waiting to turn into the main road. No matter how you twist this, he should not have been driving down the wrong side of the road to turn off it. He was sitting in traffic. His light was red. He should not have moved.

raindon · 03/09/2022 09:25

Red car is an idiot. You should have been watching put for idiots. YANBU though.

RaRaRaspoutine · 03/09/2022 09:37

Red car was a twat. Diagram is stunning.

balalake · 03/09/2022 09:39

Was it a BMW or an Audi?

billyt · 03/09/2022 09:51

Red car was an arse. Totally wrong to be so impatient he couldn't wait to turn right, while ignoring any cars wanting to come out of that road legally. What would he have done if you had been turning right as his angle of approach would have been all wrong. And people saying what he did was legal as he was overtaking across a broken white line are wrong as he wasn't overtaking to get past the line of traffic, he was turning right and decided he was more entitled than everyone else.

Like those twats who cut the corner when turning right. One did it to me yesterday and mouthed off when I wouldn't reverse so he could continue his dick move. I was more than happy to wait for him to back up and turn the corner correctly (except he struggled as the traffic behind him had filled the gap).

A car turning from a major road into a minor road has priority over a car turning from the minor road into the major road. He doesn’t have to wait for the other car to exit because he has priority.

Even if he's on the wrong side of the road because he can't be bothered waiting in the queue until he draws level with the junction? He wasn't swerving round a cat or pulling out from behind a parked car. He took a completely unnecessary risk to save himself a couple of minutes.

I’d agree with you, if he was positioned for the turn. If you truly believe that is correct. Anyone turning could just storm past all the cars on the road to turn moving or not.

I know someone who lost their husband in a similar accident. Vehicle over took as person was pulling left out their drive so looked once but didn’t check again that there wasn’t someone on their side coming towards them.

other driver was sent to prison for dangerous driving.

puppylovey · 03/09/2022 12:25

Thanks for the strong support for my diagram! Grin
I did look both ways before I pulled out!
