Is this a snub?

the company I work for are very hierarchical and all of our tasks typically have a team assigned to them, eg lead, manager, analyst. I am the mid level and have an analyst working for me.

Just got an email from the boss congratulating us on the task and I was copied in last, both in terms of my email address and my name - like an afterthought.

I honestly don’t care but no one ever does this at my place, it’s super hierarchical and has made me feel really paranoid - like my input is useless? Or at least less useful than the others. When he has congratulated us in team meetings, he says my name last too, after the analyst’s.

Am I overthinking? I may well be —am hormonal—

I think this does sound like over-thinking tbh.

Miriam101 · 02/09/2022 22:05

Definitely over-thinking. I have consciously re-ordered people in emails after a colleague who IMO was ridiculously thin-skinned saw conspiracy in a similar thing and I wouldn't want to offend anyone, but seriously, I really think it means nada

MichelleScarn · 02/09/2022 22:08

Definitely over thinking! Is it actually hierarchical? Do you Input names into emails in this manner? Is it company procedure?

MardyBumm · 02/09/2022 22:15

Massively overthinking! When I send emails, I order them in a specific way to ensure I don't forget everyone. For example, when I send a whole school email, the first addresses I add are SLT then I start at nursery and list everyone to Year 6. If I input names at random, I would miss someone out. It's not because I think SLT are the best. Maybe your boss has a similar way of trying to remember everyone.

DecorateTheTree · 02/09/2022 22:25

Someone had to be last! I mix my email cc people up so they don’t think I think their less of a person cos of their job title - especially those who share a job

ManateeFair · 02/09/2022 22:35

You’re overthinking it, massively.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 02/09/2022 22:57

Depends though.

Are the others male? Then maybe you’re being unconsciously biased against.

Is your name last alphabetically? Probably nothing to it.

Jalepenojello · 02/09/2022 22:59

Dunno, did you put less work in than your analyst?

FlissyPaps · 02/09/2022 23:03

when I’m sending emails to multiple people
in the CC I’ll either do it in alphabetical order, or in order of where they sit in the office.

Don’t give a second thought about it OP. Like a PP said, someone has to be last.

It would be worse if you weren’t included at all.

Googlecanthelpme · 02/09/2022 23:04

As pp said above, are you female and the others male?
Or is there some other commonality with the others which he might be “pooling” them together in his head?

Another option could be that he purposefully puts the lower staff first for it to seem more encouraging and supportive and like “humble” ? Is that the word I’m thinking of?
so rather than you being purposefully last, they are purposefully first and you’re just last by default because you’re the most senior of the team?

i do similar things to this, if I’ve been working on a project with my Analyst I will say “X and I have done XYZ” when in reality I did 95% of the work and they did 5. I always say “we” even if I mean me or them, I promote them in all my interactions with senior management and colleagues.

Have you ever seen them address another managers team?

Ccoffee · 03/09/2022 10:12

People really think about the order of cc emails? It's never occurred to me, I just put them in as I think of them. Have definitely never looked at where I fall in the order of addresses when I'm cc'd.
