Yes it’s a little early but hey ho. I saw the below on Twitter and it made me laugh.

‘Can’t wait for this year’s John Lewis advert. A freezing family are huddled around the Christmas Tree, unwrapping a solitary gift - a new kettle. A slow, haunting piano version of Polly Put The Kettle on plays in the background. Everyone suddenly breaks out into joyous hugging.’

Old couple, threadbare living room, one bar electric fire which goes off leaving them rubbing their hands and huddling together to keep warm. The old man glances at his wife sadly, she nods: 'well it is Christmas', he puts their last 50p in the meter and the fire switches back on.

They hear a noise outside: excited shrieking of the children from next door, and the doorbell rings. It's the whole family next door. They hand over a present, and (uplifting music) a real Christmas tree!

Old couple hug each other, thankful for the festive generosity of their neighbours. They unwrap the present: an air fryer. Their faces sink. Looking at each other, the wife again nods. The old man finds a box of matches in an empty kitchen cupboard. They set fire to the tree, and sit on the sofa together warming their hands on the blazing tree. Their eyes close and their heads rest on each other.

Camera pans out to the street scene and we hear fire engines in the distance as the flames appear at the windows.

Slogan appears: John Lewis. Not for everybody this year.

Bloody hell! I hope you're not often spot on with premonitions

Nah I'm useless with predictions! Bloody hope so anyway 😱

Ahh! A new kettle… Hurrah! £10 a year saved on her electricity bills 🤣 🙈

I'm guessing it will be a real 'remember the olden days when life was simpler' type ad, with the focus on rosy-cheeked carol singing, multi-generational hugging, open fires, and absolutely no presents in sight whatsoever. Maybe a breathy acoustic version of All I Want for Christmas Is You sung by a children's choir.

Or just a load of penguins huddling together for warmth with a single Terry's chocolate orange balanced on their flippers instead of a penguin chick.

Exactly this. It will be a misty eyed homage to the other hardships we Brits and our stiff upper lips have endured over the decades (which thankfully passed by Littleshireton on the wold, but they did read about it in the Telegraph so it must be true).

Greta Thunberg will obviously make an appearance somewhere in the advert.

She's loving every minute of this, as remember, she / COP26 was the root cause of the skyrocketing fuel hikes, well before the Russia-Ukraine war started.

Say what 😄🧐

I saw a similar post on FB, except it also included the family huddling around the family cat getting spitroast for their xmas dinner.

ifonly4 · 02/09/2022 21:15

I reckon Father Christmas will be looking in on a family scene - I reckon it'll be the Mum standing over her new A+++ appliance, candles on in background, Dad coming in with a glass of something warming and kids trailling afterwards in wrapped up in their throws.

antelopevalley · 02/09/2022 21:26

Family outside wrapped up in scarves and hats and building a snowman while laughing. When they have completed it they run over and join their grandparents who are cooking the Christmas meal outside on a barbecue.

JL want to sell stuff, so won't the family be huddled in Oodies or under heated throws, round a new wood burner, and cooking Christmas dinner in a convection microwave and an air fryer? A veritable shopping list of all the things an aspirational household needs to be "thrifty" these days?

EmmaH2022 · 02/09/2022 21:35

Sorry to interrupt the ad ideas, but that kettle clip was taken out of context, he was talking about nuclear power plants. He was really not suggesting anyone buy a kettle! Which is a shame for JL but my guess is they din't sell kettles under £30?
