Fucking massive wasp. What do I do?

I’m going to sound insane. DH is away from home with work. I’m here with my 3yo DS and DD who is only 6 weeks! I heard something downstairs moving about. I thought it was a burglar. So I made noise and turned lights on and off in the hallway. I then ventured downstairs with my phone ready to call the police, absolutely terrified. There’s the biggest wasp I’ve ever seen. I thought it was a bird! It’s easily 10cm long! I’m not squeamish, I lived in Costa Rica with some massive bugs, I killed a false widow earlier today. But I just went straight back upstairs. I can still hear it hitting the walls, bouncing around downstairs. What do I do?!

Spray it with something. I find polish or Dettol surface works best.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 02/09/2022 01:05

Hornets have a deeper more resonant buzz than wasps. I stayed on a campsite once where they'd gather in dozens around the strip lights at the doors to the loo block, and the hum was LOUD. And they seemed to drip excess venom from their stingers…

Weirdly they weren't at all aggressive, and left people alone.

Yes but wiki says the giant Asian hornet is capable of spraying venom at eyes as well as stinging.

Just give me a run up to this...

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING FUCK?

No no no no no, hard no.

Burn the house down and have done with it.

Ah sorry, thought you were referring to queen wasps.

Giant Asian hornets, I've no idea… they're scary-looking buggers though. I don't think we have them here do we???

Labourious · 02/09/2022 01:07

I could put on DS’s goggles but I’d have to take my glasses off and be pretty blind. I don’t know what I could spray at it to kill it quickly. I don’t want to give it time to retaliate - and I don’t think I could easily crush it.

@ClumpingBambooIsALie Yes we do now. They came recently

Do you not have any Raid or some hairspray??
Spray that at it and then leg it out of the room and shut the door.

PinkAndPurpleAndBlue · 02/09/2022 01:09

OP, please don’t take this as an offence, but I have never been so hopeful for a post to be a troll post!

normal sized wasps are bad enough. The idea of a giant wasp of that size is actually horrifying and I genuinely wouldn’t be able to cope with it. I know that’s absolutely no help to you sorry but you’re a lot braver than me to even be in the same house as it!

This is how I deal with wasps and hornets when DH is away.

Wouldn't believe a word the Express says, but damn, it's right there on gov.uk… BRB, just drawing a few no-go areas on a map.

Felicity42 · 02/09/2022 01:12

Can you get a photo of it.

ThePumpkinPatch · 02/09/2022 01:13

@Accuse Whet part of the UK are you in please? I think under the circumstances it would be fair to us all to state your county at least! 😬

I don’t think I do. I definitely don’t have hairspray. I don’t think I have any aerosols, just the cleaning stuff that’s a spray nozzle so I don’t think it’d work. And the cleaning cupboard is downstairs near the beast so I’d have to rummage whilst exposed.

IdiotCreatures · 02/09/2022 01:13

Leave the window open with an outside light on. It will leave it doesn't want to be in your house.
Just avoid downstairs for the night and keep doors to the bedroom shut.
It will almost definitely leave by morning.

Sorry- I hope I didn’t come across as accusing you of being a troll, I didn’t mean that at all. I just meant that I sort of hoped you were because the idea that a wasp of this size could even exist is horrifying!

it sounds like it’s the wasps home now and I would probably have to move out!

Labourious · 02/09/2022 01:15

Window’s open (which is how I thought the “burglar” came in). No chance I’m going to take a photo, if I go in then I’m going for the kill. I’ll take a photo if I win the duel. I’m in England, Bedfordshire.

You didn’t come across that way, don’t worry. We are actually selling the house so I’ll let the buyers know it comes with a new tenant.

Why am I thinking of this.

ThePumpkinPatch · 02/09/2022 01:17

Bedfordshire. Thank f for that

I would genuinely demand that your DH moves heaven & earth to come home early, if there's nobody else who can come round. This definitely needs to be a two person job

VinylCafe · 02/09/2022 01:18

Can you contain or kill it somehow? These hornets are very bad news as they kill bees and decimate bee hives. Please report it as they'll have to figure out where the nest is and destroy it.

I looked up some info on what the hornet looks like and this is what I found:

The head is bright orange with large jaws and entirely black eyes. The thorax (where the legs and wings attach) is dark brown or black, and the wings are tinted a dark brown. The abdomen has regular black and orange horizontal stripes.
Depending on the bee caste (drone, worker or queen) the size varies between 2.5 cm to 5 cm

I would demand he comes and saves us but he’s two hours away and today was his first day of a new job. I can’t put him through explaining to a brand new employer that he had to leave to help his wife to kill a bug 😂😂
