Relative told my to get rid of my dryer.

probably the most pointless post today...

I get, dryers are expensive. I'm not denying that and many people are trying to save energy, if you can do without a dryer - excellent, I wish I could use mine less. Mine is a relatively new and should be a more energy efficient model compared to older models . Not sure how much it's costing exactly though. I line dry as much as I can. Getting a smart meter in soon so be interesting to see.

Relative is generally hot on not using much energy anyway, even before all this energy crisis. For years they've not turned on heating or used a dryer (despite owning one). Over the years she's come over when it's tipping down with rain and told me to turn the dryer off and put the washing out on the line - in the rain. Or on another occasion she came over when I was recovering from major surgery and told me to stop being lazy and put my washing out on the line despite that I wasn't meant to do be doing much, it was easier to shove everything in the dryer.

now she's telling me I won't be able to afford it this winter and get rid - if only. She seems to hate on dryers.

for me a tumble dryer is a life line, due to the lovely weather we've had I've not been using it much but come winter I will be for sure.

I have two kids, they are both disabled and create a lot of laundry. drying everything indoors on airers is not feasible, for one the amount of laundry I have to do each day (full load at least every day) and we don't have a lot of room and already have a damp problem. Our heating system is on the blink - need a boiler so it would be impossible to dry and would remain damp and smell.

I don't put everything in the dryer. Many things aren't suitable or I don't want to shrink so I use an airer for quite a lot of it, just not all. It's ideal for pants, socks, PJS etc. things like school shirts etc I air dry!! Jeans I usually put on airer for a day or so then finish off in the dryer!

I get the whole 'well we coped without years ago'

but yes anyone else rely heavily on a dryer? And would find it impossible not to use one? Even in an energy crisis??

it's probably the worse thing that could go wrong in my house. Last year my old one went wrong on the coldest days of the year and no dryer for a few days was hell, nothing was drying. It's up there with the machine going wrong!

and yes I must be boring to post about tumble dryers 😅

We're in a drought it's rained twice here in the last two months, how can you possibly need the tumble dryer on? Fair enough in the winter.

I've not been using it much, it's been so dry and warm here. But yesterday it tipped down - which I was happy to see 😅

I've got three kids, plus me and dp. Two of mine are in nappies - washable ones. One has urinary incontinence at ten. Loads of washing. Two loads minimum a day, plus swimming kits from 8 swim sessions a week and football kits twice a week from two of them. Various other sports gear from the children too.
No tumble dryer, no central heating, no damp, no mould, no stinky clothes.

It can be done.

Sorry.
It's bloody hard work though.

So? Just because it can be done doesn't mean the OP has to do it that way. You also said "it's bloody hard work though" no one's going to give you a medal for not using a dryer - you want the extra work then crack on, the OP doesn't so she should crack on too. I don't either and have better things to do with my time than martyr myself over washing (I actually hardly use my dryer as I have space for an airer but you can bet your ass I'd use it if I needed to)

OP how do they even know how often you use your dryer? I've never given it any thought how often people use theirs! Perhaps just stop using is while they're visiting.

FunsizedandFabulous · 02/09/2022 06:53

I don't have a dryer, no room. I dry my clothes on a clothes horse. In winter I put on my dehumidifier on the clothes drying mode. But I live in a flat with no balcony and there's only 3 of us. If I had 2+ kids it would be very different.

Besides it's nobody else's business how you do laundry is it?

UseOfWeapons · 02/09/2022 06:56

Never had a dryer.
And I still think you should do what you like, what’s best for you and your family, and tell her to mind her own business!

SpinCityBlues · 02/09/2022 06:57

Hey, OP. Morning. I’ve just read all your posts and I still don’t see why you feel you have to justify yourself to this woman?

And tbh you really don’t have to justify yourself to posters on here either, yet you do. I think you may need to dredge up a little bit more self-assertiveness. I understand your reasoning, you explained it well, and you don’t have to keep taking daft criticism from people who don’t live your (stressful sounding) life.

Some people have conditions that produce extra laundry. It’s a fact. There’s equipment to help with that. Of course we peg out when we can and use airers; but sometimes dryers are necessary.

I’m currently looking at the most economically and environmentally ‘friendly’ heat pump dryer, after an MN recommendation from another thread.

Hill1991 · 02/09/2022 07:04

I'd be telling her due to the energy crisis you won't be offering her any tea/coffee as you won't be able to afford it due to the cost of the dryer Grin

Goldmember · 02/09/2022 07:04

Tell your Mum them to sod off. You are an adult who is perfectly capable of choosing which appliances you do or don't want to use. I'd definitely be shutting that down ASAP. "I'm not interested in discussing this further".

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2022 07:07

i was very much in two minds when i replaced by washer drier with a washer, no drier, i might have made a post on it!
it is your life, your bills
nobody else's business.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2022 07:09

if it helps op in the winter i dry my washing in the window, over the radiator.
works very well

bellinisurge · 02/09/2022 07:20

A dryer is essential in your situation. It's not a luxury.
Yes, it is expensive to run (consider a heated airer, maybe) but, I imagine you sacrifice other things (nights out to relax, new clothes) that aren't essential to pay for it.
Your relative should mind their own business

Sunnyqueen · 02/09/2022 07:22

It's up to you really but I thought like yourself I needed my dryer. In a very similar situation to yourself but I'm a single parent with 3 kids all in school, do a large load a day, my washer is a 10kg. My dryer broke down so I got rid with the intention of replacing but I actually got on fine without it and realised I didn't need it all. That was about 2 years ago and even in the winter I haven't missed it. No damp smell either (I'm very funny about smells do definitely would have noticed, though I am heavy on the unstoppables so maybe that helps) also my house is absolutely tiny so dont have loads of space to dry but make it work.

Lairymary · 02/09/2022 07:23

Absolutely none of their business, tell them to butt out. We have just moved into temporary rented accommodation where the bills are included due to waiting on our house to be ready. When it's not bright sunshine outside the washing is taking an absolute age to dry and then goes musty, something that really pisses me off. We weighed up the options and decided that a dehumidifier in a sealed room was the most cost effective (we are conscious of the LL's electricity bill).

Oh you hero. Thanks for making the world a better place.

thenewduchessoflapland · 02/09/2022 07:32

It's the MIL isn't it?;mine hated heating and dryers;she'd constantly switch off the heating much to my FIL's annoyance and would put the washing out on the line when it was below freezing and quite proud when it froze on the line.

Maireas · 02/09/2022 07:37

Generations of women have martyred themselves with thankless laundry tasks. It's efficient, effective and you don't have damp washing hanging around. I wouldn't want to be without mine.
There was a woman posting on another thread about socks taking a week to dry because the house was so cold and damp.

Maireas · 02/09/2022 07:40

You're not a better person if you don't use a tumble dryer.
Someone on another thread told me to hang things up in the utility room - I don't have one. I also don't have an airing cupboard. Let's cut women some slack here - it's mostly us doing the laundry.

Maireas · 02/09/2022 07:40

mondaytosunday · 01/09/2022 23:33

I went round to a new acquaintance for a coffee and she had laundry hanging everywhere. I couldn't live like that. My washer/dryer is upstairs snd I only do three loads a week but I use the dryer. I hate how clothes and towels get stiff hanging on the line. I used to hang out the sheets in my old house where the laundry was downstairs and I had a large garden. Not an option now.
Live your life your way and tell your relative you are happy with how you do things and don't need any advice. As for 'in my day' talk - yea well they didn't have mobiles or computers or many things that have made life easier. It's called progress.

Exactly this.

Exactly.

Lots of good suggestions on here but they only really work if you have the space and lots of people live in small houses with no space for heated airers or ceiling pulleys. Ours is a washer-dryer as we don't have space for two separate machines and although I dry outside at the moment, in winter it's impossible as it rains almost daily!

caringcarer · 02/09/2022 08:58

Tell her to mhob. I use mine when we get a few rainy days and I can't line dry. I won't be getting rid of mine

Sniffypete · 02/09/2022 09:54

Never used a dryer, never had a problem drying laundry!

SharpLily · 02/09/2022 09:59

SnackSizeRaisin · 01/09/2022 21:08

We have a dehumidifier instead but I don't know if that uses less energy than a dryer. It is very effective and helps with general damp as well of course. Stuff dries in about 24 hours and we do 2 loads a week (family of 4).
Only use it in winter.

Sorry, I'm aware I'm derailing but under the circumstances how the hell do you only do two loads per week? Sheets and towels alone cover that in our house!

ivykaty44 · 02/09/2022 10:14

not laundering bed covers weekly but waiting 2 weeks, so half one week half the next week. In the summer I do weekly but it’s free and easy to dry. Winter months not so sweaty 🥵

Towels the same, leaving longer in winter

wearing everything twice and everyone else in household dies the same. Half’s the clothing laundry & any ironing

we are still clean and smell pleasant

i recently found out 502 jeans aren’t supposed to be washed 👀 not sure I could cope with that

Newusernameaug · 02/09/2022 10:16

Well aren’t they a nosy interfering delight?!

id be telling them exactly what I thought of their silly opinions!

mbosnz · 02/09/2022 11:19

Sorry, haven't read the full thread, so sorry if this is 'cancel the cheque'!

But I'd be saying to said relative, 'yes dear, so you've said before. So many times. In fact, it's really rather boring, and even more so, none of your business'.

Tdcp · 02/09/2022 12:14

It's absolutely none of her business, end of conversation.
