To want to cancel mobile hairdresser based on her clients?

I have been desperately been trying to find a mobile hairdresser in my area who can come in and cut and colour my hair and trim my little girls hair. I used to go to an expensive salon, and have recently been highlighting it myself to save money.

Anyway a mobile hairdresser came for a quick chat to see what we need doing earlier in the week ? her existing clients seem to be nursing home and sheltered accommodation?.help!! don?t know whether to let her loose on us, perhaps she could just do the colour (I only want highlights) and I could go for a trim somewhere else or am I being judgmental..I?m on the verge of coming up with an excuse to cancel.

mobile hairdressers need to be good at what they do, otherwise they wont have a list of clients.
it could be that she is terrible at what she does. but what is more than likely, is that she simply has that client list as those are usually, though not always, the ones who cant get to the hairdressers. after all, part of getting your hair done, is the wonderful headmassage you get whilst your hair is shampooed and conditioned. not quite the same when over you rown bathtub.
give her a go. she may turn out to be quite good, just needs a break.

Is it really surprising that most of her clients are people who might have difficulty getting out? They are the people most likely to need someone to come to them.

It doesn't mean that she doesn't have the right skills for cutting your hair.

Are you afraid of ending up with a blue rinse and a tight perm?

I would imagine that - unless you have specific evidence to the contrary - she is quite capable of listening to what you want and cutting your hair to suit you.

YABVU. I would give her a go. If she does older people she may be glad of the chance to do someone younger and she is probably very good. Older people like a decent hair cut too.

Give her a chance.

Yes YABU! Sorry
My Gran lives in sheltered housing and has a mobile hairdresser comes once a week for a shampoo and set she does a great job of the ladies and gents. She does do anyone though just so happens in her area there are 2 sets of sheltered housing that she does.

This woman used to be my own hairdresser and became a mobile hairdresser to fit in with her children and DH better. She is a fab hairdresser and worked in a great salon in town. Most Mobile hairdressers do it for similar reasons.

I think it is bizarre actually to be doubting her because of her client base.
I would try her once see what she is like and if you don't like her don't use her again. I doubt you will end up with a blue rinse and a perm
If you don't like the style it will grow back.

betterhalf · 22/01/2008 14:32

I think you should give her a go.

chocolatepig · 22/01/2008 14:40

Thanks guys you are right, I'm going to give her a go. I love this site!

I feel mean now, but still glad I posted my question!

don't feel mean, you posted a genuine question and got some reassuring answers. That's A Good Thing. I think!

betterhalf · 22/01/2008 14:43

scatterbrain · 22/01/2008 14:47

Agree with what everyone else has said - my mobile hairdresser is fantastic - she is the best cutter I have ever had and I have had my hair cut in a lot of posh London salons ! She is also a brilliant colourist and cheap - she is mobile to fit in with her child's school hours - although she works a few evenings too.

Give yours a try - if she's like mine she will be worth her weight in gold !

YANBU - Choosing a new hairdresser is a scary business whether they work in a salon or not.
I'd ask her to give you a trim at first to see whether you like what she does and if you get on.

emj23 · 22/01/2008 16:51

Possibly a little unreasonable if you HAD just cancelled for that reason, but not at all unreasonable to have thought about it. Most people would be slightly concerned at the thought of having their hair done by anyone new regardless of their client list.

My mother is a mobile hairdresser, and her client list has a number of elderly people on it as they can't get out, but she does have other younger clients too as your prospective hairdresser probably has. Some of her customers have been with her for years as not only is she a very good hairdresser, she also charges less than salons do.

As long as yours is a trained hairdresser and not just someone who's worked out how to put rollers in the hair of old women, I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine. Hope it all goes well.
