AIBU?
To do a rubbish job on purpose?

I'm up for a promotion to the CEO of our company (it's a fairly small company, I ain't no big mover and shaker)
Anyway me and the 2 other directors are all going for it.
The final interview is beginnung of October. The week before I'm due to give a presentation to the whole company about some long term problems and my ideas to solve them.
Usually I'd go for it but I feel like I'm giving all my best ideas to the other directors right before interview. I don't want to seem petty but I don't know how to play it. I've been working on these ideas for ages and I feel like I'm just giving all that info to my
competitors but I know they will all say I should just be thinking of the company etc.
How would you play it?
travailtotravel · 01/09/2022 18:31
Oh yes, tactics required. Can you deliver say, the top 3 things, and hold some back for the interview. I'd say its probably wise not to fluff the preso as it will change perceptiion of you at an important time and you'll need everyone's buy in when you get the promotion! (Manifesting/positive thinking lol).

Will the interview panel be in the audience of the presentation?
Hotandbothereds · 01/09/2022 18:35
Won’t the people interviewing you be at the presentation?
If so, everyone will know they’re your ideas if anyone else tries to claim them - in your interview you can refer back to all your brilliant ideas.
FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 01/09/2022 18:42
I would definitely not do a bad job on purpose, you don't want that to be part of the impression that you give to the people who will be interviewing you a week later.
I would possibly try to move the presentation back to after the interviews if that were possible.
More likely I'd do the best damn job possible and try to leave a lasting good impression of my ability to analyse the situation, identify the problems, risk assess the priority, determine a suitable solution, align my strategic goals with company goals and finance/resource constrictions.

Also one to consider (possibly out of your hands) is the order of those semi-final interviews. If you're first, you might beat them to some mutual ideas... if last and they happen to have similar ideas, you can use the time to come up with others and find reasons why their ideas might not work... (played tactically)
IdiotMom · 01/09/2022 19:21
Thanks so much for advice. For boring reasons nobody on final panel will be in the room but almost everyone else will be in this team meeting. But I do agree about the impression, if I'm about to become their boss I don't want to look like I'm clueless. Ah. I guess just keeping a couple of things to myself might be a good plan. Gosh. I want this promotion so bad. DH lost his job
Choconut · 01/09/2022 19:27
When you have your interview can you refer back to the presentation so they know that everyone else has already heard these ideas? Then it could put you in a strong position if they others do actually steal your ideas as it will make them look bad and like they have no ideas of their own.
Hotandbothereds · 01/09/2022 19:38
If the panelists won’t be at the presentation, could you send them an overview after you’ve done it and say these are some key points you’d like to discuss during your interview.

Watch Truss and Sunak. They manage to say loads whilst giving nothing away
Qik · 01/09/2022 19:50
In the meeting, you identify the problems and expand on them. You give part of the solution, but not all of it. You deliver them in isolation.
At the interview you give a more rounded solution. You draw the loose strands together and finish with the 'top three' measures to implement.

"Watch Truss and Sunak. They manage to say loads whilst giving nothing away"
Yeah I'd not give either of them an important job based on their response to interview questions thus far.
