Council have cut all of the blackberries!

It's the end of August, peak blackberry picking season. I've just gone to get some and they're all gone. The council have cut the brambles back more than a meter in some places. I'm absolutely gutted

I use them to make jam and freeze for porridge and stuff like that for the year. I make around 20 jars for myself and my family and it lasts the year. I always leave loads for others and wildlife but the council haven't. (we eat loads of jam and blackberries because they are free!)

They did this a few years ago and I didn't get any at all. I'm so grateful that I've already been and got some in the freezer but I don't have nearly as many as I would usually. Plus this year I was going to make extra as Christmas gifts. I won't be able to do that either.

I know it isn't the end of the world but with everything going up I was planning in getting way more than usual to cut back on the cost of fruit over the year.

Councils love to boast how “green” they - this is just another example of how it’s all for show! They don’t care about the environment at all!

Poor birds have struggled to find food, because of the drought this summer; and now another source of food has gone!

As a pp has said, email your county councillor!

Agree. Stupid idiots.

If these were on the road side I wouldn't be eating these anyway! Horrible..I'd never eat blackberries from road side.

Why not? I've just made a lovely blackberry sorbet. If I can get some more I'm going to make a coulis to have with waffles and pancakes.

There's loads at the back of my garden (and starting to take over) - I've picked all the easy to reach though so you'll need bramble-proof clothing or something that can hook the ones at the back and bring them closer to the fence!

Our council contractors 'Nature' have done the same. I don't think they're gardeners. They just strim and mow everything and sell it as a business.

I had flowers round my whole EOT fence. They just strimmed them all off in full bloom. 😭 next time I knew they were coming, I put huge notices up 'please don't cut the flower borders'.
I came home from work to shredded notices and a strimmed border. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Ha I suppose I could get a bus but that would defeat the object of free food.

I did also read about road pollution contaminating food at the side of the road. its funny how people are told not to pick fruit from the side of the road because its contaminated, yet its fine for us to live, work, go to school and travel on the sides of roads or on roads. Won't eat the fruit but the air we breathe. Very sad. I hate living in a city.

@TheHumanExperience that is absolutely shocking and very upsetting.
