I wondered if anyone can recommend a not too expensive product to use on hair to make it shiny or glossy?

i have shoulder length dark hair and it just looks so dry and dull

I use Aveda damage remedy. It’s not a hair care routine it’s a lifestyle.

Joking aside you need to eat well and be healthy or your body won’t use nutrients for hair.

If you download the Honey app you can get voucher codes from places like look fantastic.

Wash it less? Your natural oils and grease will make it shiny - brush them down your hair.

Moveorstay2022 · 31/08/2022 17:59

People recommending not to wash it and to not put any heat on it must be living on another planet.
Grease in hair stinks, and looks awful
And not all of us can "wash and go" with straight/wavy frizz-free hair, if I didn't blow dry or straighten it I would look like a tree in bloom. This is not a result of excessive use of heat over years, it's been like this since I was 10 years old - before I even owned a hair dryer or straighteners

I use any (or all of) Color Wow's Dream Coat, Pop & Lock serum and their shine spray.

I love the look of that after googling and seeing the video! Does it take a lot of washing out though, because it coats the hair so thoroughly?

bakehimawaytoys · 31/08/2022 18:43

L'Oreal Wonder Water works brilliantly on my hair. It makes it shiny as glass. Olaplex no3 is great too but it's so expensive.

What do you currently use? How thick/fine is your hair?

If it's not fine and you don't currently use any products then I'd recommend an argan hair oil and either olaplex no3 every few weeks or something like loreal dream lengths wonder water.

If you're currently using products that contain protein, or thickening/volumising/strengthening products, it might be that your hair is over-proteined which is making it weak and dry.

Could you explain what you mean about ‘over proteined’ please? I can and will google but you seem to know your stuff! I have a lot of very fine hair and often use collagen/volume boosting products but have noticed recently my hair is dry and breaking more and have been wondering why.

Andromachehadabadday · 31/08/2022 18:49

I used hairsyrup. I have ‘growsmary’ for the roots and the rapunzel one for the lengths. Once a week I Put them on, leave it over night and wash out in the morning. I usually put 2 drops of rapunzel in the ends once I have styled it.

I have fine hair and it doesn’t weight it down. My hair is definitely stronger and seems to growing faster, I am growing my grey out so can see the obvious line of how much it’s grown since I started using it. definitely in the best condition it’s ever been in.

bakewellbride · 31/08/2022 18:50

Coconut oil. Find it in Aldi's cooking section, cheap and cheerful! Leave in as a hair mask then wash out twice.

figmaofmyimagination · 31/08/2022 18:54

L’Oreal Wonder Water here, I’ve got the hair of my 20s back despite years of colouring and heat styling :)

MorrisZapp · 31/08/2022 18:55

Someone on here recommended Schwartzkopf Oil Mist and it's been a game changer. I bought the matching styling oil too. My hairdresser was so impressed with the condition of my hair, and it actually looks shiny.

Cheap too!

Stroopwaffle5000 · 31/08/2022 19:10

Contrary to what PP have said, please don't use coconut oil in your hair. www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/why-coconut-oil-is-bad-for-your-hair

StoneofDestiny · 31/08/2022 19:53

Any of these miracle shine products (shampoo/conditioners) not contain sodium/sulphate - as I've been told they aren't good for your hair.

weegiemum · 31/08/2022 20:11

My dd1 (22) has the most amazingly shiny brown hair. She doesn't colour, doesn't use heat and washes every second day with head and shoulders. That's really all she does and it's half way down her back and just gorgeous.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2022 09:23

Being 22yo probably helps though 😞

MorrisZapp · 01/09/2022 10:28

I don't think 22 year olds are coming on mumsnet for beauty advice 😂😂

georgarina · 01/09/2022 10:30

Philip Kingsley Elasticiser pre-treatment
Aveda hair serum

I naturally have hair like straw and these make it shiny

georgarina · 01/09/2022 10:31

And Kerastase dry hair shampoo and conditioner

DottyDotAgain · 01/09/2022 10:41

I put a few drops of this on my hair after I've washed it - it's the only thing I've ever used that seems to make an actual difference! Makes my usually dull/slightly frizzy hair really smooth and shiny. I don't do anything else with it - just let it dry and comb it a couple of times as it's drying.

Avon hair stuff

bippityboppity87 · 01/09/2022 10:51

I've recently started using Milkshake products. Love the leave in conditioner and is also heat resistant. My hair is much softer and shiny. I have fine, wavy hair (but lots of it) that's prone to dryness and breakage. It doesn't weigh it down or make it greasy. My hair feels much thicker recently too and less fall out
