How would you describe Guernsey as a place to live?

Always wondered what it is like.

My family is from Guernsey but I’ve never lived there. It’s a really lovely place BUT. It’s a bugger to get on/off as you can get stranded by fog very easily. So if you have elderly parents, that’s definitely a consideration.
There’s no NHS, so be prepared to pay for GP visits etc. There really isn’t that much to do, culturally. And you have to drive-there are buses but you will be extremely isolated if you rely on them. It isn’t that wealthy in terms of public services, brexit has hit there too.
It’s expensive to shop! Nearly everything has to be imported and prices reflect that. And I’m assuming that you know about the need for a visa and the local/open housing market? If you have the right to live there, you are eligible for the local market and house presides are 20% cheaper.

However…..it is a slow, gentle and extremely family friendly place to live. The crime rate is very low. The lead item in the Guernsey press will often be a smashed flowerpot, the police are appealing for witnesses, etc. If you have a decent income, you can have a lovely quality of life-living by the sea and taking your kids to the beach every day isn’t to be sniffed at. The schools are pretty good, even state schools.

All in all, it really depends on where you are in your life. If you are ready for a gentle pace of life in a somewhat provincial place and have a decent income, you will love it. You will almost certainly find some like-minded people. But it can be claustrophobic and insular.
