Injuries at school

DD is 5 and has not long started primary. For the second time in 2 weeks I've picked her up from school and she's had injuries to her face which I haven't been called about. Am I just struggling to adjust to the difference between daycare and school? Daycare would always call if there was an injury to the face or head. When would you expect the school to ring you if something has happened? Am I being just being over protective thinking that having an almost black eye and/or falling and taking the skin off her forehead/cheek should warrant a phone call? Do I talk to the school or toughen up??

As long as it's logged in the accident book I wouldn't expect a call for minor facial injuries

If she had banged her head or anything was broken or needed medical attention I'd expect a call

Plumbear2 · 30/08/2022 11:32

As long as it's logged and you receive an injury slip it's fine. Schools carnt be calling parents for minor injuries. More serious is a different matter. Its school not nursery

LeroyJenkinssss · 30/08/2022 11:34

I wouldn’t expect a call because genuinely what are you going to do? Just go “okay” and still pick her up on time.

Also, I’d be a tad wary about being more concerned about minor facial injuries to her. I have seen some parents create such angst over small cuts and it has really affected how kids view those injuries and themselves.

Penguinfeather781 · 30/08/2022 11:37

Depends- I’d expect a call if child was very upset, had a head injury that needed monitoring or needed medical care.

Other than that I’d expect first aid, the incident to be recorded and to be told at pick up what had happened. My answer also depends on if incident happened at 9:30 or 14:45.

fannyfan · 30/08/2022 11:37

What would you say?

'Hi your daughter fell over but is fine apart from a graze to her face but she's playing fine'

You.. 'ok'

SparrowsNest · 30/08/2022 11:40

At our primary school, parents are informed about any minor injuries/bumps on collection and given accident sheet. Anything more serious is notified asap. Eg for us, child had fallen awkwardly on playground and had a suspected broken wrist. We were contacted promptly and picked up to take to a&e.

DinosApple · 30/08/2022 11:41

Where I work at we would do first aid and accident form/log, and tell the parent on collection. Especially if the child settles and returns to normal behaviour.

If they needed to go home/hospital, then the parent would be called.

(Same when my own kids were there too - so not just got my TA hat on.)

saraclara · 30/08/2022 11:43

I taught in a specialist school, and we only called parents if we thought the child might need checking out. Otherwise they just went home with an injury slip.

Trainham · 30/08/2022 11:45

Policy at my school .All injuries recorded even minor injuries and this generates a text to carers ,parenta .but serious ones always a phone call immediately and minor ones by end of day.
How does your daughter say she got her injuries as sounds like may have been inflicted by another child. Speak to staff and see what they say .

mafsfan · 30/08/2022 11:46

Have they spoken to you briefly at the end of the day to inform you?

If so, YABU.

IggyAce · 30/08/2022 11:50

I work in a school as long as your getting an accident slip that’s fine. We only call if we feel that injury needs checking further by a medical professional. Our school is 2 form entry and our poor office staff could spend half the day phoning parents if they had to call for every head/facial injury some days.

winetomorrow · 30/08/2022 11:54

No injury slip and nothing was said (although I collect her from after school club so not from her daytime teacher). I haven't made a huge fuss over it other than to make sure the scrapes are clean and put some savlon on. It was just a bit of a shock to see on picking her up as daycare would have given a heads up for a facial injury which is why I'm thinking I may just be being precious! I'll ask the teacher in the morning about accident reporting in a casual way... and try not to be too 'my baby is a delicate flower' about it!

I work in a school. We would treat and log any minor injury but only call parent if it needs further treatment or if it’s on the face and looks worse than it is/might give the parent a shock when they see it then I’d call and say ‘little joey had a fall, all is ok and has been treated but just to warn you that he has a graze down his face’ type thing.

careerchange456 · 30/08/2022 11:58

It's difficult with after school club. As a teacher I don't have time to hand over to our after school care properly other than real emergencies.

hedgehogger1 · 30/08/2022 12:10

My kids primary school had "red letters" which they'd bring out if they'd hit their head. They also had a "please keep an eye on me sticker". You'd only get a phone call if you needed to come get them

justaladyLOL · 30/08/2022 12:13

~If my sons falls over gets a cut or black eye I do not need to know - it is not serious and there is nothing I need to do
It is all just part of growing up
