Only Took £60 Fuel, Charged For £100

I am being unreasonable, just looking for sympathy!

Automated petrol station, hadn't used it before, you had to select options for £20, £40, £60, £80, £100 fuel, etc. I accidentally pressed the £100 option then thought it would take too long to start again, I would only put in £60. Of course charged for the full £100 on my online bank statement this morning. Its miles away too. No chance of getting the money back. I've only ever used automated services where it charges you for how much you actually take.

Sad

Never seen that before. How are you supposed to know exactly how much you need beforehand? I’d be mega pissed too!

chillipenguin · 30/08/2022 08:54

Seems silly what if your tank isn't big enough for £100

Whycanineverever · 30/08/2022 08:54

Is this not because they reserve £100. When it clears properly it should just say the amount you actually bought?

CrapBucket · 30/08/2022 08:54

OMG I'd be livid, what a shit system. I bet the same thing happens to loads of people.

malmi · 30/08/2022 08:55

That's just the pre authorization. Give it a few days and it will adjust to the actual amount dispensed.

LionessesRules · 30/08/2022 08:55

Is it 99 or 100? Because the pre authorisation amount is 99 usually.
Don't suppose you got a reciept? You can challenge it with the bank - and definitely do that if a 60 charge appears as well.
Hopefully it will all sort itself out.

notanothertakeaway · 30/08/2022 08:56

Some banks put a temporary "hold" of £100 on your account, to ensure that, if you take £100 worth of petrol, there is sufficient funds to pay for it. Could it be that?

I don't see how you could be charged £100 for £60 worth of petrol

womaninatightspot · 30/08/2022 08:57

We have that at our automated station. It charges you for what you select immediately but if you don’t take the full amount it refunds the difference. There is a small notice at the card reader that explains it.I wouldn’t bother going back but if you Google find out who owns it and send an email to check.

SlashBeef · 30/08/2022 08:59

See if it's the temporary hold which should drop off in a few days.

Hopefully it’s this. Call the company and check.

mattressspring · 30/08/2022 09:06

You will get it back. When the transaction goes through the £100 will drop away and you will be charged for the amount you dispensed.

AchatAVendre · 30/08/2022 09:09

Its £100 exactly on my bank statement. Hopefully it will all sort itself out, didn't even realise this was a thing as haven't encountered this type of automated pay system before at a petrol station! I know its "only" £40, but still!

Sooveritallnow · 30/08/2022 09:12

This is just a pre-authorisation. A sainsbury petrol station near me has it.

You select the maximum you want, and it checks you have that much money available before it let's you fill up.
It's to avoid the default £100 hold being placed on all transactions when someone fills up £10, £30 etc,so it let's you choose a maximum amount you want.

Once the card payment is processed only the value of the fuel you took will be charged.

On your statement? Not your 'pending'?

If it's on the statement and not pending then you need to contact the company and find out why they have taken £40

It might be pending. I mean on my online banking. I took the fuel on Sunday and looked today on my phone app and its showing up on that as £100.

Yes this has come in in many petrol stations now where they take out the £100.

They then return the money you didn’t use.

I only know as I couldn’t get petrol this morning as I didn’t have £100 in my account!

It’s worrying as the last week of every month I never have £100 in my account and need to fill up once a week because of my small tank.

It'll be released back to your account soon enough, it's usually back the next day but I always fill up mid-week. It will be a bit longer due to bank holiday.
It is standard practice on automated pumps now.

All automated petrol pumps ring-fence an amount then after a week or so the extra you didn’t pay for the fuel you dispensed should drop back into your bank account. They have done this for a while now & I believe the amount is a standard £99 for most pay at pump options.
If you got a receipt, always get one at automated sites as I don’t trust them, at the time of paying you have proof & can claim back the over charge.

It's only pay at pump that do it, you can still go in and fill up and pay at the counter.
