Sickness new job

misssunshine4040 · 29/08/2022 21:53

Posting here for traffic.

I've just worked the first shift of new job which I love. However I began to feel unwell on the way home and for the last 4 hours I have had diarrhoea and sickness and it's not showing any signs of stopping.

I cannot, I absolutely cannot call in sick on my second day.
Does anyone have any tips to help this go away fast and hopefully be gone by the morning? I've been sipping iced water regularly.

I don't feel unwell otherwise, no fever etc

Imodium and flat coke (add sugar and stir and do not use Diet Coke). Although not a good idea to go in if you might pass it on.

OvertiredandConfused · 29/08/2022 22:00

Please be honest. The last thing they will want is you spreading diarrhoea and sickness through the workforce and clients/customers/patients.

i’ve had staff do this to me and it’s obvious when it’s genuine.

misssunshine4040 · 29/08/2022 22:03

On my second day? I honestly don't think it's acceptable.
I know spreading germs isn't either.

It's a management position and it l call in sick on my second day I can't possibly be expected to be taken seriously and I honestly think they would be looking for a replacement

Please do not spread norovirus around your workplace! That's incredibly unfair and selfish. You cannot go in tomorrow.

OvertiredandConfused · 29/08/2022 22:09

Honestly, if they have anything about them at all it won’t be as big a deal as you think it is. Yes, it’s inconvenient and there will probably be some tutting, but it will quickly be forgotten. Much quicker than you rushing off to the loo every few minutes and then lots of other people being ill later in the week.

I have occasionally had people call in sick in their first week, and even on their first day once. I didn’t decide I wanted to restart a recruitment process on the basis of one or two days sick with unfortunate timing

Knockmealdowns · 29/08/2022 22:09

Sounds like norovirus which alcohol gel doesn’t kill, only soap and water… we all get sick.. stay home.. if you give it to a colleague who has cancer or is on chemo (or has a family member in that predicament) it’s really serious for them

misssunshine4040 · 29/08/2022 22:10

What on earth do I say.? I'm a single mum and this is a promotion and I cannot afford to risk putting it in jeopardy.
I don't think they are going to think it's acceptable.
I can't prove that I have D and V

Immodium, small sips of water/flat coke.
Yes, you perhaps shouldn't spread it IF it's noro, but that's not how the real world works unfortunately.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 29/08/2022 22:16

Call in sick. We once had a new starter who came in looking shocking on his first day and ended up vomiting on the desk. It was awful, no one was grateful he came in, everyone was just annoyed he came in clearly unwell.

That's horrible. Why would anyone go to work that unwell? Ridiculous

That you potentially have a contagious vomiting bug and you don't want to spread it around the workplace. Trust me, they will be very grateful!

waterrat · 29/08/2022 22:19

Op this isnt school you are an adult in a management position you can be honest.

Candleabra · 29/08/2022 22:21

Honestly - you can’t go in with d&v
If I was your line manager i’d understand

pipwoes · 29/08/2022 22:21

Definitely be honest and say how much you love it but can't stop being sick and wouldn't want to pass it on. We had a new starter who came in pale and clammy on day 2 and ended up nearly passing out as he started throwing up at work.
If you go back when we'll it's just a blip

Sleepyquest · 29/08/2022 22:23

It might be that other people you worked with today also have it so it won't look dodgy

Fantasticfroliks · 29/08/2022 22:24

If your boss isn't understanding re this then seriously look for a new job.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 29/08/2022 22:27

Op I’ve been there. And I hear you totally, calling in sick feels impossible.

for me. I popped Imodium at a rate of knots. And Even though I’d been up all night, literally pooping in the loo and puking into the sink at the same time I dragged myself in. I spent a lot of the day in the loo, but I got through it and my the afternoon it had subsided.

so that’s what I’d advise, lots of water and Imodium.

good luck.

LargeglassofRosePlease · 29/08/2022 22:32

I am sorry that you are feeling unwell but it would be very selfish of you to go in with D and V and potentially pass it on to other people, some of whom may be immune compromised.
If it were me, I would be so pissed off with you turning up unwell.
It would go down much better if you be honest and tell them that you are unwell.

HangOnToYourself · 29/08/2022 22:36

Being in a management role you need to be able to make good decisions for your team. Potentially giving them all norovirus is not a good example of making good decisions. Be honest and tell them.

Underroad · 29/08/2022 22:37

Please don’t go in with this even if you feel ok in the morning. Norovirus is doing the rounds and it is so so unfair to spread it. You just call in, explain what’s happened and that it’s infectious and stay off until at least 24 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhoea. They would be far more unhappy with you for spreading it to everyone than for calling in sick.

Mangledrake · 29/08/2022 22:39

If it's a promotion you're known in the company? So this isn't day 2 - you have an established record of attendance? Will that help you worry less?

You're a manager - going in and making the people you manage ill would be a terrible start. Is there anything you can offer to do from home if you feel up to it?

Staying off might raise eyebrows, because not everyone is reasonable, but if it's not a pattern, people will forget.

Get well soon.

PenguinLove1 · 29/08/2022 22:41

To be honest, I would judge someone being off on the second day. It will be a bit better by tomorrow, drink plenty fluids, get some sleep and buy some immodium and cocodamol - the codeine helps stop the cramps and eases the pains.

misssunshine4040 · 29/08/2022 22:42

No not in the same company, it's a promotion from my previous role, a higher paying job with more prospects.
I've just emailed my boss now and gave her a heads up. I feel absolutely terrified that I've just ruined my job.
It still isn't easing up and I feel awful I actually cannot believe this is happening.

OP posts:
ReginaPerrin · 29/08/2022 22:43

I’d be fuming if someone in my team came in with a stomach bug and passed it on to me, so stay home! Is it a job where you can work from home at all (assuming you’re well enough to)?

RaininSummer · 29/08/2022 22:46

If you weren't new manager I would find it pretty unforgivable if you came to work in that state and spread it around.
