To ask what's in your first aid box?

Inspired by another thread, I don't have a first aid box of sorts at home but have various bits like plasters and medicine around the house. Would like to be more organised and have a box of the absolute essentials for 2 x adults and 2 x small children!

What's in yours?

Crochetandcoke · 28/08/2022 21:46

Oh yeah, every kind of stomach medicines like rehydration sachets, Imodium, fybogel, laxatives, mineral salt tablets, antacids, infant gaviscon etc.

YKND · 28/08/2022 21:46

I always remember first aid kits on sailing boats having Kendal mint cake in them. Presumably because it is so disgusting you need to be starving to want to eat it.

NannyR · 28/08/2022 21:49

My "day out" kit that I take with me (as a nanny) to the park etc contains

  • Plasters and sterile wipes
  • A couple of dressings, pads and micropore tape
  • Triangular bandage
  • Burn gel
  • Tweezers, tick remover
  • Foil blanket
  • Sachet of Calpol
Givemethestrength · 28/08/2022 21:51

Wow some of these are very extensive! What boxes do you store all these products in?

Welliesandpyjamas · 28/08/2022 21:52

Inspired by a recent home emergency, we have now added tongue depressors and long curved tweezers, to help pull out choking hazards fron throats.

NB I sat in A&E for several hours with a sharp chicken bone stuck in my throat before hanging my head upside down to use gravity amd saliva to help release it with an enormous cough. I'd have been there for an additional 5 hours (according to their board) waiting to be seen otherwise. On the drive home after discharging myself I decided we needed extra items in the first aid box since the local A&E is so poorly looked after.

whatdodos · 28/08/2022 21:53

General one:
Neurofen
Calpol
Minion plasters
Big plasters/dressings
Bandages
Steristrips
Anti histamines
Cough medicines
Dioralite
Lemsip
Arnica
Antiseptic cream
Bug/insect bite cream
Antiseptic wipes
Thermometer and HR/SATS probe
Random vitamins/creams etc
This is all shoved into a giant basket on top of a really high cupboard which I scrabble around desperately when my little one is ill 🙈

I have my own locked one with ibuprofen, paracetamol, iron tablets all my own epilepsy medication and rescue meds and other things I get prescribed. My mum has a first aid shelf and always has whatever you need!

Sparklingbrook · 28/08/2022 21:53

I never bothered with bandages or dressings/ gauze or anything like that. If it's reached that stage I want a HCP looking at it.

HouseOfWaffles · 28/08/2022 21:54

Like you OP, I have virtually nothing. Some Elastoplasts. Some paracetamol. Half a packet of Lockets. Some eye drops.

EgonSpengler2020 · 28/08/2022 22:03

Paramedic here, I have
OTC meds
Paracetamol (adults & kids)
Ibuprofen (adults & kids)
Piriton (adults, kids & dog)
Rennies
Plasters
Couple of large absorbant bandages (you need 2 for a dangerously badly bleeding wound) the second one placed on top of the absorbant dressing bit of the first one perpincular to the wound and then pressure cranked down through it as you bandage up (any rolled up bandage can be used for the second bandage)
Steristrips
Thermometer

Most other things can be improvised if serious, or wait for the supermarket to open if not.

eddiemairswife · 28/08/2022 22:05

A small box of paracetamol (the last lot was 12 years out of date). Some ancient TCP. A few old plasters.

PolkaDotMankini · 28/08/2022 22:09

We've got a big tupperware box in the cupboard above my microwave. It's mostly packed full of things we never use but have just in case.

Things we use:

  • Calpol
  • ibuprofen
  • paracetamol
  • plasters in a range of shapes & sizes
  • hydrocolloid dressings
  • self-adhesive wound dressings
  • after-bite
  • thermometer
  • Dioralyte sachets
  • inhaler
  • pulse oximeter

Other stuff in there:

  • bandages
  • steri-strips
  • sore throat spray
  • throat lozenges
  • Gaviscon
  • Immodium
  • Rennies
  • meningitis test tool
  • heavy dose iodine tablets that I bought earlier this year when nuclear war was being bandied around the headlines
  • micropore tape
  • tick remover
  • eye wash solution
  • TCP

That's off the top of my head. I'm sure there's plenty more random items in there.

I have a small first aid kit in the car with antiseptic wipes but when we get cuts and grazes at home we just use soap and water.

PolkaDotMankini · 28/08/2022 22:12

Oh yes, a handful of burn gel sachets.

bakewellbride · 28/08/2022 22:15

Dh is a paramedic so fucking everything!

NancyDrooo · 28/08/2022 22:23

Givemethestrength · 28/08/2022 21:51

Wow some of these are very extensive! What boxes do you store all these products in?

Mines in one of those old style baby changing boxes and has:
Antibiotics, painkillers, Imodium, thermometer, oximeter, plasters, bandages, spray plaster, wipes, emla cream (out of date), tiger balm, savlon, antihistamines, calpol, micropore tape, various topical creams.

I recently put tampons in there when I heard they’re good for gunshot wounds. I live in a small village where gun violence is unlikely but you never know! There is even a sterile IV travel kit in there, wouldn’t have a clue how to use it, mind.

The irony is I rarely use any of it, am not remotely health obsessed, and am squeamish about gory injuries. So it’s just sitting there, unused and unappreciated, but READY lol

To ask what's in your first aid box?
LunaLoveFood · 28/08/2022 22:24

I've just restocked our first aid kit and used St . John's Ambulance website. Really reasonable prices and lots of info of what to include.

Hesma · 28/08/2022 22:28

Most above but also antisan bite cream. Also keep ovex since my DD started crying in discomfort on Christmas Day and all of the shops were shut.

QuePrima · 28/08/2022 22:29

I read some of the other thread and was a bit shocked. Same with this one.

I have a constant supply of paracetamol and ibuprofen and some germolene. That's it. I have a cut in the back of my foot and DP pulled some plasters out of his draw so I can put shoes on. I would rarely put plasters on a cut as they need to breathe? I certainly don't have anti septic wipes and all the things listed here that I've never heard of.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 28/08/2022 22:36

Most of the things listed and most of it is out of date when I go to use them 😬.

OneTC · 28/08/2022 22:40

I keep a little Tupperware in my bag with panadol, ibuprofen and anti antihistamines for day to day stuff.

I have a more involved one for activities with dressings and scavenged prescription pain relief
