To ask how to find a hobby…

IamNotCreative · 28/08/2022 20:20

I am in my 30s. No hobby or passion and I would really love one.

Never was able to attend any sort of classes like dance or anything.

How do I find passion now? Life pretty standard now, kid, house, marriage, work, cant really start exploring and doing things i was not able to do when i was 20.

any ideas? Help?

My starting point would be to find out what's on local to you and try to be as open minded as possible when deciding what to try.

Good luck.

IamNotCreative · 28/08/2022 20:25

Thank you for reply. As mentioned i cant really try too much because i have no one to stay with my baby (husband barely home as stays elsewhere while at work) plus we cannot afford it now.

Have a look at local evening classes and see if anything appeals.

Do you belong to a gym? Do they offer any classes you could try?

Shortpoet · 28/08/2022 20:25

What kind of hobby are you looking for.

  • Something crafty where you make things,
  • Something where you research a particular interest and maybe collect items relating to that topic, e.g. a period in history, or classic cars, or teapots
  • learning a language maybe
  • something active outdoors like hiking, canoeing or competitive frisbee or indoors like crossfit
  • Something where you campaign, fundraiser or volunteer for a cause.

Where do your interests lie, what’s your budget like and how much time do you have?

Do you have somewhere that runs evening classes near you so you can try a few things out?

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 28/08/2022 20:27

Think about what you want to achieve - to be good at something? To enjoy the process of doing something? Then, as PP says, look at what’s nearby and be open minded.

oviraptor21 · 28/08/2022 20:29

So it either needs to be something where baby can come too or something where there will be a creche or something you can do at home.

Do you have a budget?

Have you ever thought you might enjoy learning an instrument.
Or making things?
Maybe you could hike with baby in a backpack?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 28/08/2022 20:32

So we're looking for something to do at home.
Cooking/baking
Learn an instrument
Knitting/crochet/sewing
Reading - is there a genre or author or non fiction topic that interests you?
Photography
Fitness
Sketching/painting
Jewelry making

Is there anything you liked doing at school? Anything you hated with a passion? How much space do you have for storage?

Shortpoet · 28/08/2022 20:32

Also YouTube is amazing. I often watch videos of people making things even if I won’t ever have the time and space to do the thing.

e.g. acrylic art pours, making jewellery, sewing historical clothing, fusing glass, reviews of films and books etc. I start watching one thing and it leads me down a rabbit hole to more interesting things

Needmorelego · 28/08/2022 20:32

This might sound bizarre but think back to what you enjoyed as a child aged about 12 when you were stuck at home on a wet Sunday afternoon. What did you do to fill your time? Could it be turned into an adult hobby you could do at home?
Things like crafts, reading, designing clothes for Barbie.....
For example my adult hobby is Lego. AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) are a massive worldwide community.
Find something you could do at home for now while your baby is little. Most hobbies have online forums, groups etc so you can 'talk' to other people with the same interest.
Once baby is older you might be able to join groups or clubs (meetup.com is a good place to look for groups) and then get more involved.

KangarooKenny · 28/08/2022 20:32

So you need to take baby, and it needs to be cheap.
Are there any exercise classes where you strap baby to you ? Maybe ask your HV or Google it.
You could try starting a mum/dad and baby walking/coffee group. Get on a local Facebook group and ask.

IamNotCreative · 28/08/2022 20:33

I know it sounds silly but i dont know what i enjoy…i had very bland life and never ever anything besides school when i was younger, then abusive, controlling relationship when i was at uni, and now pretty busy family life (not the same partner lol!)
i used to play piano at school (tought myself) when i was about 13 yrs old and thats the only thing i did outside of school!
how sad. I feel not interesting and boring

What were your favourite subjects at school? What did you study at university? Could a hobby come out of that?

Shortpoet · 28/08/2022 20:36

I think you need to give yourself permission to explore, try a load of options.

ThatsWahtYouGetWhenYouLetYourHeartWin · 28/08/2022 20:36

I find flicking through TikTok a good way to find new hobbies. Although I'm suspected adhd and I will see something I find interesting, buy the equipment, start and obsess for a month and then never do it again 🤣

MassiveSalad22 · 28/08/2022 20:37

Aw OP ❤️❤️

You can learn so much from YouTube. There is soooo much out there. I have learnt watercolour from YouTube and 2 different artists have given me free feedback as they do ‘I critique your work’ videos. Cost wise I find Arteza 14 page 100% cotton the best practise paper and the paints can be pricey but you can start out cheap. I don’t know if that’s something you’d fancy?

Can you find a keyboard going cheap - gumtree, marketplace? - and start that again? SO GOOD for your brain to get into that focus state that both piano learning and watercolour do! You can’t do much else while doing either of those and I feel it’s really good for the brain.

Also YouTube - TONS of workouts and that’s free!

Craft kits from hobby craft?

Free Duolingo account?

NCT Welly walks (don’t know how old your kid is)?

Shortpoet · 28/08/2022 20:37

Sorry posted to soon. Rather than looking for the one perfect thing, see if you can find a way to low key try a whole bunch of stuff and think about where it pleases you or not.

Borderterriorist · 28/08/2022 20:38

If you taught yourself to play the piano, I guess you are pretty musical. why not join something like Rock choir, they do a free intro session, I think. Just google it. I've started art classes, no talent whatsoever but I find it really relaxing and fun.

IamNotCreative · 28/08/2022 20:40

I like to read (since having a child cannot find time but something i am planning to start doing again)
my only dream is new york. Wanted to do my masters there, always saw myself living in a tiny tiny flat there but in new york (sounds stupid). my visa has been rejected and now cannot afford going there so not much help.

i will google all of the suggestion tonight

There are online book clubs and knitting circles where I live - would you like anything like that? Could be a way of fitting things round your baby?

KangarooKenny · 28/08/2022 20:45

I recently went back to the library, haven’t been for years yet used to go regularly as a child, and with my kids.

Ain't that the truth.

Tho I now try to get used stuff and then sell it again. Doesn't always work!

YouTube, definitely. My DH said I was boring a few years ago...your mind goes where you put it...

Needmorelego · 28/08/2022 21:15

What was it about New York that attracted you? What did you imagine your life would be like? During lockdown I became quite fascinated by Google Earth and really enjoyed finding places from favourite books/TV etc on the map. I became a bit addicted to 'exploring' Manhattan - which led to reading online articles about the history, floor plans of Brownstone houses, comparing old maps with new, online articles about abandoned places...all sorts of random things.
It hasn't led to a particular hobby as such but certainly filled up lockdown time.
