Energy companies' standing charges

If the standing charge is the charge for being connected to energy infrastructure, it shouldn't go up due to the cost of fuel, should it? So why is it going up?

My energy company is going to be approximately £300 light because I will pay for what I have used but not the standing charge. Have stopped my DD so they can't help themselves to my cash!

Brava stolta!!!

The cap for DD customers is £3549. By stopping your DD and paying in arrears on receipt of bill your cap is £3764. Your own stupidity has just increased your energy prices by 6%.

If you then persist in paying less than the amount you are billed then firstly, your failure to pay will be recorded on your credit report, your credit score will lower and you will find it harder and more expensive to borrow money including mortgages.

Secondly, you will be moved on to a pre-payment meter (cap £3608) and whenever you have to top up in advance, an amount will be deducted for the standing charge and for the arrears you have built up. Top up by £25 and you will be lucky to get £20 worth of energy. As someone has pointed out up the thread, if you have a smart meter they can do this immediately and remotely. If they have to come to your house and change your meter you may benefit from a delay as the installers will be very busy.

They went up earlier this year, to a pre-agreed level. It is the cost of delivering fuel to your home. Not aware it is rising again though,

Standing charges cover the daily charge of the infrastructure of supply to property.
it’s the same when you go to a AMT & get charged. It pays the running costs

I don't get charged for using an ATM.

mogsrus · 29/08/2022 14:47

Not all ATMs charge but most of them do

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 29/08/2022 14:52

I mean they blatantly don't but ok

They dont. ATMs that charge are in the minority.
