To ask why dog has random loose stools -this normal?

Before I take her to the vets who last time charged me an unreasonable amount just to tell me to try a diet change 🙄
Starting to get concerned. Cocker spaniel randomly has very loose stools like for example one day its fine pickable
But then some mornings her stool is firm but then in a pile of liquidy mess!

I have put her on butternut box 📦 food now which is very expensive but after research decided this was the best option.
Sometimes will add boiled white rice.

She is fine within herself, plenty of energy but is there anything that could indicate a problem? Its worrying when shes doing it on her walks and its so hard for me to clean up.

Also, she has no treats just her butternut food which has been tailored to her weight, breed etc.

My dog got diarrhea on Butternut Box - dry food is best for her tummy but she doesn't like it so we now feed her on Lily's Kitchen.

She has loose stools intermittently, usually when she's been successful in begging human food. She didn't have a great tummy this morning following a bbq yesterday where she managed to scarf a fairly large amount of pork belly from the grill.

My dog was like this until i started butternut box and has been SO much better since. I do give them a few treats that i know they dont react badly to as they still seem hungry and some research suggested that others have found the calories low for their dogs. It took a couple of weeks to get them fully changed onto butternut and now and again he will still have the odd liquid poop, but like you - vet seems to think he's fine

Macbeth8 · 28/08/2022 16:55

Really confused
What is the best food then for diarrhea?
Some suggest raw food which she was on when I first got her but was having loose stools
Then kibble which again she was having it on and off.
Could there be some underlying issue?
Forgot to say, she will drink water drom our garden pond no matter how many bowls of water we leave out..she just goes straight there!!

How old is she and how long have you had her? Where did she come from?

plantsareglorious · 28/08/2022 16:58

Save rainwater and let her drink that. Put her on chicken breast and rice for 4 days, order pro Kolin and oralade off Amazon. Put her on the pro kolin for a few days, mix it into food. Wean slowly back into lilys kitchen.

piglut · 28/08/2022 16:59

Pro kolin has been fab - good shout

Sorry I mean wean back onto butternut box. Dogs prefer 'natural' water rather than tap water.

The garden pond may well to be blame, the water is recycled endlessly. Mine had diarrhoea today, I think I overdid the raw fish yesterday. You can use human anti-diarrhoea tablets, which contain the same active ingredient-loperamide hydrochloride-that the vet would give you. I used Sainsbury own brand which put an immediate stop to it when one of mine was unwell for several days.

Macbeth8 · 28/08/2022 17:00

I bought her from what I thought was a reputable dog trainer who said she was 2 years
Sold her as a full pedigree, never received any documentation from them..ignored all my calls. Currently in a dispute with them now - another story

Basically got her seen by a vets who put her at around 5 years! Not 2! And said it was likely they were using her to breed!
Very sad. Although the place in question is very popular with reputable views.

Swapping foods regularly won’t help. My two puppies had constant diarrhoea on kibble.

Stretchandsnap · 28/08/2022 17:01

My ALD was like this and have just started him on this www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/yudigest-dog-probiotic?gclid=CjwKCAjwpKyYBhB7EiwAU2Hn2cnR4bmJ-WDxjWO_A52R_QgXNTEkjbWbWXMO1wmSNBFLnRdgwwzB3xoC72YQAvD_BwE and the difference has been dramatic. 2 pills a day with his breakfast (Orijen puppy) Down to 3 solid poos a day and he is so much more comfortable.

Brigante9 · 28/08/2022 17:08

Sorry, me again. I swapped mine to raw and it immediately stopped the liquid poo I’d been having. They have locally commercially prepared minces containing bone plus chicken wings. You could try a small order from DAF: www.daf-petfood.co.uk/select-site/

Orijen is excellent stuff.

Wolfiefan · 28/08/2022 17:12

definitely not Parvo etc.

Mine can't tolerate rice.

Thelnebriati · 28/08/2022 17:26

What has the vet ruled out, have they checked her stools for worms and giardia?
Does she find unmentionable things to eat when she is outside, like cat stools?

WildOats5678 · 28/08/2022 17:28

Just be aware your dog may have a poultry allergy. Mine is horrendously intolerant to chicken, turkey and duck. She is also fed in butternut box but the chicken and turkey pouches gave her explosive watery diarrhoea. Everyone always suggests chicken and rice but a lot of dogs are actually intolerant to chicken.

mountainsunsets · 28/08/2022 17:30

Has she been allergy tested?

Wolfiefan · 28/08/2022 17:34

Parvovirus? Especially if not maybe had the best start.

ProperVexed · 28/08/2022 17:39

@Brigante9 I'm interested in your use of human anti diarrhoea tablets! Can I just give one to my dodgy tummied Labrador? She gets explosive diarrhoea occasionally and pro-kaolin takes a while to work.

Theluggage15 · 28/08/2022 17:45

My dog was at vets yesterday because he has occasional vomiting. We moved him to a mainly chicken dry food from a mainly fish one a few weeks ago and she said many dogs can’t tolerate chicken. Your dog might need checking for giardia. Dogs with giardia often have firm stool in morning but then go soft.

cutmyteethandbitmytongue · 28/08/2022 17:50

Overfeeding can cause loose stools. What is her weight like? Could she be being overfed?

Macbeth8 · 28/08/2022 18:00

Yes always firm in morning
But looser as day goes on!
It must be giardia. They asked me about her vomitting and I said she has only done it once so they ruled out giadia? And said her weight was fine.

Oh that's really strange, my dog's poo changes throughout his walk. First poo of the walk is firm, second not so firm and so on until it's often very squishy. It's like he forces it out before it's ready!
