1 week of intermittent fasting, not a single lb down

Idliketothankyouforajobwelldone · 28/08/2022 12:43

I've been doing 14:10 for a week (trying to build up to 16:8!)
I didn't overeat in my time window, ate 3 small meals and 2/3 small snacks. Balanced diet. I treated myself to a pizza on Friday but that's all.. I'd say I was on around 1200 calories a day which is pretty low. Also exercised several times in the week.
Anyway weighed myself today and nothing at all.
I'm 9st 12 and just under 5'7 so I know I'm a healthy weight. I just have a bit of a belly and wobbly thighs/arms.
I'm 31, so not menopause related or anything that I know of.
Maybe I just have to give it a few weeks?
Has anyone else had success with IF?

I weighed around 8st 12-9st 2 until about 2 years ago, it's just all come on but I don't think my diet has changed. No thyroid issues that I know of.

Lots of people have reported success with this , @Idliketothankyouforajobwelldone , but in this forum:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/weight_loss_chat

I can’t be bothered to post the links to individual topics.

I read somewhere that it can start with stripping your internal organs of the fat surrounding them, which doesn’t necessarily relate well to the scales.

Idliketothankyouforajobwelldone · 28/08/2022 12:48

Ah I see! Possibly the wrong choice for weight loss but thought I'd give it a try ..

yes. Lost over 10kg. But it didn’t happen in a week. More like 6—8 months

i figured it takes at least as long to get it off as it did put it on.

Missingpate · 28/08/2022 12:50

I did but needed minimum 16 hours to see any difference, also better if you also exercise before eating in the morning. Currently in need of getting back to it as I’ve put too much weight on over the summer and stopped my routine, but sadly I seem to need more like 17 / 18 hours these days. There is an app called zero that is helpful for if.

elizabethdraper · 28/08/2022 12:51

3000 calories in 6 hours is still 3000 calories

It doesn't matter if you fasted for the other 18 hours

If you were in a calories deficit you would lost weight or inches

Also if you had pizza, your body is probably retaining water due to the salt content.

You can't look at weight lose in one week lose is not linear

TwoMonthsOff · 28/08/2022 12:52

I’m (most days) doing 16:8 and it is working but very slowly about two months before I noticed any difference, I don’t have scales but clothes are getting looser.
I wouldn’t think you’d notice any difference in one week.

Idliketothankyouforajobwelldone · 28/08/2022 12:53

Thanks, I'll try to just be more patient. Also will try to up it to 16!

I've been doing 16/8 or 17/7 for two weeks. I don't have any snacks. I have a protein shake for breakfast and one main meal, but mostly avoid bread and most carbs. I've lost 8lbs so far.

You need to watch the calories and carbs. No snacks and have a maximum of two meals. I never feel hungry. Drink lots of water. It's the easiest diet and I use an app to keep an eye on the fast times. There are free ones.

Reagol · 28/08/2022 13:24

I'm brand new to IF, been doing 18:6 for four days now, I'm 2lb down. Could just be initial water loss though.

I'm definitely eating less as it's cut out breakfast (300kcal) and no snacks after dinner (500kcal). I've upped my exercise too, running and gym everyday.

Have you tracked your calories? It can be easy to underestimate.

I'm at a healthy weight like you (8 stone 10lbs) but I just need to lose some that I've gained.

Finding it okay so far, just super hungry in the last 2 hours before the fast ends!

Sally99 · 28/08/2022 13:28

I did the16:8 diet and lost a decent amount of weight but it tools couple of weeks for the weight loss to show. The good thing I found about the diet is that with the gradual weight loss it came off all over which is what I wanted. I must do it again

Wombat27A · 28/08/2022 13:29

For reasons to do with blood pressure, I did a really strict few months of alternate day fasting. It took me ages to lose any weight at all. It's not the biggest calorie restriction, even if you are pretty strict.

If you're not particularly unhealthy eating a load of junk or really fat, one week of calorie counting won't do much.

Get yourself a weight app that shows the ups and downs of individual measurements smoothed, it's easier to see the direction of travel.

LemonSwan · 28/08/2022 13:30

I intermittent fast. I really wouldn’t limit calories whilst doing it. The idea is you eat as much as your body wants in infrequent large meals not small regular ones.

I have to be honest I don’t really understand 14-10 or 16-8. Surely that’s just not eating when you sleep. I am not sure I really class that as intermittent even though people do. The aim is to enter a time period where you body is not running on the fuel from your last meal, but on your body reserves. I think is called metabolic switching. I am not sure how much energy sleeping takes but I can’t imagine it’s using any considerable energy reserves as probably still digesting dinner.

If you really want to do proper IF I would throw the timed plans out of the window whilst you adjust. You are setting yourself up to fail IMO as it’s a completely different way to eat and your not going to get to 18-6, 20-4 or 23-1 without an adjustment period.

Eat the largest meal you can and then wait as long as you can before another. And only break fast with a large meal. So maybe start with a late large dinner one day. Don’t eat until your starving the next day, say lunch time maybe, then have a huge late lunch, then day after you might need a large breakfast and potentially a late dinner depending how you are doing.

If you ever feel faint or really sick then stop fast and eat. I also drink whatever I want during fasting but many don’t.

Goodluck ☺️

ElspethTascioni · 28/08/2022 13:34

How can 14/10 count as intermittent fasting? That’s just not eating overnight basically. And the pizza probably undid the pound you might have lost the rest of the week!

felulageller · 28/08/2022 13:37

You are exceptionally slim already. Trying to lose more weight is bordering on disordered eating.

If you are 'wobbly' what you need is more exercise/ weights not starvation diets.

Merryoldgoat · 28/08/2022 13:44

14:10 isn’t amazing for weight loss. Good for health and hormones but it’s generally what the normal pattern should be.

Look at Jason Fung et al on YT for better information.

Essentially 16:8 with an extended fast is better. No snacking and keto will power it up further.

However I doubt you have much weight to lose at all and therefore that may be a bigger issue.

PeloAddict · 28/08/2022 13:52

I do 2 meals and a snack if I need one
So stop eating after tea (whatever time that is, it varies for me) and don't eat until lunch (1-2pm ish) usually about 18hrs
With that, and a LOT of exercise i have lost 9lbs, and I'm really fat so.. it takes a lot

2bazookas · 28/08/2022 13:57

You haven't mentioned the fasting days; they are the essential part of altering your metabolism.

We did 5 and 2 intermittent fasting and steadily lost weight. We used a book of similar name.

anotherpotoftea · 28/08/2022 14:04

Sorry OP but 14:10 isn’t enough for IF. You have to leave at least 16 hours.

FlowerArranger · 28/08/2022 14:05

I've lost 10 lb in about 7 weeks, eating c. 1200 calories a day between 11 am and 7 pm. But it took about 2 weeks for the scales to register a drop. Exercising helps with motivation and reduces pizza emergencies 😄

FriendOfDorothyGale · 28/08/2022 14:35

Under 9st 5 or around that mark, would be classed as underweight.

FlowerArranger · 28/08/2022 14:52

I know I'm a healthy weight. I just have a bit of a belly and wobbly thighs/arms.

@Idliketothankyouforajobwelldone - I missed this.... i think you need to focus on weight training rather than dieting.

I highly recommend Caroline Girvan and her EPIC series - free on YouTube. Use serious weights - enough to challenge yourself but not so heavy as to risk injury. You'll soon see a difference and wave goodbye to bingo wings.

Also do the Bowflex 3-minute plank or similar, and a short abs workout, every day.

And eat healthy - mostly lean protein and lots of vegetables. And no UPF, sugar or refined carbs.
