To drink this amount when breastfeeding

7 week old DS who is bottle refuser, also have a 2 year old. Would love to enjoy a couple of glasses of Prosecco (125ml) on a Saturday night guilt free. Is this ok to do on a weekly basis when bf? Thanks!

Yep! Enjoy!

Guineapiggiesmalls · 27/08/2022 20:35

I definitely would. Enjoy!

Nellle · 27/08/2022 20:41

Absolutely fine. You could have more than that if you wanted to. As long as you're able to look after and safely hold the baby you're fine.

Breastmilk is made in the blood, not the stomach. You'd have to be 16x the drink-drive limit before it would affect baby. My midwife described drinking while breastfeeding as "like throwing a glass of wine into a swimming pool."

Enjoy!

MummingIt2018 · 27/08/2022 20:48

Yes. Enjoy 😁

Thank you for the advice! DH has the ‘burden’ of finishing the rest of the bottle so it doesn’t lose its fizz!! Cheers ladies x

Don’t know who the nearly one quarter think you are unreasonable, but they don’t know much about metabolism. That level of alcohol - especially as you are talking about a relatively low alcohol drink that metabolises relatively quickly, is just fine. By the time it gets through to your baby in your milk it will be negligible. Relax. You’ll both be fine.

TheKeatingFive · 27/08/2022 20:57

Absolutely fine, enjoy 🥂

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/08/2022 20:58

Totally fine, enjoy!

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 27/08/2022 20:59

Of course you can!

ColeensBoot · 27/08/2022 21:01

Yes you can drink alcohol while breastfeeding. If you can drive under the limit you can breastfeed.

And it's best to drink while actually feeding - then your body has the maximum time to metabolise the alcohol til the next feed.

Libelula21 · 27/08/2022 21:09

It’s my understanding that drinking when bf is completely different to drinking when pregnant. I’d do it.

Kongzilla · 27/08/2022 21:18

I think half of these posts are just based on opinion - there's good evidence-based guidance on drinking and breastfeeding on La Leche League which is great resource anyway for all things breastfeeding.

Ideally you would be best waiting at least until after LO is 8 weeks old as newborns have much more difficulty metabolising alcohol than older infants, but at that point drinking in moderation as you describe is ok - you should feed immediately before drinking, then drink (ideally with food/snacks and a non alcoholic drink on the side to dilute the effect), and then wait a couple of hours before feeding again: https://www.llli.org/breastfeeding-info/alcohol/

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 27/08/2022 21:21

I used to time it while I was feeding and sit and quaff a nice glass or two with some snacks watching something good on tv. You deserve it and happy mum equals happy baby. Chin chin! 🥂

ColeensBoot · 27/08/2022 21:24

My advice is from le leche league.

findingsomeone · 27/08/2022 22:21

I think the only thing to be mindful of with alcohol is if you co sleep, as it can make you sleep deeper and be less aware. But from a bf angle and not bf as part of cosleep it's not an issue I don't think.

Loics · 27/08/2022 22:34

Go ahead! Just don't co-sleep. 😊 I have had a few drinks while breastfeeding, just fed baby if they wanted and put them back into their cot when finished. Youngest does usually co-sleep but we follow guidance and put him in his own cot if at least one of us has had alcohol to the point of being tipsy.

Forgive my ignorance but of someone was pulled over for instance and failed the road side breath test for drink driving, they would then have to provide a further "evidence " test either via breath at the station or via blood/urine. If a test can be done via blood, wouldn't that mean the alcohol would be shown up via the bloodstream? So if breastmilk is made in the blood, 16 x the limit would be awful.for an infant drinking from such milk made via the blood?

Yes, 16x the limit would be awful, but you'd be in a coma and definitely (hopefully!) nowhere near a baby.

My point was that the alcohol level in breastmilk closely resembles the alcohol level in your blood.

The drink-drive blood alcohol limit is 0.08% - That's enough to impair your driving, but no where near enough that if someone drank your actual blood it would get them pissed.

Example - If your baby drinks 100 ml of breast milk while you have a blood alcohol level of 0.05 percent, your baby will consume 50 mg of alcohol. For a 5 kg baby, this is 0.001 percent of their body weight in alcohol.

I wouldn't test this to the limit of course! I'm not suggesting anyone drink 10x the drink-drive limit under any circumstances, let alone when they're planning to breastfeed. My point is that I wouldn't worry one iota about having a large glass of wine or that being a little "over the limit" will have an effect on breastmilk.

Mossstitch · 27/08/2022 23:49

I tried it a couple of times in the very dim and distant past, not worried about the alcohol but be warned the grapes made for windy baby with upset tummy and nasty nappies so didn't try it again🤷

Mammyloveswine · 27/08/2022 23:50

Absolutely and enjoy!

Mizztikle · 28/08/2022 00:20

As far as I've read as long as you leave it 2 hours its fine.

TheKeatingFive · 28/08/2022 02:36

*As far as I've read as long as you leave it 2 hours its fine.

all of that is thoroughly debunked

CatSeany · 28/08/2022 03:43

It's fine... do it a few times a week if you want to. The amount a baby gets from breast milk is so incredibly minimal, it really isn't worth worrying about if you're planning on being sensible.

That's bollocks no need to wait two hours :)
