I was in the airport (had so much time before my flight) and I looked at the perfumes/sunglasses/makeup - genuinely intending to buy at least a couple of Estée Lauder makeup pieces.

I unfortunately bought new jeans online and they were ill fitting, my hair was in a messy bun and I’m a bit overweight. Not one person approached me despite their being numerous sales assistants:

I been into a small department store that sells higher end items and twice I’ve noticed others being asked if they’d like help and I get ignored.

Aibu to think if I looked more groomed and slimmer then I’d actually be approached.

You're right. The older, fatter and uglier I have become the more invisible I have felt.

I agree op.

Tragically for the sales assistants it's the uncrowned
Older women who more often have money to spend.

Big mistake. Big big big mistake Flowers. It's the same with me.

Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now.

Thank you being kind. Don’t worry though, it didn’t upset me. It did make me not buy anything though.

If they don't approach you, then you don't look like a shoplifter, which is a bonus😉

I wonder if shoplifters might dress up a bit... I'm happy to stick with shabby chic... Not getting harassed by shop assistants or store detectives is a bonus!

felulageller · 27/08/2022 20:48

Just be like Julia Roberts!

It's so a thing.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 27/08/2022 20:49

I worked in a shop for 5 years, we were never taught to look for a certain profile of person but to be attentive to everyone. So to me I would say they were just being lazy rather than how you looked.

RoseyLentil · 27/08/2022 20:59

Sounds like they were just being lazy and nothing to do with how you looked.
I bought perfume and makeup at Belfast International for myself and several work colleagues- they gave me a list😆
I was wearing my work gear at the time - hiviz clothing and work boots and they treated me just the same as their more glamorous customers.

DiscoBadgers · 27/08/2022 21:01

They don’t tend to approach you as much at the airport as in department stores I find.

Augend23 · 27/08/2022 21:05

I don't think I've ever bought something or not bought something on the basis of whether or not someone asks if I need help. If I want to buy something I either take it off the shelf and to the till or ask an assistant. They rarely ask if they can help at the right time anyway - how would they know exactly when you have decided what you're buying?

But without being rude it isn’t about you or what you do or don’t do.

It’s an observation I made. It’s not even about whether or not I bought something.

See I’d disagree regarding the you need looks to be in a relationship. I know plenty of people that don’t fit the beauty standard that are in relationships.

That’s nice.

I know few, pretty great people, who never been in a relationship because their looks aren’t enough to make it.
One has never even been on one single date.
So it does happen.

Augend23 · 27/08/2022 21:24

No, obviously it's up to you whether or not you buy something!

I just can't imagine inconveniencing myself and creating additional cost for myself by adding VAT (usually removed at airports) because someone didn't approach me.

Everyone is perfectly entitled to do whatever they like though - including making

Augend23 · 27/08/2022 21:25

*Including making a decision that inconveniences them!

This is a fact of life, unfortunately.

Have you thought about a career change, MI5 or MI6 perhaps Wink

Thank you I think most of us understand the concept of duty free.

I’m not bothered about the cost of things either. A 20% price difference is irrelevant to me.

I think good looks are an asset to be appreciated and utilised where possible. Yes, first impressions do count. Body language and demeanour is part of that, though.

Starseeking · 27/08/2022 22:11

Decades ago when I was a make-up counter lady, I was privy to the way they treat customers Make-up counter assistants would stereotype those they think will spend a lot of money. And target them, as we were all in a day rate, plus commission.

The stereotype generally consisted of a white, slim woman who had full face of make-up, nails done, expensive handbag, and decently dressed. Anyone who fell outside of this, a lot couldn't be bothered with.

I spent all my time approaching absolutely everyone to help, as for me it was a good way to make the day pass more quickly, and I usually ended up with the highest commission, even though I am a rubbish sales woman!

I earn a lot of money, and am happy to spend a lot, but because I don't fit that stereotype, when I'm a customer the same thing happens to me today. I give myself 5 minutes of loitering at the counter, then if nobody approaches, I leave.

Thatswhyimacat · 27/08/2022 22:14

I actually once noted that I got way more attention from sales assistants in Space NK when I looked like crap - I assumed they saw an opportunity!

BirmaBrite · 27/08/2022 22:22

Body language and demeanour is part of that, though.

I actually think it is a lot more important than looks. I am older, below average looking, and fat. I have hit the sweet spot, nobody is threatened by me, nobody is jealous or envious, nobody notices me unless I choose to be noticed. I could actually be a very successful assassin Wink

CookPassBabtridge · 28/08/2022 00:11

I don't under the slim thing, why would being slim mean someone buys more? I could understand looking made-up etc.
