"We don't have the heating on"

Christonabike37 · 27/08/2022 16:04

Just reading another thread and seen this "we never have the heating on at night" and I've never really understood what it means, but now with energy prices I need to know if its really what people do.

Our thermostat is set at 15 always, in the evenings we up it to 20 for a few hours. I consider 15 off, and 20 on. Is this the same? Or do people just not have the heating on at all, like your house could be 0 degrees? How cold does it get at night? Surely it gets down to single figures most of the time?

Personally, I turn mine to -12 summer and winter alike, and I never get into bed without a bag of icecubes and a pillowcase stuffed with frozen peas. A good honest M&S singlet and high-waisted bloomers are enough to keep anyone warm at night. Anything more will give you the vapours

onlythreenow · 27/08/2022 21:10

Nevertheless, unless it's minus something Celsius outside over night there is absolutely NO need to have the heating on overnight.

It's winter where I am and it's often minus something Celsius outside overnight and most people don't heat their bedrooms. My bed is toasty warm, why would I need heating on?

uggmum · 27/08/2022 21:10

I completely switched my heating off on 1st April.
It will be off until winter.
Even in deepest winter I switch it off at night.
I use gas to heat my hot water and for cooking (hob). But I'm having solar installed so I will switch to using that to heat my water.

those who mention damp, have you tried a plug in humidifyer ?

I might look into this. The walls inside are freezing to the touch. The bathroom is an ice box despite having heating on 18 on constant. The outside walls are being repointed. Last year I went to hang a picture, drilled a hole, and later felt a draught.....cold air streaming in where I'd drilled. We have draughts everywhere, in effect the house is ventilated even with the windows shut. Confused But for some reason we have high moisture levels. No mould yet, but if I didn't heat the house, and didn't open windows I'm pretty sure we would have issues.

Snowiscold · 27/08/2022 21:11

Our heating is off-off at night, even in winter. In winter it is on for a couple of hours a day. Yes, that might mean single figures temperatures. It’s completely off in spring, summer and autumn, even in daytime.

Fcuk38 · 27/08/2022 21:12

I think I’ve only ever once had my heating on at night and that was one of those severe weather occasions when it was - silly numbers. Don’t you own blankets?

Brighteyedtriangle · 27/08/2022 21:14

Eh were in august does anyone really want the heating clicking on at all through the day. Even 15 isnt cold

BirmaBrite · 27/08/2022 21:15

@Squiblet exactly, and as for coats, what a ridiculous notion, who on earth thought anyone needed more than a t-shirt and a ruddy complexion to see them through the Winter month's ? Wink

User4668430 · 27/08/2022 21:16

I put my thermostat down to 7 in the summer, it's the lowest it will go, something to do with frost protection.

NettleTea · 27/08/2022 21:17

Ours is off until it starts to get a bit nippy for getting up, or of an evening. Then initially I will give it a boost in the morning for an hour to get up, then as needed in the evening. Thermostat set around 17-18, maybe creeping to 20 in the real cold.
Once it gets to winter we tend to have it come on about half an hour before we get up, then off again in day. On again when kids start heading home from school - so around 5pm, and that runs through til about 10 or 11pm. Turned off overnight. Weekends we may have it on a bit in the day.
I have to watch my daughter as she would have it thumping out at 30 all day if she could, and be walking round in a crop top and shorts. Shes been told its thick jumpers this year!

I have asthma and stuffy over heated nights makes mine worse

And?

We heat for a couple of hours around mid morning then again late afternoon/early evening with it off or on eco mode by about 8 ish.

Eco mode is about 12 degrees.

We heat at about 18/19. We do adjust and maybe 20 if it’s properly freezing. Don’t need heating on overnight as under duvets etc and partner seems hot blooded and boiling!

we do exactly the same.

Also turned off our bedroom radiator at the valve so bedroom is unheated and we almost always have the window open with the exception of one of the rare -7c snowy days perhaps.

Hot sleepers, need fresh air. There is no greater joy than a cool bedroom and a warm cosy duvet!

God, your house must be like the tropics.

I wish! It's draughty as f**k. The bedrooms at gable end feel it worse, always cold. I have thyroid issues so it's difficult to strike a balance 🤷

Satsumaonaplate · 27/08/2022 21:30

Our heating is only ever on for 2 hours a day even in winter. hovers around 13C in winter

lennonj · 27/08/2022 21:32

in the winter we’re have the hearing on for a couple of hours in the morning and then if everyone is out all day we have it on again from 4pm till about 10.30pm. Thermostat is set for around 19. I feel the cold and this is comfortable for me, even then I still use a wheatbag, put pjs and dressing gown on early and use a throw. I know our house is not unusual as all of my friends have warm houses in the evenings, I’ve been to houses that don’t and it’s so uncomfortable. Reading this thread reminds me off the huge salads and the chickens that last the week, it’s like competitive not feeling the cold! I’m hoping we’ll still be able to have the heating on in the evenings as I do really feel the cold but I do wrap up. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

KangarooKenny · 27/08/2022 21:32

Mine goes off at night.

BirmaBrite · 27/08/2022 21:32

@Sarahconnor1 you would hate my parents home, in the Winter they have a log burner going which heats their little cottage really well, too well for me, I can't be in the room it is in if the doors to the rest of the house aren't open, it gives out so much heat, add to that the heating on at 30 degrees and I spend as much time loitering outside the back door as possible. My Mum loves it hot, my Dad hates it hot, so they spend many a happy hour, playing thermostat wars, each one changing it when they go up to the loo, he switches it right down and she whacks it right back up again !

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 27/08/2022 21:44

Get an electric blanket. You only need to put it on for am hour or so each night. It has changed our lives.

I have the thermostat on at 10 degreed overnight so it only comes on if it had been snowing for a few days.

Ragged · 27/08/2022 21:53

electric blanket wouldn't keep my hands warm

SunnyD44 · 27/08/2022 21:53

In some ways reading this is quite encouraging, as there are people who clearly manage, and are comfortable, with very low levels of heating.

I truly think that the more you have your heating on, the more you get used to it and don’t feel the benefits from it.

I think many people who think they need the heating on a lot (especially overnight) will be surprised by how quickly their bodies get used to a lower temperature.

A thick dressing gown, fluffy socks and slippers are definitely your best friend.

I actually love the feeling of snuggling up with a blanket and hot chocolate in the cold evenings.

Sarahconnor1 · 27/08/2022 21:55

IvorCutler · 27/08/2022 21:18

And?

I was making the point that not everyone with asthma needs heating on 24/7 and that sometimes it can make asthma worse.

Feel free to scroll on by though 🙄

Yes, but you said you had no idea why anyone would have their heating on at night and I gave you a reason why one might. Avoiding an asthma attack is a pretty valid reason.

And I never said anything about having the heating on 24/7.

Sorry I can't get used to being cold overnight. I have had to out of necessity when heating broke down in winter. Couldn't sleep as I was so cold!
