To think of this as an investment in my health as well as cosmetic treatment?

Firstly please could people not be knobs, I know it's AIBU rather than Style and Beauty but this gets more traffic and I thought S & B may skew the results given the topic Smile

I don't want this to be insensitive as I know we are all (well most) tightening our belts and cutting back on unnecessary expenditure. A couple of years ago, looking at it as a hypothetical problem not actually affecting me, I would have thought my "dilemma" was the epitome of stupid and spoilt as well as a non brainer because patriarchal beauty standards Grinbut now I'm in this position I feel differently!

I have been getting lash extensions for about a year and really want to prioritise still getting them. It costs the equivalent of about a tenner a week. We are all warm and fed, I'm not taking "essentials" money but it could be used for "disposable income pleasures" like takeaways or going out for cake and coffee, for example.

Some years ago I was diagnosed with a disease which is very disabling, I can't work anymore and am in receipt of PIP. I also developed alopecia and lost a lot of hair including eyelashes. Some has grown back a bit now including some eyelashes and twatty grey long eyebrow hairs that appear overnight at about two inches long. When I got enough lashes back I had some lash extensions (checked it was safe to do and have small light ones not huge flapping ones) and can't believe what a difference they made in cheering me up as well as having beautiful fluttery eyes Grin Sometimes I go and look in the mirror for no reason other than to admire them Blush I'm actually amazed at myself as it's very unlike me, I could have gone days without even glancing in a mirror before all this.

DH and DC are encouraging me to keep it up as the essentials are covered and DH even said think of it as a "PIP funded expense" for my mental health Smile I know though that the lash money could be diverted elsewhere and it seems a bit vain and selfish sometimes, especially when DH is knackered working full time in a physical job as well as caring for me. And my PIP already goes towards extra costs like increased heating bills and equipment. I do sell some stuff on eBay though which all goes in the pot.

So would AIBU to keep getting the lashes?

(I've seen a few threads recently where people with disabilities/PIP have had really unkind twatty responses so I would be grateful if people could refrain from being like that here. I have still kept our direct debits to charity and to local food bank. I know I'm "fortunate" that we can afford heating and eating and lashes at the moment but my circumstances overall aren't fortunate really. Anyone saying "I wish I had your problems" is welcome to swap as I would swap all this for my "old life" in an instant. I have tried to keep it lighthearted deliberately as it's actually quite a shit situation for me and my family but I try and stay positive. So please play nicely MNers).

If it makes you feel better and gives you a lift then do it!!!!
Love the thought of you looking in the mirror and fluttering your luscious lashes .

Ffsjustltb · 27/08/2022 13:48

The other thing to think about is how desperately some of these small businesses will be needing to retain their customers. So not only are you giving yourself a little lift, you are helping them too xx

PearlyPink · 27/08/2022 14:39

Go for it! I have no intention to stop getting my lashes.

Squirrelsnut · 27/08/2022 14:47

I'll give up many things before my Rapidlash!
Go for it.

SisyphusDad · 27/08/2022 15:06

Sounds like money well spent.

felulageller · 27/08/2022 15:09

It says more about all the haters on here that they were mean on that other thread about the disabled woman.

In your circs it is entirely reasonable to use pip for lashes. No different from an NHS wig imo.

I'd rather my taxes went to that than to ppe cronies, HS2 etc.

DobbyHasASock · 27/08/2022 15:20

If you give them up youll only end up buying lots of different mascaras to try and replicate the look.

Can't wait to get mine done again. It makes a huge difference.

DamnUserName21 · 27/08/2022 15:24

YANBU.
Your mental health is crucial. Keep getting lashed.😀

FlutterMyLashes · 27/08/2022 15:29

You are all lovely! Thank you all for nice replies. It is also a very good point about small businesses not wanting to lose customers. I go to a small salon which is more expensive than others but they are very good and are very careful. @AldiLidlDeeDee also a good point, they are strict on patch tests etc and I think would tell me if they changed formulas but I will ask them about it to be sure, thank you. @chillipenguin I was going to say you shouldn't feel you have to wear cover up make up but then I realised how hypocritical I would sound! This is partly why I feel so conflicted I think, not just the money but (I'm a NCer, usually here mostly for the MN FWR section) I know it's also a bit hypocritical of me to feel I have to conform to expected beauty standards because patriarchy etc. I would never get fillers or Botox for this reason, and am proud of my DCs who don't feel they have to wear make up, bras etc. So my own sudden lash love is confusing to me! Confused

I've also lost a lot of weight, not intentionally but I was overweight before anyway so it's good. Seeing as I'm on a name change Grin nowadays I also like to look at my legs in the mirror when I am wearing short skirts Blush The other day (so now I sound boastful as well as vain!) DH said I get prettier as I get older. I think he is just a very kind man rather than it actually being true, but it made me feel happy Smile @felulageller funnily enough I have tried wigs and have lots of hair scarves etc but have now embraced the bald look (I do have some hair) and don't give a fuck Grin

@OnTheBrinkOfChange I'll see if I can put up a photo - I don't want to out myself so it may be an extreme close up I don't have many lashes in the very inside of my eye so we try and get a more cats eye look with a longer length at the edges.

You need to say to yourself that you are valid and entitled to act as you wish. If you receive any benefits you are still a full valid human being with a right to act as you wish or need. Refugee, benefit, low income or whatever… it doesn’t take away any of your autonomy or human needs. Just live in a way that makes you happy, and accept the consequences that arise as yours alone. You don’t owe any justification.
If anyone disagrees remember that their opinions are just that, opinion. To be ignored if you wish.

FlutterMyLashes · 27/08/2022 15:43

This is an extremely close up photo!

They are also able to actually shape the eyelashes I have into a curved shape and then I can just fill them in a bit. Which has also made a huge difference.

I think that thread was what prompted me to post actually. People were so hateful and there was a real tone of "well I don't pay MY taxes for people on benefits to have frivolous shit I can't afford myself" which was really depressing to read. DH still works as much as he can around my health and I paid a lot of tax when I was able to work! It's attitudes like that which encourage me (and lots of others I'm sure) to add what would be called "frivolous shit" to food bank donations especially around Christmas. I'm going to add childrens' advent calendars in good time for December.

Those are really nice I'm a wee bit jealous definitely keep getting them done as you've gotta keep your talented lash technician in business.

I wish I had a "before" photo to show as well! I didn't like having my photo taken before but now I don't mind, so that's also anoyher bonus, so I can join in my DCs selfies while they make bizarre V signs and then add cat ears to the photos...

I also used to hate Summer going as I used to hide my eyes behind sunglasses, but I don't mind now.

Use your PIP for whatever you want.

DinosaurDuvet · 27/08/2022 16:00

You definitely keep going OP :) I know I would!

I do my own lash 'extensions' (due to an eye condition I have, I can't justify having to get professional ones done and then have to remove them regularly for hospital apts etc). I use the likes of Kiss Falscara, Amor and Lovon lashes. They might be a cheaper alternative if you want to cut costs.

Personally, I also love doing my own, I find it therapeutic, but you might enjoy getting the service and relaxation, in which case definitely keep going.

Hakeandling · 27/08/2022 16:02

They look fab. Definitely keep going

honeylulu · 27/08/2022 16:08

They look really lovely! I've had lash extensions for holidays a couple of times which I loved but I do tend to fiddle with them too much and they fall out prematurely!

It's so easy as a mum to put yourself last and feel guilty for treating yourself but honestly if mum is happy then that's good for everyone. Your H and kids sound lovely too - so together you make a great team!

hattie43 · 27/08/2022 16:21

Everybody needs to find a way through this with a little treat , go ahead and enjoy your lashes x
