Price of second hand prams

I want a running buggy but I can't afford a new one and so have been looking on marketplace and Gumtree for one however I've been shocked to see how much people want for their second hand ones!

They retail at £300ish so in my mind I would want to pay £150 or a bit less for a second hand one however most of them are asking £180-£220!

If I paid £220 for someone's buggy that would have meant they only paid £80 for it and got to use it for however many years new!

However I know money is tight at the minute and that might be a factor... AIBU?

Supply and demand, I’m afraid. That’s the going rate.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 27/08/2022 07:29

We just had to give ours away on fb marketplace to get rid of it as we'd had it on sales sites for months and months with no one wanting it, even for £50. I actually just wanted someone to use it rather than landfill it so I hope it is being used.

Maybe try looking in different locations?

headstone · 27/08/2022 07:29

Make them a lower offer, I’m sure someone will not want to hold onto a big pram and will accept it.

BertieBotts · 27/08/2022 07:35

Keep looking. They do come up cheaper, as you say, why would you pay £220 for a second hand one when you could pay £80 more and get a guarantee etc. In fact for 25% off RRP you can often find them on offer for that kind of discount. (Unless you mean £300 is the typical "on offer" price, and the pram is actually 4-500 RRP)

Soubriquet · 27/08/2022 07:36

If you can see the date of when they were posted, look for one that’s been up for a month or two. Then make an offer. They probably will snatch your hand off

BertieBotts · 27/08/2022 07:38

that would have meant they only paid £80 for it and got to use it for however many years new!

I do think this is unreasonable though - what does it matter to you how much someone paid for something new? You can always sell it at the end of using it and make money back too.

You should be comparing the cost/benefits of new vs the cost/benefits of second hand to you, not worrying about whether it's fair what someone else paid.

Also, are you comparing like for like? e.g. cheap brands new vs better brands second hand?

HobnobsChoice · 27/08/2022 07:38

I'd make an offer too, I gave away our buggies/prams in the end as I just was fed up of them taking up space.

I think people often over estimate the value of a used buggy especially if it's a popular make. Perhaps the second hand market is more buoyant for certain specific types but when I bought pram/buggy for my kids I often saw people selling saying "was £500/800/1000" new and pricing it at about 25% off the new price. But theirs was a discontinued 7 year old model that they'd used for 3 years so that wasn't an especially good discount

pandarific · 27/08/2022 07:53

join a few local fb groups for parents. Often people post buggies for sale much cheaper than on selling sites per se, and also a lot of people put up ‘does anyone have an x, looking for one’ posts which have a good response. More of a community thing rather than just a selling thing iykwim.

StridTheKiller · 27/08/2022 07:57

Apparently Out n Abouts go for daft money 2nd hand. I sold mine to a lady who couldn't afford this, for £40.
You might be lucky!

Snowiscold · 27/08/2022 08:01

If I paid £220 for someone's buggy that would have meant they only paid £80 for it and got to use it for however many years new!

That is not really logical. It doesn’t affect you how much someone paid for it. They wanted a new one and paid for it and used it for as long as they wanted. By that logic, you could also do the same and therefore only pay £80 for it.

chillipenguin · 27/08/2022 08:02

Yeah some people don't realise the moment it's been puked on its basically lost about half its value.

VoiceaFromUranus · 27/08/2022 08:39

They may be asking £££ but they're not getting £££.

We had an immaculate travel system and in the end donated it because people would rather spend £££ on new.

Mumspair1 · 27/08/2022 08:45

Around me, people are giving really great and expensive items away for free. Maybe depends on the area? I think yanbu, I wouldn't pay for something that I can get new for a marginal diff in price.

Thisismyusername1 · 27/08/2022 08:45

If you know which brand you want join the fb resale page, they are usually more reasonable. Or car boot sales, I was selling at one last weekend and there were several people with full decent travel systems and they couldn't give them away!

Caspianberg · 27/08/2022 08:50

Tbf fair, you can by it for £200 and sell again for £150 making it only £50 cost to you also. If things are kept in good condition why shouldn’t it hold value

where I live, most things hold value. Cars, bikes, prams etc all often are several years old, yet sale for only 5-10% less than new. People still buy. They save a little and it’s better environmentally

Many jogger buggy’s are also peoples second pram, not used daily. So they often can be as new

holidaynightmare · 27/08/2022 08:52

My mamas and papas pram travel system set with isofix base, car seat, Carey cot, rain cover, push hair bit, frame and 2 liners was in a bundle for about £500 this was 7 years ago

Sold it earlier this year I put it up being cheeky for £250 and got £250 but I kept it really nice

A lot depends on the condition of it really
