Staycation

I get so wound up when I see following posts on social… “we had an amazing staycation at centre parks/butlins/air bnb city break”…
These are not staycations, they are holidays!

‘Staycation’ used to be a term used for staying in your own home during annual leave and going on days out etc. I feel that using staycation to refer to U.K. holidays really devalues affordable, local HOLIDAYS!

Meh a staycation to me is in the UK

AuntieStella · 26/08/2022 22:44

I agree with you

There used to be:

  • holidays abroad
  • UK holidays
  • staycation
  • individual days out

Now the distinction has been somewhat eroded, which makes the language less clear. I think that's retrograde

ohidoliketobe · 26/08/2022 22:45

You're correct.
(Uk) holiday
Staycation is exploring your local area/ day trips but still sleeping at your house.

BarryBantam · 26/08/2022 22:48

Yanbu. That is what the word means. I think people started misusing when they wanted to share holiday photos with their FB friends but still pretend that they weren't travelling out of their local area during covid.

I always thought of a staycation as a holiday in your home country but I absolutely hate the term regardless of it meaning. So annoying!

cadburyegg · 26/08/2022 22:49

I agree! We holiday in the UK every year. It's not a staycation ffs

Octomore · 26/08/2022 22:49

A holiday in the UK is a holiday.

A holiday spent at home is a staycation.

It bothered me for 2 years now
