Energy usage (sorry!)

Aidbu for getting to this point without really looking into this… and for creating another thread 😬
I have buried my head in the sand, convinced myself it was all exaggerated but I’ve just begun looking into my usage.

My Mum is on a pay as you go meter and we compared our prices and her price per unit is cheaper than mine. I pay quarterly (but make payments monthly)

Ive looked at my usage but with no point of comparison I don’t know if it’s a lot and whether to expect the massive prices I’m reading about. Or if I’m below average so will pay less. I know it varies greatly.

my rough gas usage annually is 10,000
and electric 3000. Those are rounded up figures. I can cut back on the gas.

Can anyone post their usage for me to compare? Thank you

What?

Seriously. How big Is your house? How many people?

If you can cut back, why aren’t you?

And more importantly, who are you writing this article for?

WhereDidYouGoBernedette · 26/08/2022 22:07

I can't even get into my account at the moment due to an erroneous switch over;

Your annual gas bills are already £10k?? How come?

Scaredypup · 26/08/2022 22:16

Sorry that’s KWh not £££ 😩 Told you I was t very good with this

OP posts:
stairgates · 26/08/2022 22:19

We are 6000 kwh for elec and 16500 for gas, we are above average

MorganSeventh · 26/08/2022 22:23

I think you'd probably get better information googling for average domestic annual electricity and gas usage than asking for anecdotal information on mumsnet. The picture below was the first hit I got when I searched and seems pretty to the point. Other suppliers might give slightly different figures,

Energy usage (sorry!)
PermanentTemporary · 26/08/2022 22:27

Well... looking back at my meter readings, between the December and January readings I used 80 units (i think KwH though they don't make it easy). Gas was about 8p a KwH and 30p a day standing charge. Electricity 160 units - 40p a unit, 40p a day standing charge.

My direct debit is £100 a month and has been for a long time. I'm about £400 in credit which I hope will cushion me for a month...

BMW6 · 26/08/2022 22:27

Our useage 2021 was Gas 10540 and Electric 1840. Two people, 2 bed terrace.
Apparently both slightly less than average, but definitely room to cut back (tumble dryer, oven cooking, thermostat)

It won't be comfortable but it is doable

Dissimilitude · 26/08/2022 22:28

Your usage is below average.

Average is around 12000 kWh for gas, 4000 kWh for electricity (I think, someone can correct if I’m wrong). This will be for something like an average family in a 3 bed semi.

Usage will vary with size and energy efficiency of the house, number of people in the house etc. I’m closer to 16000 kWh gas, 5300 kWh for electric, for example.

The typical household Ofgem uses to calculate the price cap and who will pay the £3549 figure per year from October you're seeing today use 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per year so you are slightly under for gas and very slightly over for electricity so you should probably pay a little less than this figure.

Quincythequince · 26/08/2022 22:30

Your usage is below average-

You have no idea of knowing this based on the information given.

Does she live in a 6 bed detached? A studio flat?

PermanentTemporary · 26/08/2022 22:32

How embarrassing! Units are not KwH.

It doesn't matter where she lives, she gave her usage per year in kWh.

Scaredypup · 26/08/2022 22:33

Thank you, helpful replies.
I still don’t quite believe prices will be as high as they’re saying but I suppose it’s time to start planning.

There's no law requiring an average to be for a particular property type or size.

Getoff · 26/08/2022 22:36

Of course not.

But other people posting their usage for their houses which may be a six bed detached or a one bed flat are without context by way of response.

How will you know if it’s a fair comparison if you don’t know what you’re comparing it to?

Quincythequince · 26/08/2022 22:40

hamsterchump · 26/08/2022 22:33

It doesn't matter where she lives, she gave her usage per year in kWh.

But it matters if it’s for one person or six.

If she’s heating six rooms or two.

I don’t get this post?

Why not ask what percentage of salary too?

Its as relevant.

LetsGoNorth · 26/08/2022 22:48

Electric annual usage 5,720 KWH
Gas annual usage 18,222 KWH

That's ours for the past 12 months. Large 3 bed detached, 5 people.

Bubblebubblebah · 26/08/2022 23:05

2 people 3 bed house
Leccy about 1850
Gas 8500

Yabado · 26/08/2022 23:16

I’m on pre pay with EDF electric
My unit rates
Electricity day unit rate: 34.83p per kWh
Electricity night unit rate: 14.96p per kWh

Daily standing charge: 56.62p per day

no debt on the meter

last year I i used around 2700 Kw for the year
cost me around £22 a week inc £4 standing charge

3 adults / large 2 bed / 2 bath house
rarely use the dryer / cooker
Someone is always at home

use a George Foreman grill omelet maker and air fryer
use washing machine every other day generally but if I need to use it more I will
don’t

Gas 7600
cost roughly £400 Last year inc £4 a week standing charge

that’s with the heating on Oct March 3-4 showers - min a day sometimes more .

according to Martin Lewis’s calculator if I use the same my bill will go to around £1700 for electric

last year I used around 1k inc SC
so for electric an increase of around £15 a week
rough figures

Scaredypup · 27/08/2022 00:05

@Quincythequince I don’t think it matters the size of the property or occupants. The predicted price rises are based on averages.
i just wanted a rough idea of what other peoples usage is compared to mine.

But if other people’s use is for six people, four teens (all boys who all game), two parent s who work from home - is it comparable. What does it tell you, that is useful to you personally.

Not all information is useful unless it has enough detail.

I could tell you my DD per month, so what? You know nothing about what those charges relate to.

loudbatperson · 27/08/2022 00:10

On most tarries paying on receipt of the bill (quarterly or monthly) is the most costly way to pay. Followed by pre payment and the cheapest being direct debit.

I would suggest switching over to direct debit to help offset some of the increase in cost.

Yes an average.

An average house with average rooms, average people?

What does the MSM term average even mean?

I use circa 500 units per month right now of gas. How does that help you unless you know what I’m powering and for how many people?

Its like asking ‘ how much do you spend on petrol weekly’
